  1. Re:Outage on Slashdot commenters on Sony Outage Disables DASH Devices, No ETA On a Fix · · Score: 1

All the regulars are unable to post because their PCs keep upgrading to Windows 10 all by themselves, and their Linux machines no longer work and they're unable to diagnose the problems because systemd has discarded all the errors sent to stderr.

That said, there is hope. A Kickstarter, funded using Bitcoins, has been created that seeks to resolve the problem by increasing the number of women posting to Slashdot.

Hey, I know, maybe the reason there are fewer Slashdot commentators is that we have nothing to complain about any more? ;-)

I woke up this morning to find that even my Android phone had been upgraded to Windows 10, as well as the "Smart" TV and our thermostat (the latter isn't even connected to the network, it's not even digital, it's one of those ones with a lever you point vaguely at a temperature.)

I'm guessing the only reason my Mac hasn't upgraded to Windows 10 is that it's still in the middle of copying that 17 megabyte file.

While in the US, digital TV is associated with HD, in Europe it was originally associated with "more channels", HD coming later. The "more channels" thing is also the argument for digital audio, and the US "equivalent" of DAB, HDRadio (urgh) is mostly about adding channels, with a minor quality improvement that's kind of noticable but most ears forget about after a few seconds of listening.

I don't think it even fits into the stopped clock thing to be honest. It's easy to install third party app stores or bypass the Play Store to install apps, it's perfectly legal to fork Android, and Google, as the principle developer of the project, does actually get some rights from having that status.

There's no mandate that forces companies to sign with Google. Amazon would be delighted for mobile phone makers to partner with it. Google is, for better or worse, what people actually want.

  8. On the other hand, remember this is the same Microsoft that's been moving towards distributing Windows for free. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 can be obtained, by manufacturers, for free if distributed with hardware that falls below a certain specification, and the Windows 10 free update seems to be geared towards a future model where Microsoft will make money from the Windows ecosystem, rather than from sales of Windows itself.

They haven't yet made it free for everyone, but it would terrify investors and screw with their finances if they suddenly cut off a working revenue stream. Instead, I think they're working on phasing it out.

The Fire Phone, while flawed and not what anyone wanted, had some impressive technologies in it that shows Amazon might be able to pull off a VR system technically. Whether they'd produce something anyone wants is another question, but it'd be nice to see what they come up with.

It is completely false to suggest Sarkeesian has anything to do with his ban. Twitter is full of conservative users, and full of critics of Anita Sarkeesian. And her role on the Trust and Safety Council is related to its function in ending abusive, something Sarkeesian is a recipient of.

Unless McCain has actually posted content similar to that shown here aimed at Sarkeesian, he's not going to be banned for it.

I don't doubt, because this is Slashdot, that a few people use them - with a stock ROM installed - for checking their email, but that's not really their purpose and Amazon doesn't go out of their way to encourage that kind of use, unlike Google Android where you pretty much set up Google's groupware suite as part of the setting it up process, and unlike phones where you have all of the above plus the mandatory text messaging.
