  1. Nobody on Is It Wrong to Love Microsoft? · · Score: 1

Nobody can tell me that Linux sucks if they haven't given Ubuntu a serious chance. The problem we have is that people try some random distribution for 5 minutes and it's either too hard to install (Gentoo/Debian) or it sucks (Fedora,Mandriva). Then they make a sweeping judgement of all Linux.

The reason people who know about comptuers hate MS and like Linux is because they are smart enough to realize this. They are also so nerdy that they use their computer differently from normal folk. And for those nerdy uses Windows often fails miserably and Linux exceeds.

Anyone out there who is a Linux hater because you tried Red Hat a few years ago and it didn't work with your hardware, try an Ubuntu LiveCD today and see if you change your mind.

Also, I'm beginnign to think that /. is purposefully posting these flamebait articles on purpose to get lots of posts to make up for when the moderation system was broken. Anyone else think that?

As long as you are intelligent you realize that forum is moderated with bias and should be taken with heavy salt.

I've had a lot of cases and computers in my day. And the best thing for getting a quieter computer is bigger fans. Bigger fans have to spin at less rpms to push the same amount of air as a smaller fan. Less rpms means less noise.

The real key here is not to go crazy with the cooling/overclocking. Giant heat sinks with crazy fast fans are loud as all hell. And often the default fan that comes with the CPU is sufficient.

If you want more cooling than you need for overclocking the only real way to stay quiet is water cooling.

But my recommendation is always to just run hardware at speed, default cpu fan, big intake and big exhaust fan running at lowest speed. You wont even know it's there.

Web surfing doesn't really destroy my productivity. I write software for a living. I work from 9-5 every day. I can't really write code straight from 9-5 with a lunch break. It can't be done. I get most of my work done early in the day, then my rate of work slows down. Every once in awhile while I'm thinking I'll hit the news and other sites. I don't do a lot of e-mail, but I do a lot of IM.

Basically, I do as much work as I can in a day. If there wasn't the web and such to occupy time I would be twiddling thumbs or reading a book in that other time.

If I had a job that was just 9-1 every day I would get the same amount of work done since that time would be solid full productivity work. I would also be much happier with that kind of schedule. But nobody is willing to pay me the same amount to work 9-1 even though the result of my work would be nearly identical to me working 9-5. Four hours every day wasted. Hurts me more than it hurts the company.

This would explain teh failure of the switch campaign-- people think Apples are just another form of PC like Dell, and why would you care? They just buy what the salesman at the local store tells them to buy.

I could see why you would think that, but I've never seen an example. Every "mainstream" person I've ever met recognizes that the Mac is something different. And that is the reason they don't switch. It's the number one reason that a lot of things just suck. People resist change. People take the path of least resistance and resist change fiercely. Often they will resist change with more effort than it would have taken to change in the first place. Also often they will resist change, no matter how obviously beneficial it will be to themselves and others. If people thought Apple was "just another form of PC" you would see big sales from mainstream people because it's way sexier than a Dell. The reason sales aren't huge is because they recognize it is different and they resist change.

  24. Cost of switching on Desktop Linux Mass Migration · · Score: 1

There is a great initial cost of switching. This cost is pretty much the only thing that keeps companies away. Except for companies that don't have some application that is windows only and wont run in citrix/wine/other.

But we live in a world where the short term is more important. People want stuff now. Pro-active you say? Bah, only reactive is good for me.

The real question I want to know is why brand new companies don't use something other than windows? I mean, you have nothing to port over. No existing applications that need to run on a different platform. And if you're a new company that means you probably have a pool of startup money you want to be very frugal with. Forget about existing companies, they are hopeless. The new companies are where it's at.
