  1. ITYM "Ubuntu." on Vista Launch Good for Desktop Linux? · · Score: 1

Other than calling the distro "Kubuntu" I have to second everything the parent said. I began downloading distros onto a sandbox machine with the goal of being able to do everything I could do on my 2K machine with as little fuss as I can do it on 2K.

So far, Ubuntu hasn't failed me. Put another way, it's the first distro I'd recommend to my mother-in-law (and I like my M-I-L.)

I'm opposed to your introduction of S.786, the "National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005." Why don't you just label it the "AccuWeather Protection Act of 2005" and get it over with?

The National Weather Service provides accurate, up to date gathering of data and presents forecasts of weather at taxpayers' expense. To prohibit them from disseminating this through public access, and constrain them to "data portals designed for volume access by commercial providers" (Section 2(c)(2)) does a grave disservice to the taxpayers of Pennsylvania and the country in general. What you have done is nothing less than ensure that commercial weather reporting agencies have a taxpayer-funded data source that taxpayers are prohibited from enjoying.

Rest assured I will be monitoring the progress of this bill through the Senate and the House.

However, I have to put up with crap in my work persona that I would not tolerate for a minute outside of the office, because they sign a paycheck that I live on. So at work, I smile and let virii have their way with me. But at home, I keep the dragons at bay.

Mod this flamebait if you must, but the fact is that people don't voluntarily choose to run Windows 2000 or XP or anything else.

They choose the path of least resistance.

In many cases, too, probably a vast majority, the decision has been made for them by an uber-authority (an IT department or senior management team.)

Most people just want to get their work done and don't want know the gory details. And I think we both know that if there were different companies marketing different computers, each preinstalled with different OSes; say, Linux or Mac or BeOS or Plan 9 for Christ's sake -- and readily available versions of the various apps that people need -- in short, if there was REAL competition in operating systems and software rather than the lock that Microsoft has on the desktop market, that the spate of instabilities would cause people to flock from Windows in droves.

That's it, fantasy over. Please deposit 50 cents for a new fantasy.

I like that rolling keyboard stand -- seen them in the Frontgate catalog too for about a hundred bucks, but that "awful fold up TV tray" is like less than half the price. So it doesn't have wheels. Big deal.

Doesn't do anything for greenhouse gasses or global warming, mind you, but as a solution to Foreign Oil Dependency, it sounds like an interesting concept.

And you can make the case that perhaps the car companies need to be getting behind this technology in order to make sure that there's a device that will consume all this lovely thermally depolymerized chicken crap. :)

Its only purpose is to return control to register 14 (BR 14), which contains the instruction to pass control back to the mainframe; so IEFBR14 did, in effect, nothing. (Also how it got it's name, for obvious reasons.) However, it sometimes passed back a nonzero return code so they had to add another two bytes to the program; an SR 15,15 to zero out the condition code register.

The SAS-L archives has one programmer's recollection. I heard the story years ago but never found the cross reference; it was always passed down from sysprog to sysprog as part of our oral tradition. :)
