One of the things that I miss is how such a robot would move around. Mines usually aren't all hidden in easy accesible places on a road, so how does this droid come to the mines? Let's hope that the test version did not count on human beings carrying it. I can already imagine 10 people lifting this piece of iron, lugging it towards the mines when suddenly one of them hears a click under his foot.
"Sorry Jim, but we're going to defuse the bomb through your foot. This will only hurt a bit."
Making a copy of a program or CD without charging for them should not be compared to the lending of book, it should be compared to the copying of all pages of that book. This is something which usually is prohibited, copyright and such, so why should the digital equivalent be any different?
Lazy bum! if you want real news for nerds, find interesting bit that you think are worthwhile and submit em here, instead of just whining. I get sick and tired of people who complain about news here but who do not contribute themselves. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Kudos to all who do post news here.
I already noticed this like 10 years ago after noticing the increase in cannabalism due to mrs. pacman.

when you look at debating, you can already see trolling in real life. People do not argue to defend the positions they agree with, they argue for the sake of argument, and often use troll-like statements to lure other people into discussions etc. You're just lucky that a sense of social awareness prohibits the debaters to emulate goatse like poses:-)
The most scary thing about reading such articles is that I always have a feeling that it will end up being fiction, having a happy ending, yet finding out that these things really happen, even in civilised countries.
Basically, the escape velocity being greater or equal to lightspeed is a consequence of why you can't get out, not a cause.
Eeeh, incorrect. The reason why you can't get out is because the gravitational force is pulling you in too hard. The escape velocity is a number which can be calculated given the mass of the object you are trying to escape, which is quite heavy in case of a black hole. So the escape velocity isn't the cause why you can't get out, but it is directly linked to the thing which is the cause: gravity.
My pet theory: RSI & CT seem to be caused by overuse of underpowered muscles.
I can agree with your pet theory out of personal experiences. One other tip to train underpowered muscles, especially those arm, finger, neck and back muscles, and have fun while doing it: start climbing. Indoor or outdoor don't matter, it's easy to start and it does wonders for your back, belly arms and neck!
I don't consider the definition as stated by dictionary great because it lacks an essential part of the concept of irony. The fact that princeton uses the same definition does not change that (and this does not say anything about princeton since I am sure that they did not write that definition themselves).
It only makes sense to add NSYNC to this movie. It's called "Attack of the Clones", and we all know that boy bands are cloned of each other, so why not?
but I think the definintion people need to understand is "Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs", which is actually what is happening, isn't it?
That is indeed one of the definitions of dictionary.com, but it isn't a great one since it lacks a part about the incongruity containing a somewhat "humorous/sad" taste which is present in a real ironic case (pardon me for not being able to eloquently explain it, english isn't my native language). For example, if you tell a funny joke and in reaction I punch you in the face, that that is an incongruity between what might be expected and what actually happens but isn't irony.
As the article states: . It's a real achievement, in fact XP could be the first Microsoft operating system that people don't talk about, simply because the user doesn't have to worry about it - it's like a TV, you turn it on and it works. All the time.
To most users, this is how an os should be. A necessary thing which does what is does when it should do it wihtout the user having to wonder how or why.
If you are the type who screws open the vacuum cleaner to find out how it works, then you are likely to install linux and have fun fiddling with it. The hours spend are hobby and learning time. The fact that all the software to play with is free is a nice add-on.
If you are the type who couldn't care less how stuff works, but just wants it to work to play games, to make a presentation or whatever turns you on, then every minute spend learning stuff and fiddling with an os to get things to work feels like eternity. The fact that all the software is free only confirms your feeling that there *has* to be a reason why it is free.
So it isn't that free software is a hard sell, it is hard to sell because a lot of people do not see their time as being free too.
What crap is this? Freedom of speech is a notion introduced to protect the single person standing on a crate claiming that the government sucks. It is not a "get out of jail for free" card that will allow you to say everything. It certainly does not have anything to do with moral arguments as to whether it is "right" or "good" to be able to kill a prostitute in a video game.
No, what you are referring to is something called the twin paradox, but it is not a paradox since the cases aren't exactly the same. Why? If you move at high speed away from earth and return, then at a certain point in time, energy had to be used to make you change your velocity and head back to earth. Either you used the brakes, turned and accelerated again, or a giant with a large bat gave you a smack, but whatever way you look at it: work is done to make the change happen. This is not the case with the earth. So the earth might appear to move away at near light speeds, but time will not pass slower on earth with respect to your frame:)
Such technology already is in use to harvest tomatoes. A robot arm can slightly squeeze them and determine the ripeness of a tomato based on the firmness of the tomato. If not ripe, then the tomato is left alone to get some more sun. It's systems like this which can be used to automate farms.
Actually, the methods they use to check the primes is not related to float arithmic. They use fast fourier transforms to speed-up the squaring required in the LL algorithm, with additional bonus that this FFT automatically performs the mod calculation.
What one general idea behind prime checking is that there are several theorem's that you can use to show that a number is (probably) prime without checking all factors or using Erastostenes sieve. A few are given in faq: Q3.3. I believe one of those theorem's is Fermat's little theorem. These are not used in this program. Instead they use the LL test, based upon "For odd p, the Mersenne number 2^p-1 is prime if and only if 2^p-1 divides S(p-1) where S(n+1) = S(n)^2-2, and S(1)=4". The Fast Fourier transforms are used to calculate the S(n) with the modulo 2^p-1 part as a bonus.
All this time I thought the slashdot effect was like the sword of Damocles, you never know when it might hit your site. This article shows that some sites can live their lives in oblivion...Anyone looking for the red and blue pill for his site, there you have it.
This seems like a good idea - it would allow many people who don't wish to be subjected to violence/nudity/language a chance to watch any movie they want without waiting months for it to be released on network television, already PG-13ized.
Imagina using this option on the south park movie. You'd be watching a black screen for 90 minutes:)
Shouldn't have loaded that watch with republican credits, they're not worth anything in this universe.

I read em because of the dialogs between Luke and Han. Oh, HP you said....

Lol, could be, I am drop dead tired :)
A smart person like would surely recognize what I had been smoking if I spell it like cannab(is)alism....

So what you are proposing basically is virus-security through obscurity of exex bits? Where have I heared similar things....

Rule-wise even more easy yet at least as challenging: Othello/Reversi. Also available in palm form! For an introduction: the dutch othello site.

In other words: science discovers goatse.cx
