Yes indeed, your facts are wrong. The Chinese scientist, Wen Ho Lee, worked at Los Alamos and did not STEAL the information as he had a right to access it. He was found not guilty of espionage, and the only thing that he was found to have done wrong was mis handle classified material.

I'm not sure where you heard about Clinton administration's sale of layouts for modernized weaponry and aircraft, but I'd like to see the source. As far as I know, the Chinese military technology is predominantly Russian-based, including their nuclear ICBM's.

  4. Same thing for human genome... on Scientists No Longer Sharing Information? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I know the humane genome project has been plagued by this since the start. The various companies working on it are very hesitant to release information to their competitors, as pharmeceutical companies could make literally billions of $$ with some of the discoveries that have been made.

This lack of sharing for sure has been detrimental to the progress of this research, but without the motivation of potential proft, I'm sure there would be even fewer people working on it. Let's face it, it would be great if everyone worked on things like this "to make the world a better place," but most of the financial backers are doing it "to make a crap load of money."

  5. $5 is better than nothing on Red Hat Network for the Masses · · Score: 5, Interesting

I don't know what the current costs of bandwidth are for RedHat, but assuming everyone who pays the $5 downloads all four CD iso's of 7.2, that's a good 2.6 GB. Sure, it's better than not getting anything for it, but the increase in traffic their going to have might hit them pretty hard. I've NEVER downloaded anything from the RedHat servers simply because the mirrors are so much less busy and a whole lot faster.

Personally, I'd much rather see the in-store retail versions of RedHat drop in price to the $10-15 range for the latest version. I'd be more than happy to pick up a copy (can't have too many Linux install CD's lying around). Most of the documentation can be found online, and there are probably a lot of people like many that just want the CD's and don't really care so much about support. Right now, the current list price for RedHat 7.2 is $59.95, and it can be bought for $48.95 at buy.com. This company really ought to think their strategy. The distro market is pretty competitive right now, and 59.95 is a hell of a lot of money to spend on a free OS.

  6. No surprise to me... on Spyware in Audio Galaxy · · Score: 3, Insightful

It isn't really a surprise to me about the spyware in Audio Galaxy, I've heard people talk about how it should be classified as a trojan rather than a piece of software. MusicCity's Morpheus is by far the best spyware free program, but unfortunately there is no linux version. The best part is that it runs on the same network as Kazaa, without the spyware (which doesn't matter since Kazaa has halted downloads of their software anyway). You can find any file you want on it, and I think it is even better than Audio Galaxy.

The problem is people already know how to handle VHS, and while they should know how handle DVD's (they are essentially the same as audio CD's), I believe most people have never learned the proper technique. From the DVD's I get at Blockbuster, it looks like people use them for outrageous things like scratching their asses, cooking, and frisbees.

  8. Re:Not a fair classification. on Australia Rules DVD's are Films, Not Software · · Score: 2

While it was true when DVD was first released that most DVD movies were re-releases of VHS with virtually no additional content, many of the new DVD's have great features. The Imax movie Everest, for instance, is available on DVD, and has an additionaly one hour documentary on the making of the film as well as deleted footage, and an interactive map.

As for the legality of copying DVD's to your computer, the easiest way to do it is legal. At my website, my guide provides an entirely legal method. The main issue is using DeCSS, which is illegal because it circumvents copyright protection. But the alternative is to manually verify the DVD by beginning playback in a DVD player program, pausing it, then begin ripping.

  9. software vs. movies on Australia Rules DVD's are Films, Not Software · · Score: 5, Interesting

I think the main difference between a piece of software and a game is how much interactivity is offered. The first CD-ROM games that I played, back in the early 1990's, were "Spaceship Warlock" and "Hell Cab". While these were computer games and as such would be classified as software, they interactive experience entailed essentially clicking on things every once in a while and the rest of the time watching the story unfold.

The main difference between "playing" these games and watching a movie was the fact that they had a "choose your own adventure" style of playback; i.e. you could dictate the basic actions of the main character. So I would conclude that most DVD movies are indeed movies and not pieces of software, because they are mostly non-interactive, and for the most part, people by them to watch the movie and not play the silly little games included.

I think my sig has never been more appropriate than now. Check out my site if you want to know about backing up DVD's.

  10. Blizzard on Pay to Play · · Score: 2

IMO, Blizzard is one of the best online game producers because of the fact that Battle.net is 100% free after you buy the game. The reason I played Diablo 2 for a year instead of Everquest, Eltima, Asheron's Call, etc. was because it didn't cost me anything more that the 39.95 I spent on the original game. I would never put out for a "connection fee" or what have you just to play the online game.
