And people are worried about cancer from what are extremely low level signal-level only electromagnetic radiation from things like cell phones and power lines. Hah, they're tjust going to love this.
Hah, it's not as if a site on hardware overclocking would ever say "You know what, Apple's are better." Their whole business is overclocking hardware (thus the name Hardware Overclocking Place)!
Apples are basically the only computers that aren't overclockable (for all intensive purposes). They don't even use the same videocards as Windows, Linux, Unix machines. You can't even change the video cards in all Macs but the Powermacs, let alone overclock them.
You are assuming that the purpose of the missile defense system is to compete on cutting edge with missile technology. That doesn't seem to be the idea behind the missile defense system.
The idea seems to be to address the danger of lone crazed person getting hands on more ghetto nuke missile. You know, the guy who thinks allah has sent message by appearing in tomato to nuke someone. Or the crazed megalomaniac surrounded by yes-men who thinks all he has to do to control the world is obtain one nuclear missile and then blackmail everyone with it.
Sane people, of course, want to do everything possible to avoid launching nuclear missile. It's the crazy ones that are the big danger. The crazy ones tend to run countries that are messed up and, to say the least, do not have cutting edge missile technology.
Please explain what you mean as the best way for the US to deal with this. You say Bush should be talking to Putin more. Please elaborate/be more specific.
Used to love Miguel and I know him and Nat do a lot of incredible stuff. But this Mono stuff has always completely baffled me. Ever since the very beginning over 5 years ago. Has always seemed like terrible idea to me. Just don't understand his obsession with MS. Can someone tell me what good has come out of Mono? I would like to know (I not denying there is good, I'm genuiously interested in being informed).
So, if I'm a mechanical engineer who earned his phd in the field of energy conversion, my entire life being the study and development of methods of converting energy in most efficient ways possible and, just as an example, has personally designed a Stirling engine (the far and away most efficient heat engine cycle in existence -- only one that can theoretically match Carnot efficiency -- 4 times as efficient as gasoline engine in sizes I was working with) for use in conjunction with electricity generation, yet thinks hybrids are a stupid method of automotive propulsion, am I undoubtedly a right-wing political zealot?
The iMacs dont really have laptop parts. They have desktop hard drive and desktop graphics (not in the form of interchangeable cards/interface, but in the hardware itself). The only laptop parts they have are SODIMM memory (which just smaller form factor not slower) and Merom Core2Duo cpus (which are no more than 10% slower than desktop C2Ds) which means less power consumption/are much more energy efficient, also meaning cooler + quieter.
If you read the timeline of hayabusa's journey it has just been incredible how many things failed. I mean, practically everything imaginable went wrong with this thing. I wouldn't be surprised if their primary purpose in bringing it back was simply to salvage a modicum of dignity. Seriously. They able to upload and download its software. That should be enough to tell a lot about what was wrong with it. I mean, it's not as if they can't tell probably 90% of what they problems were just through data. I'm guessing they're just bringing it back for the sake of at least being able to claim that they got a spacecraft, that was designed to go somewhere and then come back, to actually come back, even if it didn't fulfill any of the purposes for which its coming back was to be useful.
There's really no excuse whatsoever for making a site that only works on a non-w3c-standards-compliant browser rather than a compliant browser. The only possible explanations for this are simple laziness failure to take the trouble to make it work in both (which really isn't much), or deliberate failure. It's easier to make a site compliant with Firefox than it is IE -- IE doesn't meet the standards, it has its own unwritten rulebook, whereas to make a site that works in Firefox you simply follow the definitions/guidlines set by (and exlicitely, widely documented) the W3C.
It's not as if making a site compatible with IE requires incompatibility with Firefox, it basically just takes the occasional javascript (document.write html) If(IE){}, Else{} branching here and there. This is merely a little more work. It's basically unheard of for a site from huge company like Walmart to only be compatible with one browser.
I dont think I've ever read such an admiring review of a CPU design. Last time I remember a chip sounds so fantastic was the Alpha or something like ten years ago. If a lot of all the new things really work the way they sound in theory, well then yeah I guess it's evident this Barcelona thing is really going to be something else.
The design for VW performance sounds extra interesting
Can anyone tell me why Intel is being sued by these investors rather than the most salient victim -- AMD? I don't know anything about this kind of stuff. Does AMD stand to be directly compensated in the case that Intel loses this suit, or is AMD going to merely be screwed less in the future by the cessation of Intel's illegal activity? or what?
Then you must be new. AMD has basically been outperforming Intel ever since the 1.13Ghz PIII debacle. By Thunderbird and Thoroughbred in particular, AMD was outperforming the PIVs at about half the price. It wasn't until AMD64 that AMD started charging Intel prices. That's at least four years where AMD equaled or beat Intel performance for drastically less money (on the order of 50% price and often times less).
Dude, are you really so short-sighted and that you cannot see why drugs are a major problem in baseball? Do you need it explained to you how caffeine is a little different from meth? Do you understand the reasons why it's unfortunate that more and more professional athletes are feeling the need to take hormones like Testosterone and Growth Hormone in order to merely be competitive?
