Hundreds of dollars? I can buy a digital camera with similar capabilities from Wal-Mart for about $20. I can hook it up to a PC for downloading and erasing pictures as many times as I want. They are probably selling these at or a little above cost.

The company was just betting on reselling the camera over and over again. Each additional time a camera is returned, it's pure profit. I haven't priced digital to print services to know whether they were gouging the consumer there too.

If a rumor that a party was going to be a beauty pagent caused this to happen, the real thing, even if it was virtual, would probably do the same thing.

Linux usually isn't, you often have to mess with things a lot.

That depends on what it is. With many of the newer distros, plugging in a camera or any other USB device that uses the mass storage interface is as easy to use as it would be with Windows. Now if it's some new dohicky that the manufacturer has supplied Windows drivers for, but hasn't released any sort of documentation for anything else (like Creative's Jukeboxes because they have their own DRM), then it will take a while.

It's not any different than NASA's, the Russian's or the ESA's unmanned launchers. The shuttle practically has to be torn down and rebuilt after every shuttle landing now which isn't cheap. Yeah, but when given the choice, what are many of the troops in Iraq using, M4 or AK-47? Why? Ammunition is plentiful, it's more reliable in rugged conditions, better knockdown power, etc. Sure, it's not as accurate, but this isn't long distance fighting. Plus, they don't have to clean it religiously to make sure it works. Which is always the followup whenever anyone is discussing M16 reliability: you won't have any problems if you clean it every day. It is a light, accurate, versatile weapon that you can attatch lots of different stuff to it. You won't find many people who will dispute that. It's too bad you have to clean it every day to make sure it won't cost you your life.
