Ok, we get your point. Melting floating ice masses doesn't directly change the water level.
There's still a lot of ice in the Arctic, and more in the Antartic, resting on land masses. When that ice melts, it will raise the sea level. And once the ice is gone, the earth will absorb more of the sun's energy.

Basically... there's a reason why scientists believe that global warming will cause rising oceans.

Anyway, you are losing sight of the bigger picture. The problem is not so much that a few island nations will be wiped off the earth (bye Japan, Phillipinnes...) The problem is not even the threat of more tornados, or extreme weather patterns.

No, the problem is the domnio effect. Sure, it might be ok to just melt the Arctic. But once you do that, you're probably well on your way to melting the Antartic. And once that's done, you may have expanded the deserts in some other part of the world, which may release even more CO2 into the atmosphere. Guess what? That will cause some changes too.

There has to be a point, beyond which the dynamics of the climate system change so much, that it is no longer self-correcting. And we're going to find out just where that point is.

Operating systems should be robust. That's the first principle of OS design.

I'm glad you had a good experience doing tech support, but if you knew a little more about the issues here, you'd quickly realize that neither "major multi-tasking" or idiots are a problem in a well-designed OS.

Linux and *BSD handle task switching very well (20 processes is nothing.) They also avoid hard disk drive head contention, something windows has yet to manage, even in XPee. (Try doing ANYTHING in windows while a large file copy is happening. Not gonna happen.)

As for email attachments, they are not a problem when privilege levels are correctly enforced. Unless you read your email as root, I don't think a linux system will ever have this problem.

...frankly Linux, the *BSDs, and even Solaris can't handle me. I'm still the only graduate of my University's CS dept. who managed to crash the Solaris lab machines without any root privledges, and I did it more than once. I even have to reboot my linux machines at least monthly.

So I built a Tivo for about $350, no monthly fees, expandable, and the most expensive item was the PVR350.

Actually, playing Divx should be no problem for the system you outlined. I have an old 500 MHz laptop (PIII core), and I have never had a problem with playing divxes. The only real exceptions are when politicians call in cops to suppress political demonstrations-- which is of course, bullshit-- or when there are corrupt cops, which does happen. Overall, though, I feel safer with a cop car around, than without it, despite the fear of getting a speeding ticket.

The fact that you seem to overly fear and distrust cops leads me to believe that you either have
