So yeah - I have this great new drive that burns 4.7 gig discs cheaply and easily. What was it called again ? 'Dee Vee Dee Are' ?

The best part is, or so I hear, that its standard will still be around in five or ten years !

A wireless game can cost $40,000 and take a few months to develop, while full-fledged PC and console games can cost $5 million to $10 million and take years to deliver.

To say nothing of how long the damn things take to complete. Console RPGs especially got so bad back around 2000-2001 that I just dropped them altogether. I think it was Dragon Quest VII for the PSX that heralded 'Over 60 hours of gameplay !' on the cover. Over 60 hours. Outside of being just an absurd amount of time (how many slimes do I really want to kill ?), this pattern, not limited to any specific genre of game, does nothing to establish fanbases for games outside of everyone's favorite old chesnuts : high school boys and people with no lives.

Why can't we have one console to rule them all?

Because then whoever owned it would kill off all the niche genres, triple the price of everything, and never upgrade their hardware. This would have always been the case (at least, since the 16-bit days), but the threat is increased now that two of the three major console manufacturers draw most of their business from things that aren't games. Think about it.

Yes, having great games spread across 2-3 different systems can be a royal pain, but in the end, it's cheaper to buy a second system than to have one company call your shots for you.

That said, I really wished the Saturn had never existed. Not that I don't love mine, but too many of its wonderful games will simply never be rereleased on a non-doomed system. (Radiant Silvergun and Assult Suit Leynos 2, anyone ?)

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but this isn't exactly news . . . these have been out for awhile. They're of the VPR Matrix brand, which is one of Best Buy's in-house brands now. I have one of their desktops (which, yes, Porsche also designed), and it's a pretty solid box - 2.26 P4, 512 DDR RAM, CD-RW, DVD, RAID-ready, 3 Firewire jacks, de-branded Logitech optical mouse, and a 17" Samsung LCD for $1,200.
