Doesn't MS simply have to systematically "update".NET to prevent Miguel from ever reaching the punch? How would this be different from Wine, for example?
And why is XBox going to flop in Japan whereas it has been success here? Neither of you has explained that. Are you implying that Japanese consumers won't buy a foreign product even if it is fundamentally superior (hardware)? It looks more like he was saying that it would flop for lack of games. The only problem with that argument is that he's comparing it to PS2 which came out with even fewer games (remember it came out in Japan almost a year before it came out here). Wasn't PS2 the biggest console release success ever despite having one of the lowest numbers of release titles?
Sorry, but Japanese developers aren't going to jump ship because there aren't enough release games, DoA3 is a much bigger advance over DoA2 than DoA2 on PS2 was over Dreamcast DoA2, and how many games did PS2 launch with in Japan? Was it even 6? Sorry you bought a PS2 man.

Dude, it's the most standards compliant browser available, it's fast as hell, it has an awesome email program, it's more stable than IE6, and it doesn't severely fuck up CSS seemingly randomly the way IE 6 does. The scope of the Mozilla far exceeds whatever you must be comparing it to. Netscape 6.2 is an awesome "primetime" browser. Mozilla is for pushing the envelope and testing. Why is that so difficult?
Besides, Netscape 6.2 is what you have to judge if you are talking about what has come of "Open Sourcing a company project." According to the W3C, Netscape 6.2 is the most standards compliant browser availabe. According to many browser comparisons by major consumer magazines/sites, such as this one, Netscape is also faster and less "crashy" than IE.
Jes, I come on here to read news, and I end up getting disgusted by people with bugs up their asses sounding like total assholes just trying to shit on peoples' hard work spreading pure propaganda about stuff they obviously don't have any real experience with or knowledge upon and it's just sad.
Are there any good people left out there who can appreciate a good thing and support it, or are we all just a bunch of bsers trying to scam enough money to buy status symbols while downplaying the admirability of actually doing something unique and/or significant?
I still think comparing prices of machines is barking up the wrong tree. This thing might cost a few thousand more, but the person using it could be getting paid 10 times that a year and will be able to use it for years. If working with an SGI is faster, easier, less problematic, better supported, and runs the applications the user has been trained in, then it might just pay for itself 10 times over. Saying the SGI is unjustified simply because a good PC can be had for a fifth as much is just a really short-sighted, oversimplistic way of looking at things.
In my opinion the Clies have always been the most frivolous and/or bad Palms. Non-standard screen, non-standard memory stick crap, gay leather cover and name, obnoxious wannabe sheik (but just dumb) styling. Please let's not make Clies the cool thing to have like those lavender cheap plastic Vaio pieces of crap were. It's embarassing for me that so many linux users go around showing off that they think the second-rate, pretensiously designed stuff is cool and then diss the truly well designed stuff like Apple products.
I guess the reason this thing is on Slashdot is that somebody thought it was impressive that the thing overclocked.5Ghz. That's only a 25% overclock though!
Hell even my k6-3+ here with quiet Arcticooler is doing 50% overclock. It's common practice to take (as low as 600) Tbirds and overclock them well over a gig with smaller coolers than needed for PIV (that's, like, almost a 100% overclock).
It's amazing how effective Intel's trick of reducing work per cycle in order to create more cycles continues to be. It seems like with every stepping, there's another idiotic slashdot item where everyone's like "holy shit, remember when 1GHz seemed huge!!!! Imagine beowulf!!! AMD's fucked now!!! Until this PIV came along I wasn't sure that technology in general was progressing at all, however now that we have x GHz I am assured that technology is advancing more rapidly than ever before!!!!"
I'm a "linux user", however, for eight hours a day I am forced to use Windows to access the web because my office needs to use Windows because they need to be compatible with other offices, etc. By the time I'm at home using linux, I'm glad to be able to do something other than work or surfing the web. So, despite being a linux user, I hardly access the web through linux at all.
If they are going to look at what platforms people are using to access the web, then they should do it on weekends or something.
It's like saying that 95% of policemen drive Crown Victorias because 95% of the time that they are on the streets, they are in a Crown Victoria. Nevermind that the Crown Victoria isn't theirs and that they might have 3 other cars at home which they like and would rather use a thousand times more than the Crown Victoria.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but judging from my experience owning Radeon DDR, it will be a long long time before there're decent 8500 (linux) drivers.

