Firstly, a CGI program is far easier to develop in Perl; there are standard modules for just about everything, CGI interfacing, database access, socket programming, just about everything a CGI program needs. Its fantastic regexp support is also a great boon, Perls implementation of regexps beats every other serious language hands down.
Secondly it is extremely quick to develop CGI apps in Perl. The lack of a compilation step cuts down the development cycle and there are hundreds of free scripts you can cut 'n' paste from.
Thirdly, Perl's garbage collection means you don't need to worry about memory leaks from your million hit per day CGI programs.
Fourthly, when running under mod_perl it is very very very very very very speedy, especially compared to standard CGI scripts. A mod_perl script wil beat, hands down almost any C program that uses standard CGI. Of course, C programs can be written to use the Apache API, but I would rather use 'use Apache::Registry' than try and navigate a large and complicated API.
Finally it is a very portable language, almost all programs are portable across Linux/BSD/Solaris/NT/Unicos etc with very very small changes. As soon as you start using any high level functions in C you soon get bogged down in #ifdefs. These are nasty:)
On the other hand, I can see this benefiting the MB manufacturer, because a free copy of Linux adds far more value than Yet Another AOL CD(tm). Two identically featured MBs, similar price, but one comes with a free Linux CD? Which would you buy?

I did a little math, and I hope the numbers aren't totally off here... The Space Shuttle, accelerating at about 3gs, takes about 50 seconds to reach 600 miles per hour. The SSMEs (Space Shuttle Main Engines) consume over 1,000 lbs of fuel each second, so by getting rid of that first 50 seconds worth of fuel, you can put an extra 50,000lbs of cargo into orbit.
Ah, but those 55,000lb of fuel are partly used to put the 55,000lb of fuel in the air as it is. It is also burnt up before the space shuttle exits the atmosphere. If that 55,000lb of fuel was cargo then the shuttle would be carrying 55,000lb extra for the entirity of its journey, not just the first 60 seconds, so the actual amount extra that the Space Shuttle could carry would be considerably lower.
These numbers apply to the Space Shuttle itself, which is only rated to carry 55,000 lbs of cargo in any case, so think about how important that first 600mph is first and imagine what it could do for a spacecraft designed to take advantage of it. In the case of the Space Shuttle, it would theoretically double the cargo weight capacity (if there were only enough volume to take advantage of that).
Using magnetic assist is an excellent idea. I would like to see the day when a launching track goes up the side of Mt. Kilimanjaro and can toss cargo and ships into orbit almost unassisted.
I wonder how the Tanzanians would react to this:), why not somewhere in te alps of the rockies instead;-)
Well, when you consider that 129 on the list is a 400 node 500MHz alplha cluster, I don't think you would find numbers low enough to represent the average desktop PC:)
Welcome to the official homepage of the Edinbugh Military tattoo. Amongst the fabulous gothic architecture of Edinburgh Castle, a single bugle call rang out, it pierced the hearts of many of the emotional crowd. Suddenly, a band started up and the anarchy in the crowd disappered as all ears turned to listen to the marthing band.
Ok, so I was stretching it a bit there, but you get the point.
With more and more stories in the mainstream "News" about the actions of so called hackers, hackers in general are being dragged through the mud. If this happened to any other cultural group there would be hell to pay. My suggestion is that a group of hackers of unquestionable credentials (so no one has any right to challenge their claim to be a hacker), RM, ESR etc would do nicely. Then file a big fuckoff lawsuit against all the companies (ZD, Kipling for example) who have misused the term hacker.
Think of the reaction if a paper ran a headline like "Homosexuals rape more young boys" or "The person responsible for the attack was black, black people go round beating other people up"; lawsuit city. Note that these are just to be taken as random examples of other minority groups and nothing is to be read into them.
Looking at the press release, it states that IBM will be optimising DB2 for "TurboLinux", not Linux, "TurboLinux". Is this an oversight, a typo, or is it the start of companies targetting specific distributions and the beginning of the fragmentation of the linux market.
If Jews and Romany in Europe had owned guns, do you really think the Nazis could have had such an easy time wiping them out?
