if you really wanted to , you could design a sort of 'side band' to the protocol to allow the different IM producers to tunnel their own unique content/featurs, but let the basic functionality of sending an instant text message to somebody on a different client remain....

And when I think about it, it all seems to coincide with the increase in lawsuits against "patent violators", the DMCA, "intelectual property violations", etc etc. Basically, the big guys are stomping the little guy if he thinks outside the box, and it happens to present a challenge to their technology.

Perhaps Microsoft needs to wake up to this big tech killmachine that they have had a hand it making, and try to reverse some of the damage that it has done. Now people are afraid to issue security warnings for fear they might be arrested for breaking the DMCA...

ok, i did not mean for that to rhyme, but you get my point. Microsoft is a big self reliant entity that hires like minded people. Thats not who they need reviewing their code. They need objective 3rd parties with real world experience in security and systems. I'm not saying they need to put the code to WinNT on an FTP server for all to see, but loosening their grip a little.

Once MSFT realizes that they dont have to be nazi-esque with their firm grips around their code base, and they can succeed by opening up a little, they will do great things, imho. They havent quite learned that yet..

I need to choose my words wisely here, but the govt isnt the big spender it used to be, at least in terms of developing their own solutions. Especially in the military, there has been a big move to use COTS based components whenever applicable. Command and control systems are running off of NT systems nowadays.
