    The next steps seem clear:
    1) Microsoft should show exactly which clause of the license they believe is in breach.
    2) Jamie should explain how what he is doing is not a hack, and detail the publicly available methods he is using for integration.
    3) Microsoft should have to prove that what he is doing is a hack, and detail the undocumented methods he is using for integration.
    3) Microsoft should explain how PopFly integration into Express is different than TestDriven.Net integration into Express.

  5. Firewall on What Is Fair Technical Support From a Manufacturer? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Assuming you have set everything up correctly (and I'm not saying that to be an ass, just that a lot of times people complain about hardware and it's configured incorrectly) and it is not working as advertized, then you certainly should be upset with the manufacturer. However demanding compensation from them is a bit much. Part of your job (I am assuming) is picking the right hardware for your company. That means testing it before deployment in a production environment. If you deployed the wrong hardware (even if on paper it looked right) that's not the fault of the company.

  6. Laptop Idea on Laptops with Big RAM? · · Score: 3, Interesting

How about a small, light laptop that you are comfortable using, paired with a powerful server back in the office. Pair the laptop with either an internal or external EVDO card (we use the Sprint Novatel EVDO cards), IPSec VPN back to the company, and then RDP into the server. Of course you could still run some applications (email, web, etc...) locally, but the really beefy stuff should run on the server. This has many performance advantages, but also reliability advantages in that your works can be on a server that is RAIDed and backed up. Additionally you can compile code and run tests on the server when you have to turn your laptop off.

You didn't give much detail into how many users and how many sites, or into the file access method (CIFS, FTP, etc...?), but we do site to site VPNs between locations, and locate RiverBed boxes at each site. Depending on the site and number of users at each branch you could pick a box that works for you. We like their boxes because they are auto-sensing of other RiverBed boxes, very easy to do any additional configuration on, and have wonderful reporting.

It is a wonderfully designed program, the interface is quite nice, and it is very stable and full-featured. 1) When your power goes out, the phone still works. Your computers (and VoIP phone) do not.

Not if your networking equipment and your ATA is on an UPS. I know I had a short outage shortly after moving in, and I was still able to use my Vonage service.

    2) When your Network connection flakes out (as it is known to do periodically), your VoIP phone goes silent.

True, but most of the time the VoIP provider knows because it cannot contact the ATA, so it reroutes calls. I have my account set to route calls to my cell phone if the ATA is unreachable.

    3) When your ISP starts to block or throttle back VoIP calls which are not routed through their own VoIP service, your VoIP phone is almost useless. You can thank the lack of regulations for this.

That is the one thing I am a little bit worried about. I know many ISPs are rolling out their own VoIP service, and they'll want to give that higher precendence over other providers' traffic. That being said, if I am paying for 768 upstream, I expect to get it. I guess this is where the free markets, and competition will kick in. If Provider A throttles back VoIP and Provider B does not, Provider A may lose customers.

That in mind, why don't the "folks" have the e-mails that he sent to them? Wouldn't you keep (even treasure) the e-mails of a family member, especially if the family member was in a situation where death may be near?

Or even if they deleted the e-mails, I'm sure they replied to them first, so maybe they have copies in their Sent folder.

It takes two people to e-mail, and even if Yahoo! won't release the e-mails I'm sure the OTHER end of the conversation may be more willing to do so.

It's unfortunate that the CIO wants to cut this -- there is definite value in having reachable employees (whether via cell or text message, pager, or able to VPN in through high-speed internet), and most smart CIOs realize that the costs are quickly covered by the expenses saved via a remote employee and that it is a worthwhile cost. When I started my current job I actually had two items put into my contract, one, that I would be able to expense business-related expenses (most people probably have this) and that the company would pay for my home internet and cell phone bill. They were more than happy to do this, as I am only one of two IT people supporting 20+ servers, 25+ TBs of storage, firewall, VPN, laptops, desktops, and basically the entire functionality of the company (we're a data / tech company). Even the employees that just do production work expense their cell phone and internet access, and the company has no problem, and they are even buying most of us laptops (Latitude D600s) to encourage us to work remotely (but not requiring it).

I beta tested the Iomega Rev, and if you'd like to see the size, you can compare the cartridge size to that of a Jaz disk here. The drive comes with a bezel to mount it in a 5.25" bay, but it also fits snugly in a standard floppy bay. The disks (not tapes as other posts are calling them) are quite small, and feel dense. I had no problems with the drive or media failing during testing, and the drive comes bundles with Iomega Automatic Backup software (good for home users) as well as Ghost, and can be written to as a standard drive as well (drag/drop/etc).
