DVD+R got a different media id than DVD-R. Older drives only know the media id for DVD-R and get confused when they read the DVD+R media id. But there are utilities for most DVR+RW burners to fake the media id they write to the discs.
If you use a DVD+R with a DVD-R media id, all drives that are able to read DVD-R can read these DVD+R too. All newer devices know about the DVD+R media id and don't need the faked media id. A little more info about it. (includes tool downloadlink)
Some sony players can be flased with a modified firmware that disables region coding and the UOPs.
Here is a page with a patch for the firmware of the Sony DVP-S7000 DVD Player.
Actually a lot of stuff has been picked up and was announced at Anime-Expo two weeks ago. I think they picked up many much better series than Rahxephon. Rahxephon is just a bad NGE ripoff. Pioneer announced "Mahoromatic", a nice and entertaining series from the creators of NGE, Gainax. They also announced "Chobits". Bandai announced "Argento Soma", a nicer NGE ripoff and "Infinite Ryvius". If you want to know why it has become hard to find Rahxephon subs now, you should check this node explaining the ethics of fansubbing. If you don't know what fansubbing is all about, you may check this node or the homepages of Animeco or Elite Fansubs. Two of the larger fansub groups. Look at "Jungle wa itsumo hale nochi guu" for an example why fansubbing is still usefull.
Sony doesn't make regionless DVD players. Some of their players can just be hacked quite easily with the right cable and some floating around firmware. Most Pioneer players can be made regionfree in the same way. The MP3 player here also contains DRM and you can only play MP3s from CD-R(W)s. You can't transfer MP3s to the HDD, you can just rip normal audio CDs to ATRAC3 and keep them on the HDD. If you want you can transfer tracks to a MagicGate Memory stick but after you have transfered a track to the memory stick you can't play it from the HDD. Very likely you can't rip copy-protected CDs. In the end: nice idea, but it sucks because of the price and DRM.
Modding cheap and crappy players to be region-free is either very easy or nearly impossible.
Many cheap players can be made region-free by typing in some code with your remote or burning some modified firmware on a cd-r and flashing your players firmware. If your player needs a hardware modification or the firmware update isn't possible without a special cable, it is very hard to find someone that does the modification. Professional DVD player modders usually don't develop modifications for cheap players.
You can't accept something you couldn't have seen before you accepted it. If click-through agreements are legally binding, they must be displayed to be binding.
True, but you also need a new board and maybe also a videocard with tv-out. The divx decoder board doesn't just contain the hardware decoder, it also contains a very high quality tv-out that is optimized for movie output: no black borders around the image and higher sharpness than average tv-outs on low-cost videocards.
well, starband files chapter 11 wasn't the real news. Messing around with squid is what was important here. Without some opensource reference (or anti-ms) this isn't worth a story.
The MPAA doesn't seem to know delta sigma analog to digital conversion. You can easily build a ADC with just one digital in and one digital output pin, a capacitor and some resistors.
If they ban these components, you can still build a capacitor with aluminium foil and paper, and you can make resistors with pencils.
If you need more than 3Gb, you should just order more than one 3 GB plan. The 5 Gb and 10 Gb plans are more expensive per gb than the 3 Gb plan. And when the soft-limit kicks in, you still got 2x28k or 3x28k. You will need to use load-balancing to use the bandwidth, but that should be possible. It should work at least for web surfing.
If you don't want to figure it out by yourself, you can read some explainations and possible interpretations at
thought experiments lain. The page also contains a nice summary about all the apple (and BE) references in SE: Lain.
Try a little proof of concept: Write a short tutorial on how to capture the flag in Unreal Tornament. Put it up on your web site. Get hauled to jail.
Ok, here is a point where I can agree with you, the protections of minors is something that is way overdone in the german laws. These laws are old now and really need a revison to reflect the changes of the society. The laws for the protections of minors are very annoying for adults while they can't really deliver much "protection" for the minors.
While putting up some web pages about unreal tournament without some sort of working age control is illegal, in the real life nobody really cares about that.
You can say something against the constitution, but you can't say something like: "let's get some guns and kill the goverment and throw away the constitution", you can say things like: "the constitution failed to protect the freespeech, there are too many limitation of art. 5, therefore the constitution is a bad one"
Art. 5

Why the freespeech in germany isn't as free as in the USA is because of the second part. Most of the restrictions of the free speech are because the content of the speech is against the constiution.
The akira anime is already an adaption of the Akira mangas (comics) by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Will he do another adaption of these mangas or do a adaption of the anime, resulting in a akira movie that hasn't anything to do with the original manga work of Otomo ?