The more players take these things, the more the rest of the players will be forced to in order to still be able to retain their jobs (ie be competitive)? Do you not realize how sad it is that even the most talented teenagers in the world in sports like bicycle racing, cross-country skiing, speed-skating, mma, boxing, football, etc. these days are having to face the prospect of potentially life altering substances in order to simply have a shot?
Does Apple doesn't really give a damn about this at this point? They don't make squat off the music store anyway. They make all their money off the iPod. It's the record industry that gets affected here -- it's just one less way for the record industry to make money off by selling music to this wild new breed of people who use these crazy new devices called digital music players -- people who are going to get that music on their iPod one way or another. Maybe this will actually be good for Apple. Maybe it gives them more bargaining leverage with the music industry.
Microsoft the one to finally bring to the world an absolutely universal and timeless standard of communication with which all future generations of not merely systems that humans create but also the humans that created them themselves will be compatible...
The main reason is that most people don't like Apple. The reason they don't like Apple is that they have a PC (I'm not talking Slashdotters here). They didn't consciously select a PC over an Apple based on technical merit or anything like that, they just went with the crowd. But then when everyone is talking about Apple, they get a little resentful and want to poo poo and wishfully think that the PC world is The Real Deal.
The Cnet's, ZDnet's, Computer Shopper, etc of the world too are woe to give anything from Apple the time of day -- their whole livelihood is dependent on all the crap that's out there for PCs. They have monthly comparisons of Dells versus Gateways, versus Compaqs, spyware software, jukebox junk, system backup and restore from catastrophic failure apps, and a million other crappy things for PCs, ad nauseum. Apples come from the factory with all of this stuff taken care of. There's nothing to write about them other than that the OS and all the apps it comes with work great and cover 90% of consumer's needs straight out of the box.
The keynote did not give competitors any lead time they would have otherwise not had. The iPhone's design, by law, was apparently practically entirely layed out and spec'd as part of process of obtaining FCC approval, and FCC approval takes over 6 months. The competitors already had all the details of its design. This is fact. One could argue that the iPhone's incredible awesomeness when witnessed in real life might have lit additional fire to the heals of competitors, but even that would be of dubious merit because it's doubtful there's ever been personal electronic device that's induced nearly the same chatter, speculation, anticipation, and general buzz ahead of time -- the competitors were on it you can count on it.
Six months is not that much time. When you look at the details of how Cisco got the trademark, how they renamed an already existing phone practically a day before the trademark was going to expire just to create the future conflict, and various other details, it's clear that there really wasn't any doubt that Apple would and will eventually get the name.
Announcing things way ahead of time is a proven effective strategy for introducing new products. It creates so much anticipation that people are practically nuts for it once it comes out. Look at what people did to get their hands on PS2s and PS3s -- two actually pretty mediocre products -- certainly no things so wonderful as to be commensurate with the insane appetite consumers had for them once they were finally able to get their hands on.
Moreover, by announcing 6 months ahead of time, a lot of people are going to be able to say "hold on, maybe I shouldn't sign another two year contract with whoever other provider, or buy the latest "Chocolate" or other Korean knockoff of some $800 Nokia. Maybe I can bear not having the latest phone out there for about 6 more months if it means I will be able to get this iPhone thing which will be leaps and bounds better."
The article says nothing about a laser. I have no idea why the heading on this slashdot story has the word laser in it. The article clearly states it's a kinetic energy weapon (ie it's like a big bullet, cannonball, etc).
Hmm, I wonder if, instead of nuclear missiles, we could just have nuclear generation powered railguns that could lob comet-like projectiles, thereby have the same kind of initial devastating effect, but without all the problems of nuclear fallout and radiation.
I mean, it's true that nuclear weapons have basically brought peace to modern nations through the principle/doctrine of mutually assured destruction (thats why, for example, all of Europe isn't Soviet Union now -- Russia forced to stop taking over stuff and be peaceful or else get nuked).
Maybe a new doctrine of mutually assured destruction through the crushing of cities through colossal projectiles with ungodly kinetic energy would still provide the umbrella of traditional MAD, but without that tiny little problem (which will never go away as long as there are nuclear weapons) of the potential of some lunatic dictator, who cares more about being in power than he cares about whether or not the rest of life on planet gets wiped out by radiation poisoning, getting his hands on nuclear weapon.
Dude, it's a word processor. Can you honestly tell me that even all of the upgrades to Word put together since like Word 95 could really be called revolutionary? You are correct that Command line versus Windowing/GUI was revolutionary. You are not correct that anything in word processing in the last ten years at least has been revolutionary. And how many thousands of dollars in Word upgrades have there been in 10 years? Gimme a break

Exactly. There's no reason to rely on ActiveX. Not an excuse.

Have some sense of perspective
Once you go HP you never go back. I don't care how much you loved your TI. And you can count on that ;-)

What are you referring to as previous Golden Geese anyway? Just curious.
