The most amazing part of this post to me is that VW is still "working on... vehicles that aren't CO2 neutral." I think you are right... we could post the salary range but never thought about it. I will bring it up with HR. The problem is that we only pay in the medium range but make up for it with a shorter work week, telecommuting, and good benefits. So the salary isn't going to blow anyone's socks off but emphasizing the other benefits may help.

  5. Re: What am I doing wrong? on The Great IT Hiring He-Said / She-Said · · Score: 1

Like a majority of the job postings we don't list the salary range. We only get to that part after the interview process which is why I know salary isn't the reason we are not receiving candidates. Our retention has also been very high so employees are satisfied with the overall benefits package. If we had candidates receive an offer and then refuse it, that would indicate a salary issue.

I'm a "former" developer and current IT hiring manager. I am trying to fill a couple of developer positions. I worked with HR to craft the job description that best described the job opening... Without any crazy years of experience requirements. It is a senior level position though. At any rate, we have received only two qualified candidates in two months. And we have received only four or five resumes so it's not as if we have been weeding out a ton of candidates before interviewing them. One received a promotion from their current employer before we could bring them back for a second interview, the other was asking for almost double what we could have offered plus wanted to telecommute from out of state half the week. We just are not seeing candidates. Where do developers go when they are looking for jobs? Job boards are expensive and we can't afford to hit every one of them.

Most of what has been said is true. In addition to pricing issues, I believe that the expansion sets were not very well laid out. After purchasing my initial kit in 1999, I waited for the expansions to come with the other cool sensors, but the kits that came really didn't offer much (especially at their $50 price point). To get the special sensors I was going to have to special order them individually at an outrageious price. I did purchase a few Technic kits to canabalize for parts for my robots though. The other issue I had with the kit, though this wouldn't have caused sales problems but would have been nice for the next generation of mindstorms, was that all my robots were built around the brick, motors and sensors. If the motors and sensors had been slighly less expensive and more readily available individually, I would have picked up more of them and if the main brick could have been smaller and seperated from the robot somehow (perhaps with a central wiring harness brick) then I could have built more robots without having to take one robot apart just to make another one. This would have help increase sales. I think that Lego should have embraced the other programming options for the Mindstorm.

Bottom line, smaller Mindstorm kits on store shelves for motors, sensors, gears, etc; Continued gradual improvements to keep the product line moving forward.

it doesn't do anything that you couldn't whip up in a month or so using PHP

Well, knock yourself out then! Better yet, let the other child care professionals do it. Oh, wait, they aren't programmers! So they would need to hire programmers to work on it for them. Assuming your guestament is correct, and it is not I assure you, you are looking at roughly $16,000 in initial development costs. This wouldn't cover bug fixes, additions, hardware, installation, or support.

Let us not over simplify such tasks. To do such a project would require some financial backing and a centralized agency to over see the development. There would also be lots of compromises to be made amongst the individual childcare departments. This adds much more overhead which equates to more money and time.

Sometimes in the end it is just easier and more efficient to go with a third party provider. It allows you to evaluate the market for what is available (what companies pay to have developed isn't always what they thought they were buying) and make your purchasing decisions inteligently.
