  3. Idea: 3d-2d interface. on The Next Computer Interface · · Score: 1

Creating a 3d interface only makes the whole interface concept more complex and will enlarge the learning curve if you ask me.

Creating a Simple 2d interface build up out of 3d objects/widgets could lower the CPU load, cause instead the GPU is used for drawing complex interfaces. You could then show the Interface in a 3d structure to show how the program works or how it calls functions on what objects. So people can understand how the layering and program works even for non programmers...(this can also be done with 2d objects ofcourse, but i guess management needs a good visual to understand what your saying.)

When the whole 2d interface is in 3d ala vectors, that means you can rescale your whole interface with ease, more idea's come up here like texture mapping a streamming video on a cube, you can move, rescale and turn it around with great ease again, without giving your cpu a hard time.

I think we should use that great GPU in our computer systems for something more usefull things then games and rendering, sure people can come up with good idea's about this...

Everything is becoming 3d today, which i think sucks, but in the end thats way we are going, now if we implent a 2d interface in a open 3d API, then all kind of programmers and creative people can start playing around with trying to design nice 3d working interfaces which will be of ease in use. But we can keep going on with the way we are working now.

Q: When I specify SDL_FULLSCREEN in X11, the screen goes black and my window is centered in the middle, instead of covering the whole screen!

    A:

X needs to be able to switch to the desired resolution. For this to work, you need to have the resolution listed in the 'Modes' line in your XFree86Config file (and your Monitor must support it). SDL does not currently support changing resolutions on X servers that do not support the XVidMode extension.

The following example is taken from my config for XFree86-4.0.1, but 3.3.x is similiar. Note that if your monitor isn't capable of using these video modes, the X server will drop these modes from the list of available video modes.
    Example:

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "3dfx"
    Monitor "Samsung LCD"
    DefaultDepth 16

    Subsection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "320x240"
    ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    EndSection

Note the different entries for 8 & 16 bit screendepth. I.e. the 320x240 resolution is *not* available when X is started with 16bit depth (the default).

To test these entries, restart X after you modified XF86Config and press ctrl-alt-plus and ctrl-alt-minus to cycle through the resolutions.

There is no real other draw back, except maybe that some people can think its less secure cause 'hackers' can find holes in the software to exploit them.

I hear people saying things about its free, and all the other things they think that is open source, but it just means you are able to read to source, this gives you no right to use the source for your own good. There still things like copyright etc....on it.

I have been using open source software for about 4 years now and the only con i have found overall that there is a load of unfinished and undocumented software that or doesnt compile really nice on my system or fails to do what they say it does. But then this also has happend to me with closed source software except that i couldnt compile that myself, so i see no real difference here except that i could have fixxed the open source software myself cause i had the source.

Last stuff i am goign to say is that i think cause of not enough people jumping in the train of open source your options are a bit limited if it comes to use only open source software for all your needs, maybe all the software is around, but that doesnt mean they always work as good as there closed source counter parts. But open source is like giving away you ingredients its an honest way of business, cause you can check whats going on, you can check for qualitie ( or however you write that word.) and be damn sure it works liek you want it to work, even if it would take the same time as writing the software your self, you have the option.