While maybe european broadcasters and media companies not really like this, i don't know of any european country where a software like this could face legal problems. VCR manufactures uin europe never faced legal problems like the BetaMax Case.
The file contains a program to generate random encryption keys, so that the keys themselves don't have to be sent over the network connection
Working OTP encryption requires the random numbers to be truely random, a computer programm can't do that. You need a source of randomness in the computer like the user or a special hardware random generator. The user isn't a solution for random numbers for OTP because you need a lot of random numbers and the user will have to type or move his mouse for a very long time until he has produced enough random numbers for a OTP encryption of a short file.
The client generates a series of random numbers to use as an encryption key. This is number is exchanged with the server through a secure process known only to Prescient, the server uses it to encrypt any information it sends back to the client, and then the key is destroyed and a new one is created.
Here the real problem of it. OTP encryption is only secure if no one can get his hand on the One Time Pad. If the OTP is transmitted over the internet, someone could easily get the OTP. If it is transmitted using a "secure process". The encryption is only as save as this "secure process". If this process is breakable, the whole encryption is breakable.
The "secure process" is also only known to Prescient. Everyone knows that "Security through Obscurity" doesn't work.
Theres a nice software named dvdsubber It can playback DVDs with alternative subtitles from a file. Many subtitle files can be found at http://dvd.box.sk Or you can just import french dvd from france, most pc dvd roms can be made region code free with a alternative firmware. Most european dvds of us movies contain the english soundtrack too & subtitles. BTW: Princess Mononoke got a french track.
Yaskawa Electric Corp., which supplies robots to auto assembly lines, has developed a $105,000 bed-shaped robot that can help rehabilitation patients who need to strengthen their legs.
Sounds like Roujin Z to me. Roujin Z is a very funny anime by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, the director of the famous Akira. In the anime the story follows an old man in a new hightech bed, that is made to care for him. You can read a much longer review here.
Yes, we know about the trace. We put it there to differentiate between the XP chips which contained our hacks to make it play nice in multiprocessing systems (aka the Athlon MP), and the chips not containing those hacks (aka the Athlon XP).
AMD already said that the only difference between Athlon MP and XP is that the MP cpus passed the multiprocessor test. I think a chip mod like that is more like over clocking: AMD doesn't guarantee that it will work, but there is a good chance that it will work.
How many Athlon MPs does AMD sell compared to the Athlon XPs ? 0.1% ? Many more cpus should pass the test and they will be sold as XP cpus.
The UN is the last organization I would use to measure my freedom. That report is so overly simplistic as to be laughable.
You are right: The report is really simplistic, but a report that uses more complex criteria wouldn't necessarily be better.Freedom is something that is very difficult to meassure. But are you really sure that the US is the most free country in the world ? I do not want to say that Germany or Sweden like the US suggests is the most free country in the world, but I think it is dumb to just write things like but there's no doubt the US is the most free country in the world. If you write things like that, you should at least explain why you think that.
In the US you must fear capital punishment. Nazi people can say what they think, but communists got big problems when they said what they were thinking during the McCarthy time. I wouldn't say the US is the most free country in the world, I think sweden is a really good guess from the UN.
For what it's worth, when I visited some relatives in Germany about 8 years ago (?), my uncle mentioned a couple of laws that I found absolutely astounding. First, it was illegal to leave your car (and house? Can't remember) unlocked for any period of time. If you are making multiple trips, you are required to lock the car between each trip. That's just the law (don't know if it was local or what).
I live in Germany and I must say that these laws are something like US sex laws, laws that maybe really exist but nobody cares about them.
I've been to Europe a couple of times in a number of countries. There is no question that Europe is a great place to visit, but there's no way I would ever live there. They have absolutely no concept of freedom.
People get much more freedom in most european countries. Look at the Human Freedom Index by the UN. Other Source here.
Not to mention that it has by far the best highway system in the world.
Never heard about the German Autobahn ? The german highway system where you can drive your car without a speed limit ?

It's a joke. It is "shift right immediate". Knuth always includes some hidden jokes in his books.

Using VBScript or JScript and one of IEs security holes, you would be easily able to copy around some data. I think it must cover cover websites too ;)
