My server is in a hot attic and it's not dead yet. Heat that's hot to you isn't hot to the computer. It could be 130F in there, but the CPU doesn't care. It's still in spec.
Getting a PhD is helpful. At Abbott, for example, you start at level 17 whereas BS people start at 13. 17 means much higher pay, and your own office. So it does pay off. And being called Doctor isn't a bad thing:)
There _are_ other ISPs around. I get my internet from a guy who buys two T1s and space on top of a radio tower and has a WAP up there. With the right antenna, I have nice fast internet for $25 a month... and no dumb monopolies/bandwidth caps/etc.
Also, 3G a day is a lot of downloading. I'm going to conjecture that people who download that much are probably pirating something, so I can see why Comcast and their friends at the MPAA/RIAA/BSA would want them to cap bandwidth.
Anyway, people at my school say that the cap is "unreasonable". 1G per day is not unreasonable for a public institution to provide for educational purposes. 1G is plenty of illegal music, anyway:)
Multiscan200sf: still works fine... great moniotor (not as nice as the NEC sitting next it, though... both were free so I'm not going to complain) Clie NX70: screen fucked itself about 6 months after i bought it... i kept it in a nice metal case, so it wasn't because i dropped it or something) Clie NX60 (or something): no software updates ever Memory Stick Camera: the software included caused a hard reset on the PDA Memory Stick GPS (I didn't buy this, but a person at Bic Camera told me this while we were trying to fix the MemoryStick camera): This is great design at its best. To use GPS, you need a map. To store a map, it HAS to be on a memorystick. The GPS takes up the memorystick slot. In other words, the GPS unit doesn't work on ANY product sony makes. What. the. fuck. Monitors: My friend had two monitors that blew up a day and a month after the warranty expired. (Not blew up, but they did start a fire!!) Stereo: Optical Input stopped working. Volume control failed soon after. Why?? CD Player: My gf's CD player stopped working. They told her to take it to the Chicago store. So we went there, and they told us to buy a new one, because they wouldn't fix it. Needless to say we did not buy sony...
Sony makes things that make you want to buy them. They're cool and good looking. Then you buy them and realize what a shitty job they did on the details (sony software SUCKS ROCKS). Their support sucks. They don't update anything. Their quality control is non-existent. They don't even design the damn things right! Then they charge you as if they were good products.
I have to consciously pry myself away from Sony products. They're so neat looking... but they just aren't that great. I hate you, Sony. I hope your overpricing (think 32M "MagicGate" MemoryStick for $60), your shitty quality, and your poor service MAKE YOU GO OUT OF BUSINESS. I don't want a music player that enforces DRM. I don't want a PDA that stops working when the next model comes out. Okay? Okay?
Sorry about the rant, but beware. Don't buy sony. You'll regret it.

Not really. Once you master C-a, C-e, C-v, M-v, etc, THEN you'll never use a mouse again. Home and its friends are just too far away from the home row to be really useful. Thank God for emacs keybindings:)

Not if they sold you a cash register and left the cash in by accident. Ethically you should return the cash, but if you don't, you don't.
So ethically, you shouldn't hack the firmware. But I don't have a lot of money to buy better stuff with so I'm going to be unethical. I'm a terrible person.
It's illegal and will go away soon. You Europeans have had your rights taken away for generations, so you're used to it. It ain't gonna change, you're going to be living in a brainwashed 90% tax "utopia" for quite a while.
Americans KNOW that they won't accept this shit, and changes will be made. King George will be around for an absolute maximum of four more years. Can you say the same about your dictators?
Along the same lines, has anyone been able to find doppler radar online? Everyone calls their radar doppler, but I really want to see the storm relative velocity plots... I guess those are too hard to understand to consumers so they're not available?:(
eMac... get a freaking eMac
Heh, first time I've ever heard my employer (Abbott) mentioned on slashdot. I feel proud now :)
It's sad that cops out trying to stop murders don't have night vision goggles, but the movie copyright "infringement prevention squad" has them.
Murder? Oh that's fine, go ahead please.
COPYING A MOVIE!!!!!??!?!?! OFF TO JAIL WITH YOU.
What a great society we live in.
Self-deprecating eh. Buy me version 2.0! 1.0 is deprecated!
What was wrong with the grammar there? Nothing? Oh.

More like "Psssssst. Hey you. Yeah you. Who do you think I'm talking to... the mouse!?".
:)
What might this be a reference to?
I've always heard that religious zealots are full of hot air :) *groan*

Guess you never heard this saying...
If the post isn't on topic, don't post it!
I've always wondered where these people get the Viagra from. You can't just go buy it, right?

I made my account in 2000 or so and have a lower UID than you. So 1999 is not the right date :)

But real men SURELY don't have clippy tell them how to use the editor.
;)
I don't see that 'feature' in emacs

I license all my papers under the GPL. You can fork them and turn them in as though you wrote them. Fine with me.
What happens to the student in this case? It's not copyright infringement; he has my permission. Any ideas?
Yes. We should stop inventing new technology because it's all too expensive. All for going back to stone tools say "aye"!
*crickets*

They use two separate software packages, running on different computers. If the different implementations agree, it's probably correct.
Any reason not to use Windows is the right reason, buddy.

God damn it. I forgot what I was going to say. Hey! Shiny object!!

This should help you out, then.