Umm, the Jews and Romanys were not being attacked by some sort of redneck gang or even an unruly militia. They were rounded up in probably one of the most efficient and well planned military operation by the best disciplined army ever to walk the earth. Grampa jew owning a shotgun would not have helped them, if anything it would have made that family's suffering worse. Even some sort of united militia would not have lasted 10 days against an army that conquered Poland/Belgium/Holland in a matter of weeks (they are on a map, go look it up).
The ignorance of many Americans (by no means all though) to European history and politics is amazing (see their attitude towards the current troubles in Northern Ireland). The Internet would be a nicer place for everyone if you would keep your mouth shut about things you knew nothing about.
Why does it seem like 1998 was Linux's banner year and 1999 is the year everyone switched back to Win? In 1998 we got The Gimp, KDE, and Gnome, Enlightenment, Kernel 2.2, the NetWinder, Mozilla, Mnemonic, really groundbreaking ventures. In 1999, what have we gotten to parallel The Gimp? The NetWinder was a flop. Mozilla was a flop. Mnemonic vaporized. We got a few games but those quickly wore off. Meanwhile all these new multimedia formats came out only for Windows.
In 1999 we got 2.2 (it came out late Jan IIRC), piles of proper companies supporting us, an enterprise class JFS, Gnome/KDE will become more and more standard, Mozilla proper will be released, Q3/Civ CTP the first commercial games EVER to be released (on linux) in parallel to the Windows versions and/. passed the 100 million hit mark, what more do you want:)
What's "idiotic" about using the world's de facto document format? You may not like the fact that Microsoft Office is the de facto standard, but that doesn't mean it isn't so.
Firstly, MS Office is not a standard, standards are properly documented open formats that are usualy (but not always) well thought out, sensible and portable. HTML, XML, ASCII text, TeX, Ansi C, HTTP and XPM are all "standards", a crappy, proprietary, backwards and forwards incompatible, binary document format is not a standard.
Why can't I buy or download a WYSIWYG word processor for Windows or Linux that has a nice open standard (like TeX), it would be so much nicer (and more refreshing) than these crap formats in word/wordperfect/*office etc.
Likewise, I bought it not knowing a thing about perl and a couple of months later I have just written a DB backed messageboard thing (much like/. but strangely different, and less boxy). If you have experience with C and learn best through jumping in off the deep end, or have godd perl knowledge and want a reference book, this is for you.
WHy can't slashdot readers (or the majority of them) accept that he has made an apology and get on with life. He had nothing to gain by saying what he initially was quoted as saying (except a lot of bad press) so now he has retracted the statements and apologised can't we just have a big hug and get on wih life?
I found this on a messageboard, here by General Lee D. Mented, it is pretty good:
> I'm a hardware research engineer from Acer Inc. (Singapore)
Do we have any proof of this? No.
> K7 test machines CPU K7 600MHz (FSB 200MHz x 3.0) 600MHz 128KB L1 Cache > 2-way associative 200MHz 512KB L2 Cache 4-way associative EV6 BUS > Controller L2 Cache Speed 1/3 FSB
Everyone on this message board has mentioned this part spec dozens of times, this could easily be expected.
>RAM TI Direct RDRAM 256MB at 600MHz
I believe Intel RDRAM spec is twin concurrent 16bit busses at 800mhz, not 600mhz. This would support the claims of 3.2GB/sec and multiples thereof with interleaving. Also, Sony has speced their PSX2 as having an 800mhz RDRAM bus. Nintendo RDRAM runs at 433mhz. I don't know of anyone making 600mhz rdram because nobody apparently intends to use it. I believe this is fake.
The card's been announced, everyone who read the press release saw it and full specs.
> Harddisk IBM Ultra3 SCSI 6ms 10.0 GB
Nobody makes a SCSI HD in 10.0GB. They're all multiples of 2.255GB. 4.55, 9.1, 18.2, 36.4 are all currently shipping capacities. I don't believe IBM has shown a U3W prototype yet, only Quantum has that I'm aware of. Also, there is no controller listed in this spec, and I haven't yet seen any manufacturer talking about and upcoming U3W controller for anytime this year. Not believable.
