Amazon pretty much has every book which has ever contained an ISBN number in their database. Via the Amazon API it pretty much becomes the IMDB of books. Combine it with http://www.listal.com/ and you can really start to kick ass.
Yes, he does deserve what happened to him because he lacked confidence and is socially inept. Lack of confidence and ineptitude are BAD qualities in a person and should be discouraged. I have no respect or pity for people with no will power. And I despise those who are proud of these qualities.
I do not believe that his problems come from the actions of other people. His problems came only from within himself. If they had attempted to bully me, I would not have gotten upset because my attitude on life is different. The difference here is the attitude of the victim not the actions of the provocateurs. Even if he was never bullied this kid would not be happy because of his internal problems, which are his own fault.
If you don't want fame, that's fine. There are still ways to make the most of the situation without becoming a depressed slob. Just have a good laugh at yourself and move on. There are ways to go about it without becoming famous or depressed. Just act proud to be the Star Wars kid instead of acting ashamed. That's all you need to do.
Yeah, I was bullied a bit when I was much younger as well. Apparently so were many others here. Looking back with 20/20 hindsight I can only wish something like this had happened to me then. I can only wish that the me now could have whipped the old me into shape sooner. I realize now that I brought bullying upon myself as much as, if not more than, it was brought upon me. The sooner people learn that lesson, the better.
Non-physical bullying is AOK in my book. Freedom of speech extends all the way up to me being allowed to point at, and make fun of, whoever you want for whatever reason you want. If people who are made fun of are socially deficient, then they will react poorly to this. That attitude only attracts more pestering. People have a right to pester you as long as they don't infringe on your civil liberties. If you are unhappy with your situation, you only have yourself to blame.
Star Wars kid has only himself to blame for his unhappiness. It's a disgrace that some kids have to pay a fortune in money to him for just acting within their rights as kids. When I suggest that Star Wars kid should have sued I meant it as an intellectual property lawsuit, not as an emotional distress suit. If I had my way you would not be able to sue someone else for your own emotional problems. Otherwise I'd be able to sue Bill Gates. His monopoly makes me sad:( See how silly it is?
This is bs. If Star Wars kid in unhpapy, then that is entirely the fault of his attitude. You can't blame someone else because of your personal problems. If he would have chosen to bask in his fame, and accept his fate, then he would be happy. He could have appeared on television, done interviews, made lots of money, etc. if only he was proud of being Star Wars kid instead of ashamed. But because he chose to be a timid dweeb he got what he deserved. He should be thanking those kids for giving him an opportunity to be famous, not suing them.
Of course, if he was really smart he would sue AND become famous and happy.
I haven't used the Microsoft product yet, but I signed up with GMail for domains a week or so ago. As someone who has been using Thunderbird / IMAP for years I can say I'm not going back unless they make me. However, I do wish I could get the GMail notifier to work with GMail for domains. I need to be notified if a computer e-mails me when something is wrong!
It is difficult for most people to ascertain the tone of written communication due to their poor reading skills and the poor writing skills of the sender. Idiots need to go back to elementary school to learn something about grammar.
I would quit over a great many things. Thankfully, none of them have happened at my current job yet. But if they did I would look for a new job while still continuing to work. Then quit and let them know why. Always find a new job before quitting your current one. Keeping food in the stomach and rent paid is priority #1.
It's always been my experience when using wine that wine performs better than Windows. Except of course for when wine doesn't work. So when it works, it works better, but it doesn't work nearly often enough. Notepad works though. Once you use notepad in wine you'll never go back.
Even worse than standby mode are electronics that consume electricity when turned completely off. If you have a television that is off, but it still plugged in, it uses electricity! How else would the remote control turn it on if it did not? This is true for very many devices. The only way to stop them is to unplug them. It really sucks.
I don't look for a technical writer, I look for technical writing. If you wanted to pimp your technical writing skills to me you should write some excellent documentation for various open source projects. Then just add a little note that you wrote the documentation and will write more for money. If you do this for the right projects, i.e: those which very desperately need good documentation, you might really make a hit. That's of course assuming you write very good stuff.
Another good thing to do is write lots of HOWTO: type stuff on a blog somewhere and get your stuff up on digg and slashdot every week. Someone who needs writing will be sure to notice.
I have 2 Happy Hacking Keyboards. One at home and one at work. At first I got it thinking it might be cool and worth a shot. Now I swear by it.
However, my problem is that I DID use the numpad and want to use it again. It's really hard to play any Civilization games without it. Anyone know where I can get a really thin, practical USB numpad?
Linux runs on iPod. Linux runs on PPC, x86, 64-bit, arm, SPARC and more. Windows runs on... x86. Minimum requirements for XP > minimum requirements for Linux. The end.
The arcade IS dead. It's sad really. You should see some of the incredibly awesome arcacde games they get in Japan. It's just not fair. But the way he puts down DDR shows just how much of a nut this guy is. DDR was the last chance to SAVE the US arcade, not the final nail in the coffin.
What I wouldn't give to bring the arcade back to life...
Why do users need to change file permissions? If people are sharing files then they should all be in the same group. Then all the files should have the group ownership set already. If they are managing their own files then they should be in their home folders with user ownership. If the system is setup correctly then users should never have to chown or chmod anything. If you think they do, then you have a problem elsewhere. Don't give anyone root but root. And if possible, don't even give root root. Trust noone.
