I'll reserve judgement on this until the next gen phones come out. If you could fit a mini's harddrive or a gig+ of flash into the phone it might make a good gym/workout/running/beach companion.

Biggest downside would be battery life. If my mini dies mid-workout I'm annoyed. If a cellphone dies because it's been playing tunes all afternoon, that would be a *Problem* for most people.

Having the ability to hear/answer calls while wearing my in-ear buds would be a plus.

I'd still expect to load my songs via my Mac. I can't imagine Verizon wouldn't charge for the time it takes to download wirelessly, even if they were providing a for-pay music download service (cable modem + firewire would probably be quicker; fullscreen music site has to beat a phone display).

As to ease of use... No clickwheel, nogo. I've used a Rio and I won't go back.

I'll see what Apple/Moto come up with.

I gave up on Dreamworks' animation after viewing Antz vs. Bug's Life. Two totally different attitudes towards what cartoons should be. DW has always been a Pixar wannabee. Small Soldiers vs. Toy Story. Shrek vs. Monsters, Inc. Instead of playing to the "child" in everyone, they feel it's necessary to insert "adult" asides to keep the parents amused.

Slight topic drift: If you've seen the extra making-of material on the LotR extended disks vs. the new Star Wars, I think it reflects a bit on this. You can feel the love behind Jackson's film; Lucus just comes off as a PHB.

    1. ditto to DVDs. But I don't watch TV/don't subscribe to cable (except my cable modem). If I want to escape at home, it's a DVD, not a CD.

    2. not in my 20's either, but not buying diapers (thank god).

    3. I've replaced what I could, but some albums never made it to CD. Others I've looked at, and decided I'd never listen to them again. iTunes has allowed me to download one or two cuts from otherwise forgetable albums.

    4. the number of MASS-MARKETED artists (clearchannel) creating music I enjoy HAS decreased significantly.

I've hit the big 50. I don't particularly care for geezer rock with a very few exceptions (neil young comes to mind). Oldies stations make me puke. The same 50 songs they've been playing to death for the past 30 years.

    I am too old/white for hip-hop/gangsta.

I do like techno/industrial/trance (great for coding). Streamed from the web. Try finding most of that on CD.

But the biggest cause of my greatly diminished CD consumption was the great con pulled during the 70's when the record industry's answer to AOL (album oriented rock) was the one hit wonder. One good song with lots of air play imbedded in an album of pure shite. Usually easily spotted (once you became aware of the practice) by the sticker plastered on the CD case: "INCLUDES THE SMASH HIT ..."

So fsck the RIAA. They did it to themselves. And judging by the news of per song/album price increases for online downloads, I'd say they haven't learned their lesson yet.

I ordered mine a week before they came out, never thinking they'd be hard to come by. Now I'm glad I ordered early. (Based primarily on a positive review by Walt Mossberg of all people.)

I'd resisted the earlier iPods due to the disk drive ---didn't think it would stand up to daily trips to the gym. It's replacing a flash-based Rio (which served me well for 3 years, and also cost $250 new).

After 2 weeks of use, I'd never go back. The On-the-Go play lists make it easy to pick out an hour's worth of music (enough to get me through my workout without having to fiddle with the dial) and vary it daily (without having to connect to my mac).

Don't get me wrong, I loved the movies, but some of the effects were bogus. Don't know if it was time, money, technology or all three. I don't expect a remake in my lifetime, so how about revisiting it every couple of years to tweek/update as technology evolves.

Having just rewatched the extended TT DVD last night, I couldn't help but cringe at the funhouse ghouls in Frodo's Dead Marshes plunge. What's with the dead/cursed == green glow? (seen again in RotK).

If MS, Adobe, etc. can get away with annual upgrades, why not a franchise like LotR?

If you know how long it takes to get a task done, look at a clock before starting (1/2 an hour to get to work? the radio will let you know when to leave...) and be done with it. If you don't know how long it will take, your watch won't help you.
