  1. And a thief who hurts himself breaking into your house shouldn't be able to sue you for damages but he can. In general taking a picture isn't an issue (although that might depend on what else is in the picture) but recording their voices would be.

  2. The real reason, it was interfering with the NSA backdoor that watches you sleep.

  10. Anonymous eye scans? Isn't that like saying anonymous fingerprints? Aren't eye scans one of the biometric methods you can use to identify people?

Was this done on an opt-in basis or did the NHS just decide to give everyone's private medical information to Google.

Automatic Updates on any sort of mission critical system is a bad idea. Over the Air automatic updates are even worse.

How bad does the situation have to get before people will start to build in proper security starting from the design stage. Every industry using electronics in their products needs to hire a bunch of paranoid security engineers and give them veto power over everyone else.

  15. What's wrong with the argument? on Elon Musk: 'One In Billions' Chance We're Not Living In A Computer Simulation (vox.com) · · Score: 1

Nothing can continue to expand at a geometric rate forever -- that's what's wrong.

Now that you have proposed this concept, your next task is to develop a way to test it. If there is no way to test it then it's a meaningless distinction.

We are bound by reality, the nature of reality is a moot point as it's unknowable, you can't step outside of reality to examine it. Anything outside of reality is, by definition, unreal. So your theoretical simulation is, by definition, unreal and therefore does not exist. QED.

I don't know if my mind is blown but it's certainly confused. Your first question is unclear, do you mean is there anything that he has said that I believe, or do you mean will I believe anything he says regardless of how bat shit crazy it is? And what do you mean by believe? Do I believe he said it? Do I believe he thinks it's true? If it's not an opinion do I think the things he says are objectively true? If it's an opinion do I agree with it? And your final sentence I can't parse at all.

  21. The problem is if you start target me with ads for AA just because I bought a bottle of Scotch. You're defaming me by implying that I'm an alcoholic.

If I was pregnant woman and suddenly started getting anti-choice ads I'd be pissed, either I'm not planning on having an abortion in which case your ads are just harassing me or I'm planning on having an abortion and you're butting into my private life.

  22. Re:VoiceOfDoom, *FUCK YOU*!! on Smartphone Surveillance Tech Used To Target Anti-Abortion Ads At Pregnant Women (rewire.news) · · Score: 1

Pro-Abortion is the wrong label because I'm not pro-abortion. I'm not in favour of women having abortions, I feel that it's a private matter between a woman and her doctor and none of my business. So I'm pro-choice, as in, it's the woman's choice.

  24. I'm on both sides of this issue. On one side if I buy a thing I should be able to resell it. On the other side, a virtual product is fundamentally different than a physical product (intangible vs. tangible) and if you want to be able to resell a book, buy an actual book.

I've purchased a bunch of Music, TV Shows and Movies on discs and if I sold them I'd have to ship the discs to the new owner. If I bought a song (DRM-free) through iTunes and went to sell it how do I package up the song? I've got a copy on my phone, my laptop, my media server, my backup server, backup optical discs, on some cloud storage, a copy on a CD for my car and possibly laying around on a thumb drive or two. If I miss deleting a copy from an old backup (how do you delete a single file from a burned-DVD anyway?) am I now a criminal?

Resale rights can be accomplished through DRM where you would have to deauthorise your devices and then register the change of ownership with the original supplier to allow the new owner to authorise his devices but that has serious issues that don't affect physical items.
    1. You can only do this with the assistance of the original supplier and they are very likely to restrict, limit or charge you for doing this. -- I wouldn't accept having to go through Dodge to sell my truck.
    2. Your ability to resell your items disappears if the reseller disappears or just stops handling the re-licensing. -- Pontiac doesn't exist anymore, that doesn't mean I can't sell my Sunbird.
    3. Your customer has to enter into an agreement with the original supplier (a third party) to complete the sale. -- I don't have to enter into a licensing agreement with BMW to buy a used 4 Series.

On the whole, I'm fine with the first sale doctrine for virtual goods not including the right of resale. But I don't have a strong opinion on it, this is an issue needs to be discussed much more.

  25. "It is exactly why the law was enacted in the first place, to protect young people from pervasive data collection."
Why just kids? Why not just make a law that protects everyone from pervasive data collection?
