  1. The problem with these OS'es is that they don't have any apps. If I run Android on my television I can run gazzilion apps and games for every possible scenario imaginable and I can expect that they will be supported for some time. There is a problem with support for all these third party systems. I can expect that for example Netflix will be supported for a very long time on Android given the user base. But the chances that Netflix will be supported in webOS for the version on your TV in the next 10 years is slim to none. For example I bought a Philips TV with SmartTV OS like 8 years ago and none of the apps work any longer and can't be updated since they connect to some web functions which have been discontinued.

Apple is an extremely annoying company with the "not invented here" mentality. If I have to bring a different cable for every iDevice everywhere I go I will not buy your product.

might think that Apple "is good at making money." But he says "that's not who we are

That really isn't equal comparision in any way. If you had used cars instead of guns it would maybe have been better argument.

You see guns are special objects. For most other objects their primary purpose is not directly to kill people, although some can be used in such a way indirectly. Therefore guns are special objects, which are hard to compare to anything else.

The second problem with that argument is that no one is trying to ban guns entirely. Most people just want to have some serious regulations on their usage and limit what people can get them.

  17. Zip and WAP on All Major Browsers Now Support WebAssembly (bleepingcomputer.com) · · Score: 1

Has anyone tested if there are actually any benefits compared to just zipping up the js file and send that? This kind of wire format has actually been done before in WAP with horibble results. The problem with this approach is that you are hard coding the wire format to the data format, so if you add new data definitions you must also change the transfer format.

But what is actually worse is that this adds little benefit or possibly worse to just using a generic compressor like zip instead. So instead of getting the best of both worlds: Compression and independent wire format, you get the worst of everything: New compression format that has not been tested very much and tigthly coupled wire format.

I don't think anyone will yell when an operating system comes with basic software that makes it usable. Having an OS with no text editor, file browser, sound player, calculator, image viewer, screen saver, e.t.c or basically zero applications is completely useless. I think the litigations where mainly because they bundled the applications so tightly that these applications where no longer applications but a part of the OS and couldn't be removed cleanly. There where also secret API's that gave Microsoft application better integration than competitors.

I personally would want as many basic applications as possible to come with an OS. I would like to see Movie editors, Sound editors, Media Players, Sound recorders, word processing, spreadsheet to be included with an OS. But you also have to have the ability to remove these if you want and install some other products.
