Is Linux/MacOS really more secure then windows, is their just no one around to throw crap on it?
By default no, Linux's kernel is pretty secure, but there are still constant holes being found in the various services that people often install such as sendmail. A few years ago in Linux's infancy I setup a default RedHat box, and left it connected to a 56K modem overnight. It was hacked before morning. Of course this was like 10 years ago.. In other news, security sucked 10 years ago:)
What I'm more concerned about is other countries not getting access to these new technologies, and being stuck scraping enough to get by, or needing to fight with others over it. As you said, wars are waged over competition for resources.
Seems like there will always be the third world, but thankfully the countries that are escaping it (india for example) not only are showing their resourcefulness in competing in our modern market, but thanks to a global market, should be able to afford those new technologies once they become affordable after the first world pays the early adopter cost.
Well bitwise copying can actually be successfully detected because a copy will have random errors that are CRC corrected different that the pressed original. Of course if you can press your copies you are a extreme mass pirate and there is no hope.:)
True, home computers run too fast for the average persons need but you can't add up those peoples computer speeds and say a server needs to by X times faster to compete, because you have the added advantage of time-share, ie not all people are taxing their computers at all times. There are some speed advantages for this system though. 1. Searching through your documents
Even if its a complicated non indexed search as a small amount of users would be searching at any one time you can obtain a disproportionate amount of CPU/disk time which could theoretically provide you with more processing speeds than on a desktop. 2. Image processing (or other data processing).
Think about the very high end system that people buy to run filters and whatnot on highend images. Of course you would probably have to buy CPU cycles for something like this, depending upon your frequency of use it could still be cheaper and faster than buying your own high end system.
As long as the screen output doesn't need highspeed (games) you really could take advantage of a well built networkOS, especially if your just running off a PDA.
Like these drives I found when I purchase multiple drives from the same vendor they will often die around the same time. I've once had two drives that lasted 5 years one died then a second died the next day before the raid array could finish rebuilding itself. Talk about a bad day.
Have your religious ceremony if you want. Strangly enough marriage in the legal sense is tied it a bunch of rules, one of which requires insurance companies, taxes, and a host of other services to treat it as a special case with special legal rights. I think a lot of the issue is bankrolles by insurance companies and whatnot, though some insurance companies do offer these partnerships services as well. Demanding that these partnerships recieve all the benifits, many of which are designed to encourage procreation is a whole nother ballpark.
I love how supposedly-intelligent people can't realize that at some level, at some point in time, members of a civilized society must have some acceptance of a system of laws and order, instead of just arbitrarily and indiscriminately breaking ones they personally disagree with, if there is to be any value to a legal system at all.
Ok so if there is a law I disagree with I should encourage its change but not break it until its been changed. Hate to break it to you but thats just what me and many others are doing, I havn't illigally copied a piece of music sence the original napster (at that time the legality was undecided, and parts of it are still now). But you seem to think that if I simply post on a message board the positive effects on free copying (and your right, piracy is probably wrong to advocate, as it advocates breaking the law) that I'm some type of low life that has no respect for property and can not make a rational argument.
I don't know about the fresh blood, but most demonic beady eyed people are just morons, from my personal experience, and not actually bad people. Either way, someone who looks dangerous doesn't get away with many crimes, so if they look dangerous and act that way too, they are probably already behind bars.
One a side note, why the heck do VCRs need to be manually switched between cable and antenna?
Never seen that on any VCR I've ever owned, they all have a VCR/TV switch or button that switches between the VCR acting as the tuner and sending output on channel 3 or 4 or having all channels simply pass through unchanged.
To add to the off beat conversionation: I'm 27 and arrived a bit late on the BBS sence, made my own one day with quick BBS (actually spend several weeks on the artwork and whatnot) only to have my father cut the extra phone line cause I was spending too much time on the computer:(.
Ok tell me the truth, did you play GTA when it first came out or AFTER GTA3 made the series popular. Obviously going backwards is an experience in low tech, but the original GTA was amazing for its day and time. Give credit where credits due.
Nope, because I'm not a programmer, more of a network/database consultant. Either way people who are good at logic and math will always be in demand (of course I can always learn a new trade, spent many years working as a locksmith with my dad, hey if I can't earn money atleast I can steal it:)
Like program? In total jobs I'd say the majority of programming is in customized inhouse apps, which will never go away. Atleast untill the computer can program itself. Computer... I'd like a database application that tells me my profits for the end of year BEFORE the year even starts. I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that, I must kill you now.
Luckily in a true autonoumous system the speed limit would be higher and red lights would either be timed better or there would be no red lights at all (smart cars can be programmed to match speeds so that they glide through an intersection without hitting eachother smoothly this is extremly scary but safe)
Umm you've obviously never had kids. The answer to your question is an obvious, NO.
But seriously the original poster was saying they need to have better driving abilities than a 16 year old. Though having a world of 17 year old virtual drivers scares me as well.
Two things 1. 0.8 isn't really all that drunk. 2. Did they instruct the people to continously talk. In real life I pause my conversations when approaching situations where I don't have complete 100% visual information. Also (ok 3 things) remember this was a driving "simulation" the brain doens't place the level of importance on simulated driving as it does the real thing. You crash much more frequently in a simulator no matter how accurate than you do in real life.
So what, I can pick your front locks in a matter of seconds do I do it? No. If your front door is left wide open will I walk in? Maybe probably not. Point is in polite society we lock doors that we don't want people to casually go through. If you presist and go through them anyways you are a criminal. Otherwise you can get by with the "I didn't know any better" defense. Lock door are a sign that you don't want intruders not the ultimate defense against intruders, same as WEP. (Or course you can go with WPA2 with certificates which is pretty damn close to Fort Knox as well.

(Hmm, I still need to rip on the 360...) The Xbox? more like... stupidbox.
Sorry, the proper insult is.. Xbox 306? Its 360 a full circle, so they just went around to where they started?
-1 spellcheck :(

Umm Word has been doing this for year.

the way the internet works is that its like a load of tubes (not trucks)
You owe me a new keyboard, preferbably wireless with an LCD, did phantom ever come out with the full lcd keyboard?
Except I read it as Pancreas the first few times over.
Drilling doesn't hit any nerves.
WTF? You put something thats hard and vibrates on your teeth and tell me it doesn't hurt.

Chauffeur is french for "to heat"
In the first times of railroads, the driver had to keep the engine hot, hence the name.
The fact that this Brigand was called Chauffeur as well is coincidental.

Whats funny is SCO is up about 3 cents from this news so far. HU..
