    Anyone who is a ./ reader can attest to the fact that when Safari was first release as a beta browser, a lot of people came out to proclaim the superiority of Safari over IE5, which is true. So now MS is announcing no more IE upgrades, except for security fixes, and there you go again all bark like little puppets with no milk. It's not like there is a browser shortage anyway on OSX. It's their product, and if they don't want to support it, that's their money. If you don't like it, go write your own, and this is what Apple did with Safari.

    Please, do me a favor and go kiss Jobs ass. Enough of this "my OS is better than yours". When MSFT releases security updates, you probably complain. When they don't on time, you probably complain too. But when APPL releases its updates 2 weeks later, it's all praise. Squeeze those cheeks real hard.

    I am just amazed how you are all so naive to believe that companies like Sun and IBM invest in Linux because of good intentions. Of course Sun will tackle Linux if they can help themselves selling for Solaris. Why is that so surprising ?

    Excuse me, but what is more profitable thing for MSFT to do ? Further development of DirectX that they are planning to imbed in further Windows OS and XBox or OpenGL ?

    It might not suit your need, but it suit theirs. Go start your own company.

    What I'd like to hear from you though, is what would be the alternative criteria that is workable today with the existing infrastructure, that will allow the govt to operate more efficient when it comes to the prevention doctrine ?

    That is until AAPL turns around [after having benefited immensely from OS], and crank up a square log from the behind.

    I have no doutb that AAPL has contributed its fair share to the OS community, but most of their open work is mostly GUI-less, which is pretty much useless on a Mac. I mean, who in their right mind will install Darwin without Aqua on top ? (I know, there are people out there who does it, but I'm referring to the masses here). What is webcore without the nice GUI? Apple could have easily OS the GUI in exchange for all the hardwork done by the webcore developers. Ask yourself why that was not the case? At least you know where you stand with IBM and MS when it comes to sharing.

    Is there anything that Microsoft will ever do that will please this community at large ? This is a first, where people complain because some commercial entity has released a competitive product to MPEG 4 at a lower price. What if Microsoft priced their MWA license higher that the MPEG4 dudes? Will that be OK ? I bet people would have complained that Microsoft is charging too much and can do so because of their internet and browser dominance for multi media content.

    Bottom line is whatever Microsoft attempts to do, the slashdot community will always have something negative to say. Why bother posting any article about them if it's always the same biased one sided view where Microsoft is evil.

    And what about Netscape, huh ? Netscape was run by a bunch of really smart engineers, engineers who did not know unfortunately how to run an already successful business to the next level.

    All these reports about X being cheaper than Y are just pure shallow journalism at its best. It's great marketing to attract readers (don't we just love those comparisons), but are of very little value in content. Most people and corporations have no real problem, and are willing to pay a little bit more for something that does what they want 120%.

    Think about it.

    Why do APPL care if a third party supplies software that allows their users to save iDVD projects to an external drive ? I am sure there are plenty of Mac users out there with no superdrive access. It's just beyond me, and makes me wonder what's is at stake here ? A way to sell more hardware or a really IP issue ...?

    it just hurts my eyes to see the hypocrisy that exists here about AOL. just because AOL is using Gecko makes them suddenly lose the propriety behemoth that they are. i wonder what would have been the reaction should it have been Microsoft who had decided to use Gecko.

    Just like the choice you claim to have with Apple as a Mac user, when Apple decided to release their DVD player on OSX, they could have cared less for their loyal ysers with hardware decoder. What choice did these consumers have when they paid good money for their hardware?

    And before you jump, I have a dual g4 system. I know what choices I have. At least with apple. So why do I own one? LinuxPPC. Thank you.

    And by the way, with all the die hard macheads coming out of their holes with their overly protective view of The Mac (TM) always looking down on the PC user, people should go take a look at Apple discussion forums and see people complain.

    Don't talk about choice when the typical mac user don't even have 1/10th of the choice a PC user do. Get the fact straight. Stop being a Macdroide. Jobs is giving no discount.

    The article seems to be focused on hardware. Rather, it should have been on future applications taking advantage of these new and powerful hardware/interfaces.

    People want stuff that they can use everyday. Having a PC with software that uses voice recognition and learn my pattern usage is what I really want. I don't want to have to mess around anymore with DLLs, the registry, LD_LIRBARY_PATHs or .conf files. Applications should learn on how to adapt to my usage and fix themselves when broken. How about an instantaneous boot up people. My g4 with osx wakes up in 5 secs. Boots under 2 mins.

    The idea of HyperThreading will create a new breed of applications, both on the client and server side hopefully. The hope of having a reatime application on my desktop is very appealing. No more me waiting for the application to respond to my command!!!

    Very well said. They have indeed spend many dollars in marketing that name and for someone to come in and piggyback on their name is, well, not fair. Let a database competitor that only run on Linux to come up with the name Loracle and see what Oracle does. MS has a solid case and I have no doubt they will prevail.

    The guys there should have picked something like Winux. After all, it's running windows on linux. Not the other way round.

    I think this number (0.24%, which is ridiculously low IMHO) is to be taken with a grain of salt. But on the flip side of the coin, I think it's quite clear that Linux is not taking over the desktop by storm any time soon.

    For most of the /.'s, Linux couldn't be more perfect as a computing platform. Freedom to do anything you want. But for the common mortals, Linux is just too much of a hassle to install in the first place.

    I'm writing this with netscape4.77 with Zoot updated kernel 2.2.20 -- not bad :)

    Dude, msn.com is a commercial website. As such, the owners (MSFT) have the right to enforce poeple to use whatever software they please if people want to browse their site. If you don't like it, then go somewhere else. There are enough portals out there that it sounds really pathetic on your part to come on here and start with the Microsoft bashing. Quit whining. Grow up.

    but i was telneting to different webservers and found out by accident that netscape.fr is actually an IIS4.0 webserver. telnet to port 80 and to a GET / HTTP/1.0 and see for yourself ... very amusing.
