  1. The Bank on Ask Slashdot: Best On-Site Backup Plan? · · Score: 2

Safe deposit boxes aren't expensive and they're not a bad offsite location to store copies of you data on external hard drives. I don't really like using hard disks for long-term archiving but it's one of the lowest cost practical solutions. A tape drive would be something to look into but they're not cheap.

  2. Try Dvorak on Ergonomic Mechanical-Switch Keyboard? · · Score: 1

When I started getting wrist pain from typing I learned to type on the dvorak layout. Your problem is probably less with the keyboard itself and more with what you're doing on it.
I also use a Model-M IBM at work and don't really care how noisy it is.. they're the greatest keyboards ever produced.

  3. switchin on Back and Forth Between Qwerty and Dvorak? · · Score: 1

I used to have to switch back and forth frequently. It only took a second or two to get back into the qwerty mode or dvorak mode. I had the most trouble trying to type qwerty on my Model-M IBM keyboard.. because that's the touch I most associate with Dvorak.

It may be different for other people, but the keyboard touch itself helps me associate between qwerty and dvorak.

Now that I rarely use qwerty anymore, it's a little bit of a struggle to switch to it.

That is such a silly notion to think that research done at a university is somehow less valuable or not worthy or returning a profit. that's exactly where you are wrong. individual programmers CAN compete with Microsoft. Maybe you hadn't noticed, but software like MySQL is largely the result of the work of one person.. which competes, on a smaller scale, with software from Microsoft, IBM, and Oracle.

You don't believe capitalism. You don't realize that every cent earned by these giant corporations is done without the use of force. They are forced to persuade customers that they are selling quality products. The only monopolies that last in the long run are government enforced.

You seem to completely ignore the benefits to society that are gained by cost cutting that large scale corporations can do. That is one of the miracles of capitalism, as corporations grow and gain in efficiency, society benefits.. and other people are now freed up to specialize in their own fields, or even compete in the marketplace if they can innovate and outpace the current market leader.

I don't want to live anywhere where my success can be limited by government action. As long as I don't use force to gain my wealth, I should be free to do so. I don't see Bill Gates out there with a gun forcing people to buy windows.

Your solution on the other hand.. requires the use of force. If it's legal, or a gun, it really doesn't matter. It is still limiting freedom.

  21. Criminal Acts on Happy Independence Day, Jose · · Score: 1

I find this appalling that people are defending this guy. McDonalds does not grow as a corporation through force, they must persuade consumers to eat there. Bove on the other hand, did use force agaist McDonalds private property. Without respect for property rights, Bove is no safer to work as a small farmer than McDonalds is to act as a giant global corporation.

Through his actions Jose has limited not only McDonalds ability to profit from their new franchise, but all its workers cannot work. I'll be the first to admit these aren't the highest paying or most skillful jobs, but they give a lot of young people an opportunity to get started. Yet Jose denied them this opportunity (temporarily) through the use of force against McDonalds. That's simply wrong.

The fact is that farming is best done on a VERY large scale. Prices drop, and output grows significantly when the farmer is able to invest in new high tech equiptment. The small farm is no better deserving of government protection than any other business.

If consumers want to hold onto these small farms, they must be willing to pay a lot more. In fact, some people have decided to do just that. Throughout Phoenix at least, we have two major chains which specialize in organically grown foods and other "natural" foods and meats. Of course the prices reflect that.

You always vote with your dollars. Every penny you spend is a voluntary vote. I never advocated any use of force, quite the contrary.

Companies can only be held responsible for injuries to property or breaking laws. Polluting falls in that category. But even more compelling is my desire to live near where I work.. so I'd make sure it was a nice environment. I don't know anyone who feels different.

As for Bill Gates, that's his personal money. He is free to do with it whatever he wishes. It was earned by people voluntarily buying his sub-par software. But his $50billion cannot have the same positive impact to society than the software which earned it will.

  24. Re:[Clue] on How Socially Responsible Are Computer Companies? · · Score: 1

I'd certainly rather be underpaid than starving. The availability of jobs is critically important to the development of industry and society in developing countries. Child labor used to exist here in the United States. It didn't really go away because of legislation, it went away because parents began to make enough money to support their kids. If foreign countries are allowed to operate their labor markets freely, work conditions will certainly improve. But if you had it your way, children would just be thrown out in the street to starve. Is that socially responsible?

  25. [Clue] on How Socially Responsible Are Computer Companies? · · Score: 2

Here's your tip, it doesn't matter. Social Responsibility is complete bullshit. I want to buy from a company which spends their time researching and improving their products. If they can make better products, cheaper; the benefit to socitey is far greater than any possible charity could offer. It is completely backward to expect business to act so altruistically. If that were the predominent mentality, we'd still be in the dark ages. Capitalism and the profit motive has resulted in extraordinary advances in technology, especially in medical science. Acting socially responsible has nothing to do with those advances. The fact is that in general, we all live in the general vicinity of our workplace. There's no motive to live in a polluted environment. The most moral and ethical thing a person can do is work hard and get the most from your money.
