There is no doubt that Dr. Minsky is both very correct, and very wrong. All in the same sentence.
He's very correct about the leaps of understanding in the area A.I., its dismal. There are no "C3PO's"; there is no "Lawn Mower Man". After forty plus years, you'd think there would be a group of people with the mental 'cajones' to pull these projects off. Well, where are they?
But the real world applications of subsets of applied A.I are everywhere today. One only need start their new car, or do their laundry in a new washing machine to see something called fuzzy logic at work. For the great unwashed out there, fuzzy logic is a computers 'guessing' algorithm. A more cruel definition is, 'the mathematical joint probability'. There are plenty of examples of 'learning' by computers; this is done using 'neural nets'. Credit Card Company's can use 'reasoning', or 'truth tables' to determine if something doesn't seem right.

i can not help but wonder if the fine senator's comments couldn't be 'a diamond in the ruff'. for example, the logistics of a manned space flight to the moon are now defined. therefore a manned flight to mars can be calculated. if nasa cannot go to the moon, or mars, should business wait?
maybe its time, maybe there are enough resources in enough hands so that *maybe* people do not have to rely on nasa for answers. and just what new answers has nasa given us this past generation? business can easily coordinate with nasa by launching outside of the u.s., or in the u.s.. as for the 'military secrets' of space flight, well, even the north koreans can launch.
so, lets look at space; what can space offer business, that we can't get on earth already? i think unlimited amounts of energy would be the very least. real estate would no longer be any kind of issue. commute time? how about in minutes. product logistics delivery? just wait within 24 hours and send it down.
could it be that its time to repackage nasa so that those interested would consider nasa as an advisor in future space commerce?
could it be that the fine senator from texas for all the wrong reasons, could be right?

i looked at scox's web page. from what i see, they've made a wrapper for linux, a mail server, and their own flavor of linux. that's what i see.

there is a reason why pilots need to go around the plane, it's to see and check for any physical damage or obstructions, ( not easy to do on a 747... ).
given the above, what has me scratching my head is that:
1. the first 30 minutes of descent is the most dangours, why does it have to be this way? consider having a 'powered' decent, one could have more time to handle excessive heat events.
2. the shuttle is not set up for (a) the crew to bail out, and (b) enough fuel to get back into orbit. there are still billions of volunteers that would happily get on the next shuttle, but when the 3rd one burns and crashes...
yes the above all involve more weight. but are the experts using weight as a cop-out. maybe the 'scram' jet engine should get a harder look at. maybe shuttle crews need more freedom to make 'mid course' corrections.
not to be to zen on this subject. but consider the given senario: 1. you have a terminal illness. 2. the only way to cure the illness is with a replacement body part. 3. there may not be a body part replacement for you, as is most the time. .. 4. you are now faced with the fact that you are going to die, and maybe not painlessly.
now consider this solution: 1. you have the above. 2. you go to an out patient clinic. 3. you order a working replacement part. 4. the next day, the replacement part is implaneted in you. 5. the next day after that, you are now cured.
conclusion: 1. it could have been done with nanotechnology. 2. it could have been done with cloning. 3. it could have been done with mutagens.
my job is what some rational people have defined as a "no-good, low-down, dirt-bag, software contractor". a harsh job title if there ever was one.
my solution to doing the at best, 'questionable', task for a client? i call the f.b.i, and ask if the project is illegal. you'd be amased at the surprise responses one gets from our law inforcement. next, i call the local state d.a.'s office and ask the same question, 'which law am i breaking if i do task X'. once again i am surprized by a government agency that being used as an information source, NOT a 'come in with guns blazing' source. so far, everyone i've called has been more than willing to state the law.
here's the cap stone; i now go and tell my findings to the tasker in question, and offer either a known legal way of doing business, or i say what the laws are that are being broken, and by whom has those laws been stated by. once again the tasker sees how to use the law enforcement community for advancing american business. i've lost several thousands of dollars in tasks that were 'routed' to others more capable. i'm not in jail, and its not my problem at that point.
i don't know that much about software patenting, but the following is rattling in background mode...
given:
one can patent a process, say a software process.
proposed side step:
consider there are 256 ways to write a for/next loop using goto,if-then,assignment statements.
by writing software differently, one has changed the process in which data is 'handled'.
therefore:
because a patent describes a process(s), one only needs to describe, ( maybe pain stakingly ), a different process for doing the same thing.
i believe there are patents, which implies exceptions, to same processes.
the reason i'm thinking this is because of the problems that ford went through to side step an existing patent on motorized carriages/cars.
(Does this mean only 600,000 XP users trust Windows Update?)
I'm thinking, there are Now 600,00 XP Users that MS-trust Windows.
