Its is the Fault of the MS programmers in the end, since win95 didnt have a security model it didnt matter where you wrote a file or change a registry entry.
But since NT things are difrent, now you cant just tweak the settings and write files in the windows system folder, which loads of programs do, we have created a sort of MSI package's here at my work for about 100 programs, nearly half want to change/create admin only keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or want to create a temp file in c:\winnt\ this attidude is created cause of i think MS, since they did the same some years ago, they had to change now the world has to follow as they have followed before..
but users just run as admin and dont ask software company's to change the software, IT departments find repackaging with rights on sertain files and registry entry's easier then forcing software developers to fix the problem.
Symantec for example sells winfaxpro as a win2k complaint yeah if your admin ofc....i took us about a week to get it working with a user account, without to much security breaches to the file system and registry. everytime we thought we got it all another key needs to change and if not crash;-)
so yeah its the programmers fault for not following the guide lines, but its MS's fault for giving a bad example.
I am taking the road of i forgot, about 2 days ago i had to sign some "you have too keep everything you see here secret document cause your a admin of our network" which i disagree with. So i figured i could or make a big fuss about it or just ignore it. The fusss making part could be funny since i work at a state funded company, but i thought what the hell, they will prolly forget also since its only a formality.
Nice, yeah i understand and agree, never looked at it in that way, personaly i own a copy of Mac OS X so i see your point also i have IRIX 6.5 running so i know how it works. i was foolish *bows*
but atleast i made you write this great comment to explain why we need a vector world for our computer displays:)
i wonder why you post on Slashdot, why not shut up and code something ?
err... people like to hear them selfes, by talking people can give there mind some rest and by talking crap they thought over and over again they get some small comment from someone that they then add to there idea and make it a little bit better and so it goes on until you need to talk again...
But when i switch to a difrent resolution i hope to get more room, i dont buy a bigger screen for more detail, i want more work space.... but then i have multiple monitors, but still i dont think your point goes up always. But rescaling like i want would be nice:)
I have suggested the same thing, something like infect, spread, after a couple of new infections close shutdown the network services or something and then do that for every remote exploit out there...and ofcourse leave a nice note what happend:) or just format c: or rm -rf/ if they dont learn;P
I think that would clean up and make the network much faster:) unethical ? why, i think people who slammer me with there stupid unpatched systems are unethical, trying to infect me without even knowing it...the bastards
This is not about life or death, its about seeying or not, i'd rather die then be blind personaly.
I personaly wouldn't trust any MS code either for critical application, its like buying a TV from a cheapo brand that keeps braking, you wont buy another things of that Brand again in the near future or would you ? MS was/is such a brand in my oppinion and still is, i am still using MS products in a daily basis and trust me even its new stuff is still crap (but thats my personal view).
its no shame, its just a way to go. i think its a wise choice, SGI can do two things, die or stay alive, this will keep them alive for the moment.
And i love to have some old SGI box with 64 cpu's after they arent in use at the nearest company any more:) just like i got a nice very cheap SGI indigo2 now at home:)
Its just holding me back, but then i am still young 23 now. And i started working fulltime very early at the age of 16, so prolly when i am 40 or something i would like to hold one to one pretty oke job, but i still wanna see something of the world and how it works:)
I think they hit a very high percentage of all windows machines world wide. More is that most people dont know they are infected, how many scriptkiddies you know who have a bunch of subseven boxes ? wonder how they get those....dream on..
but maybe i am wrong lets read the wired article now.
What your doing there so long ? falling a sleep ? I think new jobs give me a new chance to learn something instead of keep doing nearly the same with the same people over and over again...
Personaly i would be very bored after six years programming at the same company. Even in those 3 years aprox i did 3 difrent functions at the same company and now doing the fourth, in which will looking for a new job somewhere in the world...
Or just small gangs, its all about skills, outlaws prolly play 24/7 and know every little thing there is too know about the game, including any little cheat that might help a little bit in gaining a advantage..
We got killed and killed again in Ultima Online just by one player, maybe we sucked, but i think he just was a skilled 13 old r0xx0r...
Now with real money maybe playing robin hood (wow i just noticed robin sounds like robbing hood, he is robbing every one in the hood) will be worth while stealing of the cheap as outlaws who have more stuff then others have anyways;)
My first Computer only had a CLI;) (Acron Electron)
But that doesnt matter, i like a GUI much better unless they start messing with system stuff since its to hard to overview configuration in multiple tabs then it is on one long text file...but thats just me maybe...
I computer should be a tool, but it isnt its hardcore computer science stuff atleast my expierences with for me very simple computer problems as two hardware pieces using the same IRQ to Communicate over can bug a User for weeks. Its not the just the Interface that needs a upgrade its the whole "Computer" concept.
Personaly since i bought a iBook i like to advert Apple computes for users since they still sell in "one" piece with software that works with the hardware. Like i was used with my Amiga and Atari Computers.
Personaly i think Newbies should learn the hard way the good way the way they will understand in the end, instead of them knowing how to insert a redhat cd and install it and press buttons so i can come over and fix it when they have problem, like with there windows machine's they totaly screwed up. Newbies shouldnt be allowed to use computers without supervision of and experienced user, what the heck they should get a Computer Usage Licence! just like with cars;)
Or maybe Rapid Bridge Development (RBD) then i wouldnt drive over it, speed is our problem not the knowledge.... Lets slow down and do it right in first place. If you make a very big mistake in a birdge and it collapses you will be held responsible now with software noone is responsible since the licence reads so.
Think about it, when your car explodes due a mistake in the car design you can sue the car company, sertainly if they knew they sold a flawed unit, if they would rush car designs like they do software designs they would know that it would hold some flaws...
Maybe not just the designs some designs are good i guess, but then the implementation stinks...in the end.
Fix it Fix it Fix it!:) Wake up and smell the coffee...
Indeed Gangwars would be a great setting, or mayeb something like Counter Strike, Gangers VS Swat teams and FBI :)
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/pfuca-store/
i got one and love it, they also sell seperate numeric keypads for it...

I welcome this news, since maybe now i can create an easy port of freeciv for mac os x. Thanks Slashdot.

All these new Desktop computers seem to have Power Down buttons on the keyboard and i love pressing them while walking tru a computer store....
Sorry....thats just the way i am....cant help it

They also have a Linux version,
i personaly think this book rocks.
I bought it after a review on slashdot,
let me find it: http://books.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/10/10

And sue those aliens later!

Its not that its a real policy, the software developers dont want to create crap, but management doesnt care really and they only see dollar bills.
