You killed the Newton and its $100 dollar laptop-like brethren. You refuse to produce a reasonable tablet, in spite of many pros (people willing to spend lots of money for one) wishing that you did. Sketchbook Pro, take a look! 13 inch MacBook Pro without a keyboard... The iPod has improved, but no leaps in functionality have been really made. The MacBooks still don't have a Core 2. I'll buy one, promise! I'll even buy a 13" MacBook Super Pro. The MacPhone is somewhere in the ether; hopefully it will work with the Mac or even better Google Calendar in cool ways.
The world is moving to devices that work together. The only cool thing about the Zune is the wireless, but not for sharing. I want to run web based widgets so that the thing becomes a pocket post-it note. Hell, put a tablet there! Zune isn't getting anywhere IMHO... But Zune 2.0!
My thoughts are that we should have a good public transportation system and make owning a car something of a luxury. With a such a huge number of people without health insurance, making cars affordable is a bit bizarre. We have really done ourselves a diservice by making the automobile such a central component of our society.
We should have been phasing taxes like this in over a couple of decades...
Which came first, a country who gutted it's public transportation system, or long commuting times when using public transportation?
I ditched my car two years ago, with the intention of moving back into the city, and relying upon public transportation. Two thing I have noticed are: when I do drive -- borrow a car -- traffic seems to be getting much, much worse. And secondly, public transportation slows everything down. It takes a hell of a lot longer to live my old life!
Your experiences match with mine, and I have really tried to make accomodations to ensure that I can get things done, But damn, do I miss driving sometimes. I have been considering a "car rental" program to supplement this need. It is very hard in todays society to function without a car, though we have only ourselves to blame. Europe functions much differently on a personal scale.
I donot however miss the car costs, or frankly sitting in traffic. Damn that is stressful.
I have been using iTunes since its inception, and have just signed up for an account to download album art. I have never purchased anything, but use iTunes to burn CDs that I purchase -- fair use -- without any restrictions. I get access to music not available online, and have higher bit rates!
Apple is the least restrictive DRM, and I don't doubt for a minute that they have fought a pretty tough battle against labels wishing for the most draconian of rights.
Isn't it really a matter of time before companies such as Adobe recognize that creating a distribution or partnering, and developing a single application port is more cost effective than a Mac and Windows app? I'm a Mac user and a designer, and have to say that the state of the Mac isn't all that great. Linux is ultimately going to move up scale.
The other aspect of this discussion is tools. Increasingly, they are web based. Aren't we really witnessing the beginning of the end for the all-purpose OS? Most of what I do is not related to an OS. I use tools and communicate. How this is accomplished matters little.
Also, most application interfaces suck beyond comprehension. Adobe's various interfaces don't sync between applications. Others, such as Maya, are so radically different from the underlying OS that it is essentially like running a different OS. So why not create one?
What shoes did "x" character wear on "x" shoe last week. And, where can I get them? A difference, but analogous in the sense that finding lines from shows is pretty difficult, even for those which are pretty well known. I like the profiling aspect you point to, perhaps another target is "real" measurement. If 15% of people watch a certain show, but 25% of the internet is talking about it, which is a more valuable television property?
A bizarrely useful search engine is a complete search engine.
While the uses can't be really discussed as we are just getting around to actually using mobiles in an sense. But, think of this as mobility driven rather than purely mobile. It's personal rather than household driven, meaning that it is your server, not the families. And, imagine that while it may use WiMax on the road, it uses your household service at home.
It's more like a pertable hub than a device. My thoughts on where mobile devices are going is more about a mobile access points with other linked devices, rather than as a mobile phone that does everything. The Nokia 770 really clued me in to this.
How about we give credit to Mr. Berners-Lee and the the little NeXT box that was the base of this network computing! Sun made nice boxes, but isn't the web becoming more about devices? Like the Cobalt machines that they went about eliminating...
This little device changed my perspective on the mobile web. As the owner of a SE P910, I think that the device is trying to do too much. Imagine a small mobile that simply makes calls, but now add a tablet such as this. I can call, access network apps like gmail or the new calendar. Does it play flash slow as hell? Yep! Device makers totally under-estimate the needs of tablets...
