The only reason for the two versions is so they can squeeze more money from the businesses that are using a MS backend (and already hooked). You HAVE to use PRO to use that functionalilty a MS backend provides, like Domain Membership. Exchange, SQL, MS Office, the OS, IIS, and the list goes on, if want the stated functionality, be prepared to upgrade EVERYTHING on a periodic basis.
People who do stuff like this - and, in fact, try to "tune" a Honda or other silly front wheel drive car - almost universally know nothing about cars,
You described this guy perfectly.. He claimed the mods to his Civic was giving him roughly 300+ HP. He told me stories about blowing Mustangs off the road etc.. Oddly enough, I actually did see him at the track. The tree went green and he drove down the track like the many other Civics and squeek out something in the high 17's. He knows I was there and he knows I saw him run and I know he saw me running my 91 Mustang (mid 14's/~96mph 100% pure stock with 2.73 rear and 125k miles). The next day at work he said he would have done so much better and got times close to mine if he wasn't spinning so much at the line. Well there was no spinning and his trap speed supported his time perfectly but I was not about to argue with him. This guy was in some serious denial. I am not a FF guy myself but I have seen many sport compacts with some great times, of course for every one that is truely impressive, there are 100's that are really confused.
The same plan MS had with their operating systems on new PC's. That lasted about 5 years. Now there is the software assurance program. In probably no more then 2 to 3 years, decent and very capable portable audio players will be less then $30. Hard to make a "killing" for that price.
Not a new concept but I know a dude that built his own preoiler system for his Mustang's 351C. When you turned the key to start it, an electric oil pump would run until oil pressure hit a specific limit, the pump shut off and the starter would engage and start the car. Pretty neat setup. Theory has it that 90% of engine wear happens in the first 10 seconds of running a car because of very little oil in the upper engine, I guess he solved that problem.
On the other end of the spectrum. I knew a guy with a Civic that put a 12v computer P/S fan in his air intake ducting to "increase" airflow into the engine. He used the switched +12v line from his fog lights for power so he sould not have to run a different switch to the fan. Soo.. when his fog lights were on, so was the P/S fan. I would not have believed if I did not see it with my own eyes.
Where was this actually claimed? If this is true, it is plan for failure. Eventually, iPod sales will reach saturation or at least plateu unless you really want to believe they will sale at the current rate forever. If Apple is making no money off of the songs, there will be no further revenue or a reduced revenue coming in BUT they will have the continued costs of operating the iTunes store which according to some here, is a break even or a money loser for Apple. For this to be sustained, Apple will have to make you buy more hardware, raise the price of the songs, change iTunes to offer something else for money or go under screwing everyone. If anyone has any other theory, I'd love to hear it.
I believe a pots line in your house can still call 911 even if your phone service is disconnected, an unactivated cell phone can do the same. Problem is you'd have to run to that special phone that happens to be plugged in to the phone company wired jack BUT no where is it required for you to have a convienent phone in every room in your house for 911 calling anyway. Hell, it's not even required that you have any landline service at all so the whole situation seems odd when you look at it from different angles. I think we are all stuck on "the way it was" with phone service, times have changed and at some pace, our idea of a phone will too.
You make a finite amount of money. You either spend it on A or B. The money I did not spend on a copy MS Windows for my home server went to a local nursey when I bought 10 new trees and planted them in my yard. The money was spent either way. The way I see it, Linux is helping the environment and making my neighboorhood a better place;)
Over reacting? You know, the entire non open source software world has access to the full source code of all GPL software and they do not seem to worried about being tainted by it. Just because the source is there does not mean you have to copy from it and the fact that you have it does not make you automatically guilty that either.
Reading a tilted cap is nothing new but does anyone remember in 1996 when McDonalds had the Disney trivia game pieces? Every card could be a winner if you scratched off only the right answer to a Disney related question. You recieved two of the game pieces with a supersized meal. It wasn't long before usenet posts and web pages[1] dedicated to the game answers were online. Lucky for McDonlads, not many people were online then or this may have turned into another 84 Olympics game piece fiasco for them.
[1] I tried posting links to web sites that had the answers but they are all 404 now. I guess that specific information is not really useful 8 years later;)
Spammers are not always the ones selling the actual product, they are selling "advertising" services to other businesses. They get paid to send the spam. I have no idea what type of arrangement they make with the product seller but I'd assume the spammer would get some pay regardless of how many people actually follow through and buy the product. If the seller did not get a good return, he would not use that spammer again but there is no shortage of people trying to sell something shady and looking for a way let people know about it. This scenario plays out in the junk fax world also, the company with the product to sell usually blames someone they paid to advertise for them. I assume in many cases, the seller may have really been duped.
You make some good points but some that are not well thought through.
