if you design websites just so you can watch AOL butcher your pages! since we develop educational materials, something like 40% of our clients traffic is through AOL. wouldn't be nice if an open-source linux platform which could be rebranded by AOL (similar to mozilla), were to be developed in conjunction with mini-beast? the platform could be a minimum install sort of solution with necessary applications...

while labor costs are certainly one of the larger components, planning, project support, infrastructure all cost. this is like saying that houses cost a lot due to the fact that brick layers are high priced labor. ok we'll use aluminum siding! 10-15% reduction... ooooh! savings! poor planning--scope creep, requirements, project management, approvals--are where the savings are at. but, the larger question, especially for americans, is why do we expect something to be cheap? this is not a criticism of open source, since those involved value their time immensely, but labor seems to be the scape goat in many circumstances.

surprisingly, the sensors will increase in resolution for the forseable future! but, one of the primary differentiators is the lense and not the sensor. as another post states, medium format film has a lower grain density than 35mm film, though i do not believe that 35mm has the advantage in total resolution. once people become more discerning, they will likely look at color, tonality, contrast, and image sharpness across the sensor/film plane. this is one reason for some photographers preferring certain brands of lenses. i prefer zeiss lenses as opposed to nikon's, since i don't like the contrast in nikon's lenses.

the software is of minor consequence. i can learn new technologies and applications rather quickly, but integrating entire industries takes time. imagine thousands of 500 pages books designed in quark, and imagine how much money was required to design and produce them. so you have half a billion dollars in developmnent, and you are on one publisher. now multiply by five, and you have covered about two-thirds of the publishing sector my business works within. these titles need to be reprinted, modified, updated... when decisions to publish a program revolve around many costs, adding another couple $10k's can squash a project. the printers and separators we work with are very technologically savy, but the process is the point. does intel simply switch fabrication processes? and, why not?
