    and other content creation programs will likely not be made by the open source community. why? because the tools are not used extensively by everybody, they are specialized. look at blender. consumer level apps on the other hand could easily be replaced, and should be. i would love not paying tens of thousands of dollars for licenses, but worrying about that is really short sighted. but, won't steve be pissed if the industry passes him again for linux this time!

    a new tiny format which requires that i buy several thousand new disks... yah, right! a non rewritable medium... what? how about that new half sized cdr? much more useful. this has none of the advantages of md disks, and all of the disadvantages. ttfn datadisc!

    i'm running a g4/400 powerbook, and the performance in osx generally is pretty good. yes, ie renders tables like crap and often chokes--reload page... the os is stable, fast enough, and while the dock as it stands sucks, the ui is pretty darn nice. i'm a graphic designer, and since quark express is programmed by monkeys at typewriters, i don't expect to use it full time for a bit. i really do not like classic! so, when mozilla is finallized, i expect to jump, and expect the response to increase. but, in general the os is very usable. and having used nextstep, and older mac oses, i find the os to be an improvement. also, the tools that do exist for osx are very well done. btw, i switched from windows 2000 on a 450/p3 and the performance is not noticably different.

    we all need a bit of time with certain problems, and i really do not think that this should be any issue for the general student population. most of them aren't going to become programmers, and i do not think that the goal of the university it strictly to create professionals. its to educate and to teach the methods for approaching problems. you work together in an office. you discuss problems which you may not get. the real problem is our focus on grades at all costs, as opposed to learning.

    while it certainly was/is not a pc replacement, the newton was very cool. osx on an ipod like device with that gigawire stuff connecting the juice and display device would be quite nice. Hello apple! oh yah, steve didn't like the newton, but woulda bought palm!?

    high levels of co2 are associated with great ages of biological diversity and large populations of species. we'll just have more pigeons, rats, white-tail deer... we are far from historic levels of co2.

    one can make decent gains with a good managed switch and optimizing the workstations. i'm not really ready to invest in gig-e as of yet, since the internal transfer speeds are so determinent on the result. by the time general pc i/o speeds are up to par, 10gig-e will be the cost of gig-e today. a much better scenario. now, we simply ensure that certain workstations have precedence over the general pc population. hypertransport... yummy!

    Microsoft is currently looking at products like this to create a network-like home computer. There were some articles about this on the Register for those who wish to dig. The question was how it would work since XP Home did not support remote access/multiple users. X windows anybody.

    the NetApp snapshot is actually a bunch of pointers to the storage locations on disk. so, only the memory of the pointer is necessary to retain the information. nice product.

    Maybe I'm drinking the NetApp coolaid, but what is the reliability of IDE drives in these situations? I have a Cobalt NasRaq, which was quite nice, but limited to 60 gigs. And while it has never failed, I would never use it as a primary file server. Anybody have any experience using stuff like this as opposed to the very expensive redundant nas products?

    Islam is the fastest growing culture! You will be assimilated! But seriously, it is the fastest growing culture. And, you per chance are not in a culture influenced by American culture, and as a result those companies which promote what we consider to be American culture. When is the last time you took a road trip and ate in an independant diner. Of course you have to find one first--good luck! No, we Americans would rather pay a buck less for something or be convenient in our purchases and thoughts than actually work. It will get worse...

    Point==You can have you non-governmental space with a lack of infrastructure (witness the broadband situation in England.), and I will gladly pay my way high rate of taxes for good roads, and school systems.... Most of the people *itching about government intervention are actually passing laws subsidizing things like the airline industry. Why not rail? Well, we would be interfering with the publics' desire for air travel!

    they were a worthy competitor, microsoft will be picking itself up, dusting off the scratches and bruises, and moving on to try and win the desktop. it's a tough business and only stronger competitors lay in its future. apple, i guess, is next, or next is apple!??

    flash as a basis of multimedia is a good thing, though not as a basis for a web site. like downloading a pdf (yeah, i know) or a rtf file, flash is a good distribution device. not to mention that connecting to databases is getting easier by the day through flash. xml is really not ready for dynamic content. though i very much agree with the post that states that the plugin only works in two browsers. macromedia, put up or shut up. and, what are you going to do with authorware and director now?
