    Even if the Intel compiler is faster, it's best not to get in the habit of becoming locked into any proprietary platform. How likely is it that features on which one could come to depend will be kept available on free platforms, much less future processors not made or controlled by Intel?

    It would be vira. The noun is virus, -i, neuter, second declension. Thus, the nominative plural ends in a. To those of us who are English speakers and aren't pseudo-intellectuals, the plural is viruses.

    Deter piracy? No. More likely, it's going to make a cracker much more determined to put out a working crack, and gain him all the more props for having done so. That, and it will deter a number of potential legitimate buyers in who attempt to avoid giving their money to someone so demonstrably untrustworthy.

    Exactly. This is why no free software exists, because no programmers will write software unless they're assured of being paid. I'd rather have programmers that are willing to trojan their software in the hopes of damaging someone's data be doing something else. Something in the license plate manufacturing industry seems most appropriate for such a programmer.

    Actually, I took that as the guys who designed the process actually taking responsibility, rather than shifting it to the poor techs who were doing the gluing. I agree that PC sucks, but this didn't look like an example of it.

Come to think of it, that'd be a nice workaround for that scumbag that's charging for GPL'd software and using "perpetual private beta" as a loophole.

    I think what he's getting at is that there would be an attention deficit towards his media now, as people's media "needs" are fulfilled by corporate media. But if the DRM/NGSCB/Palladium/Fritz Chip sort of lockdown were to ever come to pass, and the corporate media sufficiently pay to play that almost no one was interested, then a "vacuum" would occur which he could fill.

    It does seem like a lack of confidence of ability to compete on his part, but superior marketing beats superior content every time. I honestly don't think corporate interests will be stupid enough to turn the screws far enough to allow alternative media to take hold.

    A shareware x86 assembler some years back claimed that the author was able to tell if anyone used his assembler to distribute binaries in violation of his license. While it apparently didn't scare enough people into paying for his program (maybe they used MASM instead?), the program might be useful for busting any patents that come up around this technology.
