  1. Re:Yay on Smaller Networked Sony "PStwo" Officially Announced · · Score: 1

However, on the flip side, how many people will buy them?

This always works the same way:

    • clearing old inventory quickly: Some people will take advantage of the fact that the old PS2s will be discounted to clear inventory. So that's boon #1 for Sony.
    • updating to the latest version: Others will replace their existing ones with the new ones becauase of the coolness factor (also looks like it would take up a lot less place in the back seat of an SUV), another boon for Sony
    • reduction in manufacturing costs: The amount materials required to make a PStwo will less than for the PS2, meaning that Sony saves money in manufacturing, and can reduce the price further at its discretion, helping increase more sales.
This is hardly a new technique...everyone has done it, Commodore 64, Sega Master System, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Atari Lynx, Gameboy, PS1...the list goes on.

Theocracy: A government ruled by or subject to religious authority.

This statement is simply not true.

I'll bite. First the parent's sig says that America is ...fast becoming a...theocracy, it ain't yet, but it's fast becoming one. Lets start with a few choice quotes from GWB, and we'll let the audience decide:

    • "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did..." - GWB to Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas

    • "Our nation has been chosen by God and commissioned by history, to be a model of justice before the world."

    • "I believe God has called us into action. Our country has got a responsibility, we are a great nation, we are a wealthy nation, we have a responsibility to help a neighbour in need, a brother and sister in crisis." -GWB in July 2003 in Uganda

Now, I'm not saying that what GWB is saying is bad (I'm certainly won't say it is good though), but if the USA is such a secular state, why is God's name brought up when it comes to Foreign Policy and Foreign Aid decisions? And don't give me that all encompassing "one God" crap, because although some religions believe in that, not all do, and some of us don't believe in a God at all. So if the USA is truly secular, why mention God?

Oh, and I don't know where you get off thinking that the religion that gets given the hardest time is Christianity. The religion that lost all of its unfairly earned priviledges is Christianity (e.g. loss of prayer in school, loss of slavery (yes, slavery is something advocated by the bible), loss of homosexual persecution), but it is just recent propaganda to say it has had the hardest time when compared to all the other religions that are practiced in the USA.

I'll agree with you that the USA is about the freedom of religion, but you are blind and ignorant if you deny that the current US government does not lean a certain amount of favour towards Christianity above and beyond what is acceptable in a secular state.

Nope. Tape-worm doesn't require instinct, neither do a lot of creatures that have managed to scrape by without any predators. Another technique is to reproduce so quickly and prolificaly that it doesn't matter if ya get killed 'cause the first thing ya did after you hatched (or whatever) was have a sh*tload of kids yourself.

So you're suggesting we dump html and move to flash? Ignore the open standard and move to something proprietary? I really don't think that's a good idea.

The parent comment never said that, nor do I think they implied it. He made only three points:

    1. that this new standard could be used for more than just web plugins further down the road (a la activeX)
    2. Macromedia has a vested interest in this since MS is about to come out with a competing product and and any ease of use issues with installing a plugin could affect Macromedia's ability to compete.
    3. Flash has caught on and done what applets were supposed to do in the first place and if you tie this with point 1 then maybe you'll see it outside of the browser, and in a cross platform manner.
Although your concerns are valid, I don't think they had any bearing on points the original comment made.