I have to admit that the thing is a gimmick today. But real soon, a platform like this will be indespensable. The hundred dollar laptop is here today at $349! Add keyboard... Something like those rollup things I've seen for the MS device would be great. The thing has not crashed on me yet, though as mentioned running Flash is not recommended. I do need to try some Widgets!
The Nokia 770 is essentially what this computing profile becomes. Nothing in it but an OS and general applications. It uses other devices for access (router/cell), and is a web based product in reality. With a 480 by 800 screen it is useful for browsing as opposed to most devices, but lacks a keyboard. Something alomng the lines of the soft keyboard/cases would work great here.
I disagree that such a profile is useless. Couple with something like an education cube dropped in villages it would be perfect. In fact, this is something that I am working on. A wireless acess point/web server with educational content. Add a bunch of $100 dollar laptops and stir.
How many governments ban such a project would be a great indication as to whether they really think it is effective!
How exactly is this different than any other format? If I have a 128 mp3, converting it is likely a "losing" proposition. How is this different than vinyl or cassettes? They have a lifespan. I don't buy music on ITMS for this very reason. I purchase CDs burn them at lossless in iTunes, and get rid of the shell (yes, thief is getting old). I can do whatever I wish with the my file.
A sucker is born every minute, as we can tell by the leadership of this country.
As much as I love the concept of inovation selling itself, the world simply does not work like that. In running a buisness, I have found that there is a reason why good sales people make a fortune. Add strategic vision and you get to become on of the very few people who can build companies.
Steve and Woz were both necessary for Apple to become a success, and I would highly doubt that Steve would argue with this. It's like saying the Beatles would still be the Beatles without John...
I remember a video on NPR about NeXt, where the strategy meetings were taped. Steve gets technology and its application. Woz gets elegant engineering, and has a great understanding of possibilities. The overlap is in the view of technology to do something, but they each understand the result differently.
Corn is an incredibly large consumer of oil resources, both in terms of fertilizer, and farm resources (humans, tractors...). It is not that all corn is this dependent, but the versions we have bread most certainly are.
Additionally, aren't the reasons for ripping more than backing up? Isn't it perfectly leagal to make a low resolution copy of a "record?" This copy can not be used for distribution. IANAL, but Duh!
What happens when your CDs are stolen? Inusurance does not fully reimburse these expenses, as I found out when a couple of hundred left my possession. All of my music is now in iTunes, and the CDs are considered waste. If Apple used 196 or 256 I wouldn't even purchase them any longer.
Sure, it's not here today, but tomorrow! Perhaps...
I think that this is a good thing given where the telcos are going with the paid internet of choice (theirs). Which side would you rather be on? Google's or SBC's?
It gets strange when you ask about Yahoo, but perhaps these companies can work together to create another internet. What version would this one? 2.5 or 0.5?
Increases in gas usage at electrical plants helped a lot! Now that natural gas is flying high, watch for increases in cola fired plants, and the associated by products.
The only scare is that I'd rather not be breathing in all of the particles.
Probably an open virtual machine that allows for all of the oses to run on partitions... I'm sure that Apple would rather have a universal solution of some sort, unless they plan on supporting it.
The one bright spot this holiday season was luxury. Many of the established groups sold very well, some such as Tiffany had very, very good sales. While GM is an example of luxury brands, they very often simply relable products. BMW on the other hand builds from the bottom for luxury/performance, and their sales are also pretty good.
There is a difference between these categories of luxury, as there is between Apple and the general Wintel world, and this is likely to remain. Most people it turns will actually pay for distinction from the masses.
I'm frankly more afraid of the anti-virus software than I am of OS X being compromised! When a "real" threat materializes, I'll have a plan of attack. Until then, it's regular backups!

My goodness tell whoever is hiring you that they're spending more money in wasted freelance time than a new mac would cost!
Netscape! I shudder in horror. 486?

The good ol' Apple II was my first...
The opposite comes to mind... Being able to take advantage of a bunch of Cells to support the mobile device. Imagine a lan party in a server farm.
A hairy Palm!
