  1. You guys have it all wrong on Early Man: The Cause of Mass Extinction? · · Score: 3

It isn't our fault we started killing all these animals. I mean 4 millions years ago we were happy starving, surviving day to day. And then one day a weird black rectangle appeared in our cave entrance, and taught us to eat meat and beat the shit out of each other. We weren't smart enough to get the fact that we would have been better off starving, and being prey to the cheetah. Blame it on those damn monoliths. They did it!

  5. Re:Wine vs. Loki on Ports vs. WineX, What's Best For Linux Gamers? · · Score: 1
This is exactly how it should be. Not all companies are going to port their games to linux (blizzard, MS). But some are now, and we will probably see more later. Running native is always faster than running on top of layers (careful, don't use the word 'emulate'). We must continue to support Loki and others in this regard-- to have more games run natively.

Also, continue to improve wineX and other MS layers for linux. This allows the other games to be 'ported' without having to change the binaries or code to the OS. Plus, this allows less people to require a dual boot machine so they can play their games.

The right tool for the right situation! Ported for those that will/can, and emulation (sorry) for those who can't/won't *cough*M$*cough*

Uhm, isn't this version 5? It shouldn't take 10 versions of a software to get it right, does it? Or maybe we are talking about MS here, and that changes the rules. I am actually impressed that MS is pushing the patch for this like they are.

Give them props for doing what we always slam them for not doing-- responding quickly to a large exploit.

    mod this guy up

And this is why we have shitty software, OS's, hardware and tech support. MS pushed themselves all over the place-- just look at those adds of those servers running "24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no downtime". They don't run that way, but hey, tell a few lies, and people will buy your shit hook line and sinker.

Society in America is about 'keeping up with the jones's'. I hear of success of other OS's in other countries, probably because they are more concerned about getting the most for the best price.

  13. nice going MS on MS Wants To Know Whose PC Is Windows-Free · · Score: 3
You would think, that with up and coming OS's like linux, *bsd, QNX, OSX and others (BeOS, AtheOS), that MS would start thinking about retaining customers, not out and out forcing them to the conclusion that they have no control over what they are purchasing.

I hope this causes the backlash that everyone has been waiting for. But it probably won't. It will either become unpopular enough for MS to stop the program, or else they will convince those convinced otherwise that they should 'come back to the light' and use MS products.

I do think, however, that the rift between those who like MS products and those who don't, will widen. And the 'OS war' will be carried from the server room and desktop to the manager's and cio's offices.

But this is a good thing, no?

  14. dumb and dumber on 'Server, Heal Thyself,' Says IBM · · Score: 4
While this is definately a great selling point to PHBs out there who know next to nothing about computers and what it takes to run a good server environment, I doubt it will be nothing more than a system that emails someone when a component fails.

What will the future hold for IT pros? Are we to be relegated to the same status as an assembly line worker? We are required to know a shit load of info- learning at work and on our own time to keep up with current technologies, bugs, security issues, etc, etc, etc- yet PHBs don't want to pay us like they would for an attorney, or engineer.

I just hope that IBMs best is only good enough for everyone to realize that you can't replace a skilled IT pro for a stupid box that can't even get past a 'non system disk error'.

And here's why. I think Mandrake is THE future desktop distro. If and when they put apt for RPM into the distro, I think they will be the best out there. Making the installer better will give this distro that much easier for new users to move to linux.
Whether I use it or not, it doesn't matter, Mandrake needs to be as easy to get going as possible. Slap apt for RPM on it, and it might be able to go head to head with Debian.

RedHat is simply seen as a server distro. SysAdmin's are dead heads who need something to do while installing the OS.

    Suse is actually getting better.

Progeny would be the other distro to consider. But let's wait and see if it catches on. If it does, then progeny would win the award of your talent.
