  1. He says that casual gamers are useless on How Warcraft Really Does Wreck Lives · · Score: 1

I'm in a guild that is very casual - no raid attendance requirements, no devotion requirements, people are free to take breaks as real life requires. And we are VERY successful - we raid as a guild a couple times a week, and are currently working on our third boss in naxxramas, which is the newest hardest instance in the game.

The point is, people are gonna get addicted to stuff no matter what the case. Normal people can play the game and come and go as they please, without affecting their real lives. The guys I play with are Real-life friends, who I get together with outside the game frequently for socialization. WoW has just brought out the bad in some people, and they use it as an excuse to slack off and such.

Funny, but when I see something that doesn't interest me on /. I just scroll by it with my mouse-wheel. It's pretty easy, and takes about .23863 seconds of my time. Too bad some people feel the need to spout about stuff that they have nothing better to say about than "why is this posted here". Scroll down if it doesn't interest you, and leave the conversation to the people who are interested/have something to say.

So you think perhaps you're child has been physically abused by the babysitter - and you check your hidden nannycam to find out that yes, she has been slapping poor little billy around.

Have her arrested, gets to trial - OH I"M SOOOOO SORRY you can't use that tape it was illegally recorded.

I think there should be provisions that specify someone's right to privacy. A babysitter in YOUR house should not have any expectation of privacy whatsoever - but I think this bill is going to overshadow that thought to cover other less legitimate uses of tiny video cams...

Does this mean a possible end to those X-10 popups?

  4. I'm too attached to my mouse on Could a Pen Replace the Keyboard? · · Score: 1

I think the worst thing about the keyboard/mouse combo is having to move your hand to/from the keyboard. Several companies have integrated a touchpad into the keyboard, but I think a more interesting keyboard concept is to use one hand for mouse, the other for keyboard. They also make software which does the same thing. I tried the deme out, and got close to 30WPM, which makes me think with practice you could probably get speeds around 50 wpm.

And besides, who wants to have to pickup a pen every time for mouse-like movement? The mouse just sits there where I left it, waiting for me to use it again.

I remember a book about silly rules from pen and paper RPG's - can't remember the title (someone help me out here) but it had insane rules and funny cartoons to go along with like:

AD&D first edition - someone who was an expert with DAGGERS wasn't necessarily proficient with KNIVED (and a pic of a guy laden out with throwing daggers in every possible place accidentally cutting a finger off with a kitchen knife :) )

And other games, like an early Star Trek game, with a cartoon called "bootlegger reverse" in which any ship, no matter the velocity, can come to a complete stop in a single turn by turning 180 degrees.

If anyone has a copy of this they want to part with - let me know. It was funny as hell. Or even if you remember the title, or know of a used book shop that has one.

  8. Natural Selection on Designer Babies, Version 1.0 · · Score: 1

Since we've all but eliminated natural selection (do you think people with poor eyesight, mental handicaps or crippling physical defects would get a chance to reproduce 500 years ago?) this is a great idea. We need something in place to eliminate the weak from the gene pool.

Waaa waaaa I'm sure all the liberals are saying. But that takes away someone's right to reproduce! I think that whomever thinks this is a bad idea has forgotten where we really come from - where weak genes are removed from the mix by natural selection.

However - I don't think filtering people based on non-threatening characteristics is a good idea. We don't want everyone having to choose from babies #1-50(http://www.scifi.com/twizone/season5.html - Number 12 looks just like you) however we really need to think as society about our genetic future. Even simple things like eyesight are progressing - people with poor eyesight are not at the disadvantage they would have been a few hundred years ago. I'm all for this idea.

And really, what if we start letting people choose how their kids look? Who cares? People are going to whine that this is going to create another class of people - but I say make it open to anyone who can afford it - it's no different than being able to afford better schools or whatever for your kids.

Of course, somebody is going to complain that this is discriminatory because of (insert trait that you think makes you a minority here).

  10. I have the problem they are trying to curb.... on Rogers Cable Plans Fees to Curb Bandwith Hogs · · Score: 1

I believe that Roger's attempt with this is to get students and young people to curb their sharing of files via Morpheus/Kazaa.

I currently reside in a townhouse complex that houses over 300 units, most of which are shared by 2 or 3 university students. (267 of the units have cable internet). I currently am able to reach the blazing speed of 25 k/s downloads from sites that reside on my ISP... clearly I am not experiencing the internet as the high-speed vendors intend.

So what is the problem? I am sure it is students using morpheus/kazaa to transfer files. I'm sure no one will disagree with me when I say that students are most prone to file sharing habits. I'm sure some of them, as I did when I was that age, download files just for the sake of having them. When napster first started up, I downloaded some MP3's that I don't think I ever listen to, just because they were available for download.

Now this isn't an arguement against file-sharing. That's a completely different arguement. But I'm sure that any of us who are experiencing this think that these people are being poor cable-ISP-neighbours. I think a rate hike such as this would cause many of these students to re-think their file sharing habits, and to limit their use.

I for one am a big advocate of high-speed interent, but I also believe that these people are hindering the growth of the high-speed internet by making the experience less enjoyable for those around them. I think it is a good move by Rogers (and hopefully others will follow suit) to do this, because I think it will make cable internet more viable in high-use areas. I also think the biggest detractors of this move will be the ones who are being poor ISP-neighbours, and will have to limit their file sharing habits. They should take one for the team and think about someone else for a change.

  13. Agree about the cost point.... on Securing Win2K, NSA-style · · Score: 2

I work for an MS gold certified partner. As the network specialist, I implement MS, UNIX or Cisco based firewall/Proxy/whatever solutions, based on the customers needed. Because we're a MCGP, we have free reign over MS licenses, and can install basically all we need. This is great, because we have full access to any products we want to look at. HOWEVER, I can't imagine what it's like for businesses/persons who have to pay for BS from MS. The cost of these products is outrageous. Sure win2k is a nice stable platform (I've been running it for over 2 months on one system, very hard on it, and it seems good), but the price? OMG. Let me clarify this with one thing. I would gladly pay the price most companies ask for software because I know they have costs, and expect to make a reasonable return. However, knowing the sheer magnitude of the profits MS is making, surely their software doesn't need to be so expensive. They have billions and billions in the bank... Now I'm not saying they should stop turning a profit or give money back, but be reasonable about your greed! Ack. I also blame "boot camps" for the prevelance of MS products, but that's a whole other rant.... Max Inglis

  14. This occurs no matter what area of IT you're in... on Playing With IT, And Why It Matters · · Score: 1

I work in a largely MS shop. We have a lot of people we've hired lately who are daytime geeks only. They know MS products only (because of the ease of administration IMHO) and are totally against anything non-MS.

I blame the ease of administration in MS products of late for this trend. Someone that doesn't know much beyond their admin tasks can still pass their job requirements and get by in the IT world these days. You won't find those people working on advanced (read: UNIX based) server systems or Cisco/network products, because it involves an inate knowledge and thought processes which only comes (again, IMHO) with years of playing with computer systems (probably teen/pre-teen years) and a desire know how to do something just because, or to see if it can be done.

Placing the blame of dying dot-coms on techs with toys is just a lack of insight. Those techs with toys are probably what kept them going as long as they did. The whole dot-com attitude was of free flowing cash, and I think that if they didn't spend on geek toys it would have been wasted by sales monkeys palms or whatever or by management on golf games and the like. It all evens out, and blaming geeks is just a lack of thought about the issue.