Of course Ikea (in case you couldn't tell by colors) is a Swedish company. However, they sell at least as much Finnish furniture as they sell Swedish furniture. Yes, they also sell a ton of Danish and Norwegian furniture.
How come whenever the Finns make something, it is always the best? Why do the rest of us even bother? I just realized that all my furniture is from there. The best phones are from there. All the best ships in the world are from there. The best architecture is from there. The best OS is from there. According to Porsche, the best car manufacturing is from there. The best snow tires are from there (forgot their name, but they're definately the best). The best gloves are from there (Sinisalo). The best snowboarders are from there. The best race car drivers (especially if you focus on rally) are from there. The best monitoring speakers are from there (Genelec). etc. Don't they have the lowest population density in the world too?

Sorry, but it sounds a little like you're a typical PS2 owner who fell for the hype, spent way too much money for the biggest let down in consoles ever, and isn't dealing too well with the fact that he/she now has the worst console available aside from the psone.
Are you saying that there is no way to make a desktop operating system based on the Linux kernel? It doesn't seem possible that you would really mean that we need to start over from scratch. I would like to know exactly which components of the Linux/GNU/KDE/wtvr system are so hopelessly barring it from being a "desktop OS." Yeah, yeah so everybody says X sucks. Aren't there lots of alternatives which are at least nearly ready to replace X though, for example? Can anyone tell me what the other major components of Linux are which prohibit it from being a desktop OS, and explain why they couldn't just be replaced with "desktop os" components?
I am so sick of hearing about Metal Gear Solid 2 as if it was actually good and justified the existance of PS2. From day 1 the console mags have always been "yeah I guess we'll admit that PS2 games suck right now, but OMG WAIT TILL YOU SEE MGS2!" But MGS2 has always sucked. It sucked on PC and now it sucks on PS2.
It's like the "import tuner" mags promoting the notion that front-wheel drive (japanese only, of course) cars with 1.6L engines are great for drag racing while reverizing about the mythical (never existed) woebegone "japanese supercar" (primarily the toyota camry with turbos and different body known as Supra).
Be too smart for that shit. Realize that these people are trying to fool you into making them money.
Even the XBox, which is 1000x more powerful than the other consoles, is just a 2yr-old PIII with a GF3 and an interlaced, super-low-resolution monitor.

Mandrake 8.1 is available on DVD too. Suse has been doing it forever. A particularly cool thing about DVD installs is that DVD drives have much higher transfer rate than CD-ROMS, so not only do you not have to waste time keeping track of cds and shuffling them in and out, but also the read itself is going faster.
yes, I always figured it was slow only because Mozilla was god awful slow at the time. That was back before releases of mozilla which suddenly made it ten times faster. Do you know whether or not Nautilus is still slow now that Mozilla is fast?
First of all, obviously, nobody cares about fps in The Sims, so noone will ever optimize a graphics card for it. More generally though, the reason one would optimize for Quake III is that it's THE standard gaming benchmark used by practically all publications.
I love ATI cards for their great image quality - that's why I got a Radeon instead of a geforce - but I'm totally disgusted with how ATI drivers are always crap. ATI ALWAYS takes months to come out with only slightly decent drivers. I'm sure the Quake "optimizations" are just to make up for more general driver underdevelopment.
Not anymore he doesn't. If I'm not mistaken, all his work since early 1996 has been done on a PowerMac. You can hear the difference too - even to a digital lover such as myself, a lot of the 96+ stuff sounds like it was recorded at way too low bit rate.
MS isn't allowed to break compatibility b/c their customers pay for software which is guaranteed to continue to work. They'd get sued or something if people were buying/selling software which could be rendered incompatible at any time. KDE and the software that needs to be compatible with it is free, so they don't have the worry of, for example, someone being pissed b/c they just spent $700 for Office and then it didn't work anymore. I assume whatever people will need to stay compatible with KDE will always be free.
