I remember Apple kicking out a campaign regarding the megahertz myth to counteract Intels' marketing blitz about their chip crossing the 3.0 GHz barrier, where is that ad again?
how come no one is condemning eolas behavior ? imagine if it was microsoft doing the huffing and puffing here... don't mean to be a microsoft apologist, but geez people.
The idea that Apple only ship problem-free products/software is pure BS. As an example, go visit Apple's own discussion forum and check out the number of problems their latest update (10.4.3) users are experiencing.
Mr Lee broke his employment contract when he decided to join Google, a direct competitor from the fact that he was in charge of the MSN Search team, within one year of his termination with MS.
Simple as that. He who signed a contract should abide by it. A big Google miscalculation, if indeed such a contract exists.
I think one point that is often overlooked in the crusade of eliminating Microsoft from the software landspace (very unlikely, but still worth the thought) is the impact it will have on the US software industry (global perhaps??).
Just blink for a second Microsoft filing chapter 11 tomorrow. How many people will lose their jobs? System integrators? Partners? Businesses that rely on them for support? Home users of ma and pa homes? They have build a co-dependent ecosystems that kept the sofware business afloat in these past couple of years of economic hardship.
Just worth a thought to think a world of tomorrow without Mr Gates.
There is a fine line to walk when one is to criticize or review OSX. OSX has a mach kernel, which from Linus words, is SLOW compared to a monolithic model. Surrounding that SLOW kernel is FreeBSD, which is UNIX. You criticize this layer, you criticize all FreeBDS's installations out there. On top, with the various APIs, you get the nice Quartz/Aqua visual effect that really makes a Mac very different from the other OSs.
But this article is moronic, as if there is nothing that Apple can do wrong. May be this guy needs to hang out in the OSX Forums and take a look if the great great OSX is indeed problem-free, or securely bulletproof? I mean, who is he kidding? I love OSX running on my dual g4 500, but I'm also realistic about running my software update from time to time, just like any Windows users out there.
Just like the article that was published yesterday on/. about a Panther review from the WSJ, perhaps they should stick their nose to 'Wall Street' stuff and let sites like Ars to provide factual review, instead of raving of how great Apple is (we know it is !:)
Thank you.
What about it's good to have an ex VP on your board of directors to help you connect with the right people? Don't mean to minimize Apple's OS effort, but worth a thought...
What's the point of the original poster? Do./ readers find Microsoft such a despicable entity that they need to post such articles to remind people that they also fail? May be it was meant as a joke, but still, very poor taste.
For those who hate them so much (they're a business, they are supposed to make money), don't you think one minute any other company in their shoes would have acted differently, including the envious Sun and over zealous Oracle.
The Gates foundation is today the biggest charitable contributer, funded by the founder himself. Sure, it's a tax relief for him, but he didn't have to do it to help researchers in financial terms in finding vaccin to the most common diseases affecting the 3rd world in the first place. Thats $10 bill available for worthy causes.
Instead, it's hotter nerdy news to point out the failures of Microsoft as a company. Since when did we become so negative about the good things that's happening in this world?
Defensive patents or not, I always find it appauling that people can be so naive when it comes to Apple's intention to dominating the desktop, just as Microsoft, and I have no doubt in my mind that if Apple was in Microsoft position today, that they would have acted in many ways crushing their competitors as well.
You guys seem to be missing his point. He is trying to say that **innovation** in the marketplace out there has been really minimal. I don't think he is denying any incremental refinements that have been achieved up to date.
while gates is now trying to gve money away through the foundation, jobs is finding a way to exploit third world, helping apple's profit
ah, after all, may the msft are not that 'evil' after all. eh?
I remember Apple kicking out a campaign regarding the megahertz myth to counteract Intels' marketing blitz about their chip crossing the 3.0 GHz barrier, where is that ad again?
Even Larry's garage is bigger than Bill's pad!
This is the same iPlanet / Netscape LDAP directory that is so 90s now. It still has this clunky Java UI. Why is this news for nerds?
it took 2years+ to get firefox to version 1.0.
how long it took them to release 1.5?

Sorry, you were saying???
Ask any 10.2 users out there how often updates are being released for them? And how old is 10.2?
1)Crack the OS on the installation disk, so the hacked version is installed. THis is probably the easiest method.
2)Crack the hardware so it lies.
And the fact that they had you by the nuts, so even if you wanted to ask for a raise, you didn't have much to bargain with.

once upon a time, powerpc: one chip to rule them all
now, the cpu is actually 'irrelevant'. it's all about the OS.
sure. talk about a reality distortion field.
didn't steve said the reason that apple made the move to intel was because they would be able to squeeze more performance per watt going forward?
sure, the cpu is 'irrelevant' and it's all about the OS, right?
"Cupertino, start your photocopiers!"
Funny that Apple would put out "Redmond, start your photocopiers" tag when everybody knows what happened to Watson, and now Konfabulator.
What goes around comes around.
Enuff said.
What about some string manipulation numbers?
They were outsourced to Banglore. I'm not surprised. Even machines need to save $$$ !
Just another MSFT nail in the coffin to prove that
1. everybody's got to eat, which means, someone's got to pay
2. going opensource is not for every company.
It's a good day in Redmond.

As a serious question, what were they running before OSX came along (known for its stunning UI and yet give its users access to the CLI) ?

Point well taken.

Oh really? I bet you would apply that same logic if it was up to Microsoft to try patent this idea ...

USA TODAY: Is there a scenario by which you would at some point consider porting Microsoft applications into Linux?
BG: fsck u!
When Microsoft released XP over Win2K, everybody booed like ducks with the words "WinXP is Win2K with extra eye candy" kinda thing.
But when Apple releases 10.3 over 10.2, it's all these things and much more !
I'm sure Apple also innovated the fast user switch feature. Just eye candy I hear.
