I think that would cause sufficient confusion.

Then make up some templates for the shape you want and either (get and) learn how to use an 'industrial' sewing machine or take it to an upholsterer. Don't forget to think about the material you want and any appropriate padding and strengthening.

Depending on how you do it may cost a bit more initially - but you get exactly what you want and in the long term the TCO may be better :-)

Gee that's funny I can run Palm desktop as a user, although to be honest here - it is under win2k terminal server/Citrix not WinXP

There are soo many apps where the changing the security to one file can make a big difference.

I set ALL my win2k filessystems to users having no write access, and even my home machine I have to login as admin, install, logout, login as me, test, logout, login as admin, change security, etc etc etc.

Filemon and regmon are invaluable tools - in some cases you can just point things to different places - give everyone their own config file and change the HKLM registry setting to point to the files in someone's home directory rather than the windows/winnt directory.

Recently HP told me I had to change the whole 'program files\hewlett packard' directory to be readwrite for users to get a scanner to work - bullshit!! that ain't happening on my systems - it seems that there were 2 *.xml files that people needed write access to! Still not ideal but marginally acceptable.

Anyway there are a lot of ways to hack things to get them working - that's why I still use windows - still things for me to have 'fun' getting working. :-)

  20. I won't do anything else with Windows in Business on Would You Move to Windows Thin Clients? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've setup 2 networks using WTS/Citrix. The first was back in the days of WinFrame (NT 3.51) at a polytechnic and the second is where I work now.

We have all 80 staff around the country (currently) connecting to 1 Terminal server for Office 97, Outlook, membership system. We do have a second TS that runs PageMaker and PhotoShop. And a third waiting to be rebuilt to create a wee bit of redundancy :-)

Although our desktops are Win 2k Pro (cut right back and run the ICA and RDP clients) we have only 2 applications - one needs a local modem and the other is DOS based - that run on the local machines (apart from the laptops). We are starting to look at replacing the desktops with true thin clients (we bought the fat clients in case we had to go back to the 'old' way of doing things with the apps locally). The people with Palm devices can synchronise with Outlook/Exchange through the Citrix session. We have found that the people using laptops often prefer to dialup and connect to a terminal server rather than work off the local apps.

It means that all our data is on one server, not spread about the country. Everyone runs the same versions. We can shadow the user sessions. People can connect to exactly the same set of apps and have access to the same files, in the same locations from another office, from home, from the laptop in a motel room.

The benefits of thin client/terminal server whether it be Windows or Unix based is the only (well ok, a bit of exaggeration there) way to go.

We hear/see a lot of comments about not wanting to pay the M$ tax when buying workstations.

I think the simple solution to people not wanting to pay the Redhat (damn where can I put the $) tax, is to not pay it - use another distro.

That's what's so great about linux, you don't like redhat don't use it, you don't like Slackware don't use it, you don't like Debian don't use it etc etc etc.

I thought the whole thing about OSS was choice, we just need to convince those brainwashed by Redhat (such as Oracle) that they should aim to support other distros, come up with a certification program so that people can build their own that is supported by Oracle.

    Just my humble opinion.
