Hey do you remember the episode where ricky had a rodeo show, and he thought it was a radio show, or the time when ricky and lucy were in europe. and they had to translate from english, to spanish, to french? That was from English, to Spanish, to German, to French! (Gah! What am I using my brain cells for???)
most of which never get deported back to their country because local law enforcement has their hands tied by things like Proposition 87 in LA, where police cannot ask about residency status, even if they have reason to believe the person is here illegally. I believe you're thinking of Special Order 40, which was never voted on by the people, but arbitrarily put in place by either the mayor or the police chief (I forget which), and is a continual irritation to the voters of L.A.
I have a suspicion that the fingerprinting requirement in California has to do with the number of illegal/undocumented/bad-IDed workers they have there, and they see fingerprints as the only practical way to keep people from using forged papers. As a resident of California, let me say that our state lawmakers couldn't care less about illegal immigrants. They cater to them. We've even got one legislator (Gil "One-bill Gil" Cedillo) who annually introduces legislation to give driver's licenses to illegals, and it passes - every damn year. Only the governator's veto prevents it from becoming law.
Just FYI:
A few years ago my wife became a teacher (if you want to call it that) in a nursery school. But before she could be hired she had to go to the DMV and have a full set of fingerprints done.
I know I'm really late to this conversation, but FYI: The issue here is, technically, barter transactions.
According to US tax law, any income is taxable, whether it's received in dollars, painting services, or the magical hippo bucks. Players within an MMPORPG are regularly trading virtual objects that (apparently) have real world value - i.e. engaging in barter transactions. Naturally, this just sets the mouths of the various taxing agencies to watering.
My brother was telling me about a book he recently read where the author explored the whole virtual currency thing, and as part of the book he tried to ask the IRS about paying income tax on his virtual income. No one at the IRS would talk to him about it. IIRC, they didn't even want to send his questions in for any kind of ruling for fear of the can of worms they knew it would open.
I don't have a MythTV box, but I just discovered the Zap2it web site after we got satellite a month or so ago. TV Guide's site sucks canal water, so it was nice to find a fairly simple site on which to read the listings.
I think that was the GP's point. The iPhone would have worked on ATT just fine without the lock-in. It would have also worked on T-Mobile. (Not sure if there is any other GSM network of significance in the US.)
The GP is complaining that Apple didn't have to tie themselves to ATT to market the iPhone as a GSM phone.
i'm wondering why you think verizon demanded "more" restrictions. Verizon's main restriction is almost always that you can't run any other application on your phone.
I have a cheapo Verizon phone, but it is capable of syncing over USB. And my understanding is that the phone, if you bought it directly from the manufacturer (LG), would come with the USB cable and syncing software. Guess what? Since I got it through Verizon - no cable, no software, and no option to get them from Verizon.
Verizon wants to force you to use their services for all data transfer to and from the phone - pictures, calendar, ringtones, the works.
And I understand that bluetooth enabled phones are equally crippled.
Do you think, for a moment, that Verizon would have allowed Apple to create a phone that had fully working WiFi?
IIRC, Jobs originally said it would be available in Spring of 2007, but June 29th is no longer Spring. So they've missed their original date by 8 or 9 (too lazy to look up the actual date of the solstice) days.
If your landlord bursts through your front door with a shotgun, and tells you to lie down on the floor, you are free to fight back using lethal force, if necessary.
If the state comes through your front door and points a gun at you and you fight back, even more of the state will come pouring in until you capitulate, or you are dead. If you fight back with lethal force, you'll almost certainly go to prison for it provided you're alive at the end of the encounter.
Now, what was that about negotiating terms with the government?
Actually, I was at the local Fry's one time, and I overheard one guy tell another that he had been told by Fry's that he could not purchase anything from that store for (something like) 90 days, because of excessive returns.
Heh. I bought my own domain a while ago and did pretty much nothing with it. But I recently move it (effectively) to Google Apps for hosting, now I'm using it a lot.
Ah, so that's what they just spent two weeks installing at the end of my block.
Unfortunately, it looks like something went wrong in the last stage of the installation. The block wall next to it has been knocked down, and both the new box and the old one next to it look like they've been hit by a car. I noticed a truck with a giant spool of cable next to the boxes that morning. I wonder if something went out of control (like the spool of cable)?
I have ATT DSL through DSLExtreme. While Verizon DSL had no CIR, ATT had a minimum and a maximum bit rate on my plan. ATT uses a CIR of 80% of the minimum bit rate.
At least, that was what DSLExtreme said when I signed up, though they didn't use the terms "MIR" and "CIR". They just used a term like "acceptable level of service".
You may want to check your bill if you have Dish Network. I was told that there would be a monthly charge (I think it was $5) if the receiver wasn't connected to a phone line.
They won't complain, they'll just tack on the charge.
It was found stuck on a 5000 year old bedpost.
And yes, the gum had lost all its flavor.

I'll be too busy playing with my new copy of the GPL v3 to bother with the iPhone.
This was pretty poor timing by Apple.
Careful! It requires a two year service contract and has to be activated through iTunes.
Let's all take a break from our computers now and step outside for some fresh air.
Fresh air? Is that what you breathe when you put your nose right up to the air conditioner vent?

This sucks.

Well, okay. I gotta do what I gotta do.
But does it have to be a french kiss again?

What's interesting is that everyone's talking about this "emerging restriction" as if it's new.
Jobs said, way back in January, that it would only be available with a 2 year contract though Cingular.
Why is anyone acting surprised now?
A chicken pot pie.
...And said the handheld, "Nevermore!"
I think the big problem with dialing the iPhone while driving is that it takes two hands to dial.
That means that I'll have to put my beer down just to make a call.
They pushed it alright.

You only have to situp for the ones. The zeros are free.
It makes sending pictures pretty painful, though.
Mod parent up, please.
Beautifully stated.
Actually, I was at the local Fry's one time, and I overheard one guy tell another that he had been told by Fry's that he could not purchase anything from that store for (something like) 90 days, because of excessive returns.
So he was put on the "No-buy at Fry's" list.
