And if we make freedom of expression illegal, everyone will stop right. Ever since murder and coveting thy neighbour's wife has been illegal murder and adultrey have stopped. Oh wait. No.

You can make "fuck" illegal, but when you do the government is one step closer to jailing you for the above comment. Think about that. Society needs to be able to be free to offend other people. Because sometimes good ideas are offensive.

Sorry if it bothers your kids. Don't watch TV. It's not that good anyway :)

Umm, because there's no new MacOS software that will run on my iMac Rev. B's. So I installed Linux on both of them and now I have two more XFCE workstations for my family. It's a good deal (better than having them sit there unused), and far more useful than MacOS ever was (I installed Linux on my mac right when the USB support first came out. Now (several years later... I started at 2.2.6) I have 2 ppc Linux boxes and 2 x86 Linux boxes :)

So yeah, Linux has it's uses as well.

Think about it. If I give advice about which compiler to use, am I saying that I am a computer scientist? Am I qualified to speculate about which algorithms are best?

No. And I don't have to be. If I want to be an arm-chair lawyer (or CS person) and post my opinion on slashdot, I can (and I will! :D).

Windows is for the Mainstream crowd. I mean, most people don't care about Freedom or choice in software. Sometimes you have to deal with a "hard" installer to get a "better" OS.

I was raised on MacOS. I have no problems with anything under Linux.

I am good at reading, though. If you like reading, and don't mind having to think, Linux is for you. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it.

Hmm, I have XFree86 4.3.0 and linux 2.6.3. Both installed from packages (actually I compiled 2.4.3 for this machine, but my server uses the stock debian 2.6.3 kernel).

Anyway, yeah Debian Stable is old. That's a feature.

Debian unstable, however, is bleeding edge, but not broken. It's great. Much newer than any other distro.

Debian gives the user the choice of old packages/high reliability or new packages/average reliability. That's better than semi-recent pcakages/semi-decent reliability that Mandrake, Fedora, Slackware, and SuSE offer.

    Thanks, apt*.

    * Other distros have apt, but Debian's is better because the debian developers use it properly. I've NEVER had a dependency problem (problems yes, but they weren't too bad). Apt is the best feature of any operating system I've ever used.

Then again, I've never used a graphical installer.

Anyway, computers are much better about being consistient than people. That's why LaTeX'd documents look so good; we know what good documents should look like, and we tell the computer how to make them. People have memory lapses (wow I like that font!!!); copmuters don't.
