    it also painfully reminds me of the events that caused the incedents at watts, and berkley.

    i do know a little about national security, mis-information, and being a pin head. well, alot about the latter...

    it seems that everyone is spooked by the leading personalities of the middle east these days. but consider our most dreaded terrorist 'mother nature'. this terrorist has systematically destroyed whole cities, economies, familes, and download times.

    as for the utilities, this stuff should be no surprize, because its federal law not to be. but as for the corporate ego's that are 'running' our economy, maybe its time to wake and smell the burnt wiring.

    the 'choke points' that were slightly hinted at are easily correctable. as for hidden choke points. i believe that to classify this work would be on a level of the 'burning of the books' event. you can't correct what you don't know, or don't think is wrong. i classify the concept of "don't ask, don't tell" to be 'fellony studpidity'. the Slience Solution always sets a person up for future failure which will be more expensive in the long run.

    i read the article. as for the phd issue; its secondary, now. this phd canidate should be more concerned about which bank will offer the best rates, and which booking agent will get him the most coverage. i'd love to be in his shoes right now! it should end up with the bank account, the trophy wife, the mansion, and the car. damn, i wish i'd thought of it...

    I know the honorable senator means well, tries to be noble. And I know it sounds like flame bait. But consider two things:

    1. The honorable and intelligent senator spoke of an issue without understanding its most simple implications.

    2. A rancher, or farmer does not care about software pirating. But those that reap billions in re-inventing the wheel do.

    linus torvalds is a guest in this country, and a business organization like sco takes time out of their 'productive' business day to berate this person; behind their back? someone tell me i'm not reading this properly! i know its a gray area were non-nationals are subject to our country's law's. but if sco is being sourcastic, i don't see the anology. i'm begining to think that sco has crossed a line, and is in the process of damaging another person's characater. i'm not comfortable about this at all.

    back in the mid 80's, microsoft made some noise about their software being 'copied', but stated that the copyers were the ones also 'selling' the use of the product to businesses. back then, most businesses would rather pay for the license than face court time.

    i do agree that ease of installation, and use is important. for purchasers, its the main selling point. from a purchasers point of view, the easyer install means less problems in the future. i just find it to believe that hardware vendors think they will make more money ONLY selling to windows users. to ignore apple, and linux users makes you more money? doesn't make sense, but i'm not a multi-billionare either.

    Well ya got me there.

    In the article I thought the following was hysterically funny:

    "The study was conducted for the Business Software Alliance by International Planning and Research Corp. The piracy rate was calculated by comparing the researchers' estimates on demand with data on actual software sales."

    Its painfully clear that the math used here is foundationless, therefore I feel free at taking 'Pot' Shots at the article's logic. To me its obvious that the researchers used the SWAG method. To the unwashed it means 'Scientific Wild Ass Guess'. The SWAG method is a love child of the WAG method.

    I also added in a viewpoint strongly suggested by my some of my ancestors that those who 'sold' land here were 'pirates' also. Point in case is that the indigenes peoples of North America had no concept of 'land ownership' in their culture. If one bothers to read the 'Date Line' of the article, it says 'New York'. I wonder if anyone considered the 'Manhattan Purchase' to be anything less than accepted criminality.

    The Irony is that the study was done by people who studied others 'piracy', that are living on land that was 'pirated'.

    actually, from the north american indian natives point of view, 100% would be more correct.
