you're forgetting 2 facts: 1 - the iPod regularly sells in the same $300 (and up) price bracket. can you imagine the what apple would do to the phone market would if they replaced the Hard Drive iPod line with hard drive iPod phones in the same price bracket? wow. 2 - metroPCS. i have a metroPCS razr. $250 out of my pocket, no contracts. in hindsight it was a crappy deal, but it made a statement. i will NOT stand for being forced into a contract.
-Terminal is certainly better than cmd.exe or straight xterm. However, it doesn't do tabs or any of the really whizzy stuff that you expect on your Linux/BSD box's kterm/gnome-terminal. Incidentally, what do other slashdotters reccomend as a replacement?
I just got hooked on Path Finder as a Finder/Terminal/Console/Preview/TextEdit replacement. i havn't run it's terminal though it's passes yet, but i would be surprised if it doesn't have tabs.
i got one around a year ago at my local computer recycling center for around $100. i still haven't changed the toner! watch out though... the lights dim when i turn it on...
It's all rather frustrating. You'd think the manufacturers focus would be on clean, fast, easy to use systems, rather than on near-useless extras that make their hardware seem slow.
I can name one computer manufacturer who does focus on clean, fast, easy to use systems. They even let you install windows should you choose to do so.
Why didn't they test the N64? They have the Playstation and Dreamcast, both of which are from that era.
grouping the dreamcast with the N64 and PS1 is like grouping the XBox360 with the PS2 and GameCube. the DC was a 6th generation console, just like the PS2, GameCube and XBox, it only shipped a bit sooner than the other systems... hey, isn't that the same path that the XBox360 is taking?!
you do have a point though, it is a bit odd that they tested the PS1 and not the N64 or Sega Saturn (both of which shipped AFTER the PS1) or any of the many lesser known 5th generation systems.

the OS X port of Q3 played better than the OS 9 port. UT otoh, worked better under classic than the crash prone OS X port.... to bad 3d acceleration doesn't work under classic.
I'm not saying that it needs to be a powerhouse, but the R7500 in my iBook is poor.
todays iBooks (read those that are shipping TODAY, not Tuesday) have Radeon 9550's [source - good until MacBooks ship. source 2 - good much longer]. sure your iBook may have a crappy graphics card, but they don't ship with that bad graphics any more.
It had troubles running UT99 and Q3, that's pretty sad. i call bullshit. i ran both games on a rage 128 which handled UT99 and Q3 just fine with quality at medium low levels. The Radeon (later renamed Radeon 7500) was built around running those games!
good for you. i got the first dvd release as a freaking x-mas gift. i tried to hold out. i really did. damn parents who think they know what i want. gah!
where do you get your figures? i've never seen a way to measure overall power draw of a system (only temperature of various components) without getting out the multimeter.
i would seriously like to know. i love seeing those kinds of statistics, especially in real time!