Yup, the in-ear headphones definitely solve this problem. You can keep the volume really low and still hear the music if a loud thing is nearby. I have the etymotic 6i in-ear phones and they were worth every penny despite being very expensive. I used to keep the volume at like 70% now more at 30% or 40%. Hearing saved.
Sure, I don't think EULA's actually should carry legal weight. But you know what, I don't care either way. The problem here is that we haven't 100% decided if they are or are not legally binding contracts.
If they aren't, we win.
If they are, we also win. Nobody reads the damn things. We can just start putting EULAs on software that have outrageous things like agreeing to give money, technology, property, sexual favors and other things to the developers (us).
It doesn't matter which way, as long as they pick a way and stick with it.
I don't have a really good story of a particular exam. But I do remember multiple exams where I finished very very early. Especially if the exam was multiple choice I would finish long before everyone else. I was sometimes wary of handing it in right away, thinking perhaps I missed a page or something, but no. I simply finished really quickly while other people were toiling.
I admit my grades weren't perfect, but I've got a degree and a job. Let that be a lesson to you kids still in school. You're probably putting in too much effort.
I'm just going from personal experience, so this has no basis in medicine. But when I compute or play video games or whatnot there are two things that really get my wrist hurting.
One, if I play a 6-button arcade fighting game like street fighter and I use my wrist to bring my whole hand up and down on the buttons. I'm basically swinging my wrist back and forth very rapidly. I should be just moving my fingers around.
Two, I learned not to do this, but improper mousing. When you use a computer mouse you should move your whole arm and your wrist should not bend. Watch people and yourself and you will notice that they make the wrist the only joint that is used to move the computer mouse. Not good. Luckily I'm on my way to beating this bad habit. Move your whole arm to move the mouse.
Sorry, you're wrong. It IS the customer's fault. They are too dumb to realize that in order to get HDTV you need to get digital cable and watch certain channels. A lot of them also fuck up their AV wiring and don't use the component or HDMI cables necessary to get things really working properly.
Seriously, this is the kind of shit we need to teach in schools that we aren't. Setting up standard A/V equipment is a skill people need to have, and only geeky people ever learn it properly. I can't tell you how many times people in the office need an IT person to setup the conference room projector for them.
If you want to blame the service providers blame them for not properly educating the customers. But I blame the user for being ignorant.
There was actually another study recently, don't know how good it was, that showed that people couldn't tell which TVs were HD and which ones were not. Someone should test that a bit more and see if it's because of bad eyesight or whatever.
Ebert was mostly right. His only problem was in his over generalisation. There are indeed games that I would consider great works of art. And the fact is that 99.9% of games are complete shit. Maybe you can call them art, but only if you recognize they are bad. I've played quite a few games in my time. I've had joystick firmly in hand since the Atari 2600. There have been many games I've enjoyed over the years, but very few I can consider good works of art. In the past two years I can only name Katamari Damacy, and it doesn't even have a story. That's one out of thousands.
Ebert seemed to imply that no existing games were art, which is wrong. The correct statement is that most games are terrible art.
Disagree? Make a list of which games you would put in a museum and hang them on the wall for people to play hundreds of years from now. Divide by the number of games that exist. I rest my case.
Why not? The fist amendment says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..." It doesn't say anything about disrespecting a religion. And in no way does this college course prohibit the free exercise of religion. If you want to interpret the word respect to have a meaning synonymous with "pertaining to" then you have to get rid of the laws giving tax breaks to religious groups.
Now, as far as the others are concerned. If someone were to make a class named "Jews: The Secret Rules of the World" or "Why blacks should be slaves again" I wouldn't like it very much. It would be pretty obvious that the professor was a racist bastard and should be fired under the policies of the university. But, as a supporter of the first amendment I have to accept and allow this sort of hate speech no matter how distasteful it might be.
Advertising is ok as long as I don't notice it. Or even better when it makes sense and has no effect. For a good example look at the Ninja Turtles game and Pizza Hut. Makes perfect sense. If you're playing a game and the burger joint is named Merv's Burgers (smiles are free) it's cool, but McDonald's makese sense.
Despite my dislike of McDs I really wouldn't mind this sort of advertising. I don't notice it, it doesn't feel like advertising and it has no effect. It has the added bonus of giving the game developers more money. I am in favor of random companies paying game developers to make their games more genuine by including real world items and getting nothing in return for it other than the illusion that it is somehow helping their sales.
I don't like MMOs, at least not existing ones. And I don't like Star Trek. Spare me the pain of many many articles talking about something I couldn't care less about.
If you are trying to make something where performance is important, like a 3d game, then manage memory yourself. If you are making a simple business application where reliability and security are important, use garbage collection. If your program uses lots of RAM and you need every last drop either find an expert at RAM management to get every last bit or use garbage collection if your programmers are not so awesome.

GIMP is enough for me, but I barely do image editing. I mostly just crop and resize photos and make simple images for web sites.

It depends on what you are trying to make, duh.
If you are trying to make something where performance is important, like a 3d game, then manage memory yourself.
