    Speaking as someone who works in college IT, I've heard from more than one colleague that the same faculty clamoring for wireless and technology in every classroom are the ones now clamoring for killswitches so that the students can't use it during their classes.

    Awesome.

    It's sort of like when we put projectors with laptop hookups in all of the classrooms in nice, integrated bunkers and then they decided that the laptops were too heavy to carry, and they wanted desktops permanently installed in there are well. Whee! I'll never understand why a professor can carry three different NPR tote bags chock full of paper, and the four pound iBook they've been issued is the breaking point.

    Because Mac OS 9 sucks, and OS X runs like ass on a six year old Powerbook, or my equally ancient G3/400 B&W.

    I don't like Tru64 or WinNT 4.0 on my Alpha.

    Windows is a poor fit for my Athlon-based PVR box.

    But Debian kicks ass on all three. And gives me that same environment no matter what hardware is sitting underneath.

    As an example, my university has regular used computer sales. For the prices they are offering their compters I could buy a brand new computer with an LCD monitor.

    The college probably doesn't want people actually buying the stuff. I work for the IT department at a college, and the one time that we sold off old gear we were getting support requests on it for YEARS. And this stuff was end-of-life crap when we sold it.

    It's easier to just set the prices ridiculously high, and then send the gear to the scrapyard when nobody buys it.

    I have a dedicated Nessus scanning station at work, running on Debian/PPC on a G4 Cube.

    Why do I have an odd feeling that this platform isn't going to be supported any more. Hell, I suppose I'll count myself lucky if there's anything but RPMs for installation, let along "oddball" architectures like mine.

    I guess everything good comes to an end. Figures that this would happen right after I talk the boss into ponying up the cash for a plugin subscription. Pffft.

    However, my *biggest* beef with OS X (this is an unrelated plea for help from anyone who knows) is that I cannot find a way to set up remote "raw" printers on OS X.

    Hold down "Option" when you click the Add Printers button to get an Advanced screen that will allow you to do this.

    I swear, OS X must have a 30 life code hidden in it somewhere.

    The question, for me anyway, would be whether or not this will allow users to use a different interface than the Microsoft-standard one.

    The main reason I don't use Windows is that the GUI for it is incredibly annoying and unintuitive to me. If I could run something like Windowmaker on top of the Vista kernel, that would get me to buy my first Windows machine in years.

    (Not that anyone gives a shit what I think, but hell, I just woke up and I'm feeling chatty.)

    Why is it that naive, idealistic comments get modded up, but harsh realistic comments get modded down?

    Because most people who view themselves as harsh and realistic are actually just being rude and irksome.

    I can't remember where I read it, but I saw something once about how young people tend to think that a certain weary cynicism is a sign of sophistication, while in reality, it's often the exact opposite.

    And the real closer on this is Windows Media Center is bound to have a higher overall WAF (Wife Approval Factor), luckily the other half is a geek so this wasn't an issue for me.

    1) Put the computer inside of the entertainment center, where the wife can't see the case or hear the fans.

    2) Buy an ATI Remote Wonder. Program an appropriate xmodmap for Myth. I can send you mine, if you like.

    3) Run the cord for the ATI receiver up the back of the unit and put it near the TV.

    WAF. Solved.

    Well, it worked for me, anyway.

    What advice do those of you in the IT field have for this issue?

    Is he a good manager?

    Does he handle budgets well? Planning? Meetings? Does he keep the rest of the company off of your back?

    The reason I ask is that I've found there is a pretty inverted relationship between technical expertise and managerial prowess. The worst boss I ever had was a field tech for DEC who specialized in component-by-component hardware repair. He was a technical wizard, but a lousy manager.

    It's certainly possible that this guy is just the opposite.
