In my opinion, the answer to Beta is to try to create an alternative/. with the existing or an older design and try to woo people there on virtue of being better. Which of course any site that manages to be Slashdot without the new shit, and with perhaps actual editorial work, can't help but be better. But will they come if you build it?
If I have to choose a license, I usually use the University of Illinois license (a mashup of BSD and MIT type licenses), but occasionally I'll use LGPL 2.01, and if I have to I'll use GPL, but I'm not really a fan of the GPL. BSD-type licenses are more to my personal philosophy, though I do admit that LGPL is the most practically beneficial to me.
Well, yeah, it is copyright infringement...and I can imagine they're gonna get creamed hard for it, given that there's a lot of stuff from big companies among the MAME romsets.
OTOH, I'm of a mind that copyright is just too damn long, so when it comes to stuff of the age of most of the classic arcade games, I just don't give.

Admittedly I'm an "old earth creationist" who believes that there was a "re-creation" or repopulation after a cataclysmic event, but I accept that from the point that life started here, it has not been stagnant, and has been changing and mutating in ways one might call evolution.
There's ups and downs for both approaches. I admit that.
I like to use older or less powerful systems. I got a rather weaksauce Linux netbook I take around with me when I leave the house for long periods of time. I still run an IBM 5160. So naturally, I'm biased toward the optimize-for-speed approach.
When writing emulators I'm willing to sacrifice a little accuracy for a major speed boost. I had an Apple//e emulator that ran nicely on a 486/66, where the hardware emulation was handled entirely in C.
I'd like to see something like MAME written around the idea of optimizing for efficiency (speed and size) rather than accuracy.
More or less my perspective. Though I don't think an anarchic market is necessarily "free" - as much as I think that certain restrictions are necessary in a society to maintain the overall freedom (like, you can't just go around killing people... you can't just go around preying on other businesses) I tend to overall support a "live and let live" philosophy.
I tend to consider the term "libertarian" poisoned by the faux-libertarian randroids, so I don't call myself such a thing.

Most people I've seen around here STILL use CRTs.
Indeed: with private dedicated servers and VPSes getting cheaper and cheaper, there's less and less of an excuse to rely on public servers.
