it is about the codebase. Learning the language takes a week if you are going by a book and a day or 2 if you have actual working code to learn from. However, learning a codebase takes months/years.
I have been occasionally tempted to click on an ad - especially when it was showing me the product I wanted to buy. However when I click those ads, I have to do a lot of work to purchase the product and I dont want to work that hard. It seems that ads are only there to get me to go to the site and spend 10-15minutes figuring out their e-commerce stuff. What a really effective ad would do is market a sale and link directly to the list of products that are being sold. I dont click an ad to go visit a site and explore it. I click an ad because it has shown me what I want to buy. If I have to spend a bunch of time to search out the product on the website that the ad referred to, then I leave and dont bother clicking any more ads.
You honestly think that there are no US friendly computer experts probing the chinese systems with the intent to discover what the Chinese know and selling that information to the US?
The hardest thing about working from home is trying to explain to family and friends that you are trying to work. When they know you are at home, then tend to treat is as if your on vacation, and its ok to call and small talk or pop-in.
And this is different from your co-workers popping by your cubicle how exactly?
That's what I love about computing. A problem that has been around for years and years becomes a new dangerous threat simply because the developers of new technology didnt know about it before.
Eapps.com has plans starting at $10 USD a month. What you get is a VPS, with CentOS as the OS. You have root access, and so have full control. They are pretty quick on the Customer Service side, but its rare that you need Customer Service.
In my experience you never see the end of development. There are always more features to be added. The real strength of agile development is that it recognizes this and breaks up the development into small manageable changes, instead of trying to ignore the feature requests. The personal story that Joel mentions (the problems IE7 created for his Copilot software) has more to do with the fact that he has only one person responsible for the whole project rather than a specific methodology. Not knocking the decision (cuz well, his resume is a lot stronger than mine), but no methodology will solve a resource shortage problem.
I may be wrong here, but I the thing that makes this asyncronous is the XMLHttpRequest object, which needs to have the returning data be well-formed XML.
Its always nice to know that you can depend on death, taxes and people who read slashdot still dont read the articles before they post...
The data that the authors of the articles collected seems to indicate that using either the standard waterfall technique (with its heavy dependence on specs) and using newer methods (what they call sync-and-stabilize referring to the heavier dependence on building product and having that product used by the users) result in the same level of bugs, and the same level of developer efficiency. The real interesting part of the whole article is that it seems that the Japanese are doing something truly innovative as they have bug levels that are a scale of magnitude smaller than everywhere else!
The states is very business friendly. IT is very business friendly. What other industry has replication costs of nearly free? Plus it is very easy to start an IT business. I am sure most slashdotters have enough hardware to create an environment that can be used to develop and test small applications. Invest some cash into consulting a lawyer, get an accountant and either learn to market yourself or get that buddy who always is seeming to go to parties to be your marketing. If it doesnt succeed, you can at least start applying for those sweet CEO jobs!
Maybe I am missing something, but where in this example does it indicate that this person has a certification?
In addition, I am doubting the wisdom of posting the text of an email that specifically states "This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual named. If you are not the named addressee you should not disseminate, distribute or copy this e-mail" to slashdot as I dont see any reference to slashdot.org in the "to" field.
He answers to one question: And we know that we will never be able to get rid of every vulnerability. Anyone who says the opposite is not living on this planet.
then 2 questions later he says: We have the people, processes and technology in place to get to zero (security vulnerabilities)
so am I reading this wrong or is he contradicting himself?

I might not understand business, but I do understand innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Seems a lot of people have forgotten that one.
Now I can find the one with the finger in it without having to open them all!

Because if they havent done that, nothing is stopping them from signing on when they get successful.