Chip names but no numbers. I believe the names were on AMD presentations or discussed at comp shows or shown on roadmaps. We obviously expect AGP 4x. Intel has not even finalized the USB 2.0 spec yet, so support for this in an already existing chipset is nonsense.
> OS-Windows 2000 Beta 3 WinHEC April 99 Release
Nobody in their right mind would run benchmark comparisons on a beta OS.
> P-III test machines CPU Pentium III Coppermine 600MHz (FSB 133MHzx4.5) > 600MHz 32KB L1 Cache 4-way associative 600MHz 256KB L2 Cache on-die 4-way > associative
We all expect this part eventually. Nothing new in the specs for it.
Chip numbers for this can probably be easily extrapolated from current intel partnumbers. We've been hearing for weeks about delays in the "intel 820" chipset. We know it will support agp4x and ata66 (not that anyone cares about ata66). I'm very confident it will NOT support USB 2.0 as intel has announced that will be coming up for early 2000.
> WinBench99 Version 1.1 ( 5 times measure ) CPUMark99 (CPU Integer > Performance Not include MMX register) - K7@600MHz 68.4 Mark - Pentium > III@600MHz 70.1 Mark
This is quite likely made up. The scores on the PIII which could be considered a "known" are way off from projections from standard clocks and results from overclocked systems. Sorry, this is most likely numbers drawn out of a hat and adjusted to make the K7 look bad.
> FPUWinMark( CPU Floating Point Performance Not Include > MMX,SSE,3DNow!,FSTORE Extendtion register ) - K7@600MHz 2,819 Mark - > Pentium III@600MHz 3,104 Mark
Again, probably random numbers.
Now I have to ask, how many people on here would not know where to find the press releases, product roadmaps, and rumored info to construct this kind of sham? The accuracy of the description is the only thing that makes it believable to any of us. The more you actually know about this upcoming hardware, the easier it is to fake, because you can get the audience's confidence with known facts and then slip the lies in at the end.
4040/4004 we will call 0th gen 8080, 8086, 80186 are all 1st gen 80286 is second gen 80386 is 3rd gen 80486 is 4th gen Pentium is 5th gen Pentium Pro is 6th gen Pentium II is 6th gen (PPro with slow cache and MMX) Pentium II Xeon is 6th gen (P2 with fast cache) Pentium III is 6th gen (P2 with SSE) Pentium III Xeon is 6th gen (P3 with fast cache)
intel have not released a new architecture since the PPro god knows how long ago. The K7 is 7th gen.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people! I wish that everyone would get off the gun kick and put the blame where it lies: on the psychos that buy them and use them to kill people.
To paraphrase Eddie Izzard (British Comedy Genius) on his Us tour - but the gun helps a bit.
If its psychos buying guns that is the problem then don't sell guns to psychos, require strict controls on gun issueing, don't sell any automatic weapons, don't sell any guns at all..
I know that last statement is likely to provoke a horde of "but criminals can get guns anyway" responses, well how many of the guns used in crime are stolen from their proper owners or bought legitamately. My guess is only a tiny fraction were imported illegally.
Face it, while guns and local militia were a good idea 200 years ago (round constitution time) it makes no sense whatsoever to allow just anyone to own a gun in the 21st century. Allow some good to come out of this horrific incidant by foring the government to tighten up gun controls, as happened after the massacre in Tasmania and the killings in Dunblane in Scotland.
I saw a much cooler handhald keyboard than this in a PC mag once, IIRC it was available for Psions and PCs and it comprised 5 switches in a thing you gripped in your hand, you made the letters using different combinations of buttons. The cool thing was you never had to move your fingers, so touch typing was a no-brainer.
I will try and dig out a picture or URL or summat.
Is it just me or does anyone els e think that the new NIC should be:
A) Totally non-profit B) Totally devoid of lawyers C) Clueful
Then after the current batch of registrations runs out they should take all.ORGs away from profitable companies (unfortunately that includes/.) and all.NETs from companies that have o business with them (ideally they would force all exclusively US companies to have a.USA domain but that ain't gonna happen).