MS was determined to be a monopoly. The rules are different. True innovation by other companies can not reach critical mass with a monopoly on the other side. Things may be extremely different right now if MS was not considered a monopoly, they could have taken many steps in the same direction they were going but were forced to slow down because of the monopoly status. Motherboards, bioses, and hardrives that will ONLY boot MS approved code. MS only internet access, everyone on the software assurance program and not just businesses, MS antivirus, MS only web browsers and all others blocked out, MS wireless drivers that only work with other MS devices, everything WMA and no more competing codecs support. The list could go on and on. Yes, MS is building a better "mousetrap" for themselves so they can catch you. Most of these products would NOT stand a chance of survival without an existing monopoly to push them. I realize many of these things are happening or at some stage of development but they are taking much longer then MS would like as they are walking a very thin line with the monopoly status they carry, almost like they are on parole. So... before you whine about people whining, realize how far MS could take this if they were not being watched.
Damn, same exact comment posted twice and both made +5. I was going to wait until the dupe story of "Google's Bigger Index" and repost it then but it would be to obvious now;)
You may have a point for Checkfree in general or my banks use of Checkfree but my Verizon payment is not a check.
I pulled up this month for comparision, it looks like they are now (or at least this month) actually ontime and credited my account when they should have:
This payment was sent electronically to VERIZON on 2/4/2004. The payee usually applies an electronic payment to your VERIZON account on the next business day. Funds were withdrawn from your account Checking - XXXXXXX on 2/5/2004.
According to my current bill, they credited that payment on the 5th like they should have. The last few months, the time they credited my account with a payment was roughly 2-3 days AFTER they took the money from my checking account. Either way, I am not risking it anymore. I pay them in advance regardless of when the Ebill states that it is really due.
You have just described the entire US cellular industry. Scope out the cellular newsgroups and you will find the same exact complaints stated almost daily about EVERY carrier.
Watch that billing with Verizon also! I pay my Verizon home service through an ebill with Checkfree. I can not simply select "pay bill" for it to be sent automatically, I have to subtract at least 2 business days because they were doing the same delay thing and charging late fees. Funny thing, I called to Verizon to inquire about the delay, they stated they have to hold on to a check for "3 to 5 days" before actually crediting the account. I explained it was an electronic payment through Checkfree, she claimed it was paid with physical check but could not give me the check number because of technical problems (I know why, because a check number did not exist). I know sometimes physical checks are sent out by Checkfree but my Verizon payment is all electronic but for some reason, still delayed.
Weight is the standard fuel measurement for aircraft and ships, not volume. The weight change/use/distribution is a major factor for stable travel so it is used as the figure. I guess they could multiply it out to get a gallon figure but everything else about these craft is operationally based on weight so they just use that.
I do not agree with preventing or removing copyright but I feel that good music would still be readily available even without the profit motive[1]. People would still create music and others with similar interests would find it and enjoy it. Linux and GNU is a good example. I doubt a majority of stuff played on the radio today would be considered "popular" if the RIAA did not control almost the entire path and price from artist to store and radio.
[1]You can still maintain full copyright of a work you create and allow others to use and modify it without charging a fee.
Go to a auto parts store or a garage and compare some prices for common wear items and general service items between those two cars. Brake pads, rotors, disc calipers, plug wires, fuel filter, water pump, radiator, fluid exchanges, etc.. All of these items wear down and need replaced on EVERY car at roughly the same intervals.
I do not know what "residuals" you are refering too but when you think of a car as anything other then basic transportation, you are buying status and nothing more (and maybe safety but that's not always directly related to price). Far too often people that buy for status mistakenly associate themselves with the status of the product but in reality, they have absolutely NOTHING to do with the car, the company, and the engineering at all, they were only the one that popped down the money and signed the paper. Anyone can do that and that does not make a person part of the car, they are only the buyer of it. When all is said in done.. I could have followed directly behind them mile for mile for probably less then 1/3 the cost over a 100k mile period. I could buy at least one more new Ford at the same time and kept it in standby and still come out ahead. My parking garage at work is filled with many well engineered +$80k cars. I drive a car I paid $3k for years ago. Every working day of the year, I make it there to my assigned spot and back just as they do. I'll spend the extra $77k on something else later in life.

After all, it's better for the economy

I repost previous +5's in later SCO stories. If caught, I claim they were mine or an unauthorized derivative but I never actually show proof.
Hey, I bought one of those from Walmart! It has Mandrake on it now though..
Lindows, the name, implies 100% compatibility with Windows programs.
To who?

The combined Cingular/ATT customer base would give them a good revenue stream
1+1=2, the goal of the merger is make the result 3, not an easy task.

What if the corn growing process produces more fuel then the tractor uses?
I got burned, the ntsrc.zip I got was not the source, it was a video of Britney Spears nude.
