is going to be "we have all these people ripping mp3's from cd". not some obscure hack on quicktime easily patched. FEAR OF THE RIAA AND SUBMISSION TO IT IS NOT GOING TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE, OK?!
if you don't see that the RIAA is going to impose the draconian measure whether someone cracks it or not, then i'm not really sure what to say to you.
and for the record, they stopped showing protest on television news long before i stopped watching television. the revolution will not be televised, after all.
and if it means anything, i can be located at http://thedark.moonside.org / 45 bobolink bay, regina SK.
is going to push DRM to the point of more or less absolute control.
this guy is part of the resistance against that.
the point with this layer of applications is to get people in the world used to DRM. "hey, drm isn't so bad, itunes, windows and musicmatch use it,it protects us from viruses, how can that be bad?"
then they come up with hardware locked drm. then the drm-happy laws start to be created and enforced in an increasing cycle of state-sponsorred terror, fear, and state-level-self-destruction.
if you don't see where they[the *aa] are going with this, you should look harder. the next step may be creating a method of music distrobution that makes most media censorship look like child-play.
the listeners-liscences are only the beginning, after all.
at THIS point, the process looks not to be totally lost. after all, if this system can be broken, others can. we have not lost all hope yet.
i heard a tale of a computer built without circuitry, or at least without the standard silicon/transistor wiring of the time(possibly late 80s/early 90s?)..that was built to take a direct hit with an EMP. given it would be fairly expensive, big, clunky, mechanical, it can be done. and considerring how many people out there know about electronics, know the paths that have to be taken, if people really clamped down on the high end computing scene, how long would it be before a low-end erupted? i want to think that it would be possible for a startup company to in that kind of climate succeed. of course then there's the laws....but hey! they aren't in canada yet, and if this sort of operation were based there, hell even made into a crown, things could be different...
which community are you talking about?
on
Linux in 2004?
·
· Score: 1
there are two in question here, open source, and free software.
people in the free software community are not going away because of rms and his "obnoxious ethics"...and so what if people are being driven away from the free software community because of its raving visionaries? this should not effect a complete and seperate open-source community. remember it's the union of the two communities that is important here, and so long as there isn't some sort of net loss, things are ok.
and keeping an elitist either-you-get-it-or-you-dont side AND a we-welcome-everybody side to the whole ordeal seems to me very logical and practical, especially for something that just sort of happened to self-convulse into being.
also remember, some of us are geeks...social grace, caring about what others think, and diplomacy play no time in my mind when bigger issues are at stake...and rms knows this more then anyone.
of course, mabye i misinterpreted something. i haven't met rms live yet, only seem breif interviews and clippings of him. but there's an fsf-associate meeting coming up, so who knows.
i hope you one day open your eyes and live with the rest of us in the real world, because these things happen there.
granted, i myself am a quiet, meek and respectful musician and CS student,
but the weird and scary life of working at a nightclub, and seeing exactly what goes on behind the scenes there for some year and a half is what i speak from here.
sex with animals is more common than you'd think, drug assisted orgies happen, and i'm not certian about the fantasy rape thing, but i'd definitely point it down to a hardware error.
the real world is cold, and unforgiving.
it's best for people to be aware at least of what it's capable of.
by the time i started working for the nightclub i was 19, and i had heard about or seen pictures of most of the activities i saw live.
so it didn't really make THAT much of an impression on me.
but i can tell you, though, that in the Real World, things are not as clean as you make it out to be.
hell there are things i know about that make animal sex, orgies and fantasy rape seem like plain missionary position consentual-between-two-mairried-adult sex.
the problem is desperate ecconomic conditions, and other such factors. why are college aged females starving to the point that getting fucked up the ass on film is a Good Thing?
now granted, there are some who would go for that sort of thing anyways, as autopron somewhere elsewhere has pointed out, but there ARE women who do this sort of thing for money.
"repetition for money."
i would say if your daughter is messing around with middle aged men at 12 you missed the boat, and no amount of corrective parenting is going to solve your situation.
shame.
of course, not that many people do much better, sadly.
i adire your way of dealing with this issue.
however i hope that once your children learn to use anonymizer/style or really any other circumvention methods to get around your walls you set up
that you let them, or at the very least while clamping down on their technical ability, don't punish them with your 'law' or with any other punishments.
this was a RANDOM url. i could have picked another one, like slashdot.org, or goatse.cx, or msdn.ca but i chose that one.
and MY favorite site on the internet is most definitely mine(which is offline atm:/ )...but also jems such as deviantcontrol.com and of course thekult.net...really hold my attention as well.
in the meanwhile +5 insightful? what the fuck...???
don't make them raise the price.
raiese the price of the tariff 1:1 for every raise that microsoft makes.
at first it will be 20$ tariff, then 50$ then 500$ then 3000$ and then sooner or later no one will be buying MS products and the ones who are are both going to widespread pirate it, and give money to the local government so they don't have to tax the rest of the populous quite as much
ever consider how many " useless, egotistical "
people there are?
and furthermore who the hell do you think you are to tell the rest of us what we should and should not do with our home computers connected to the internet? if you don't like personal websites theres an easy solution : don't go to them. if you wind up on one, either click the "back" part of your home browser or enter in some random url, like for example http://www.slashdot.org.
i don't CARE what other people care about.
the internet allows freedom of expresson, and freedom of thought, and to constrain this in the straightjacket of public morals and thought is self defeating.
'to care about what other people think of you is to be controlled by them'-voltaire
but the easiest way is to say that different people here have different opinions of bush.
some of us consider him some sort of a moron,
some of us consider him some sort of evil dictator [mastermind] intent on securing his power and the power of those around him.
if you have a room with four people, and two each beleive the above, you will see a similar thing that is happening here.
the long awnser, however includes something about the hive-mind here, and how contradictory thoughts are necessarry in such situations, and how we are either uncertian yet, as a community, or how there is some sort of complex idea where bumbling idiot and evil genius can possibly be united in some form.
as for myself, i tend to view bush the same way jello biafra did, for awhile at least. he's harmless. it's the people behind him who are the trouble.
and i think if you looked to the highest ecconomic strata in the united states, you would see there is a correlation with the people behind bush.
i don't have too many people i converse with day to day,
but so far i have met one person who's purchased an XP Liscence / actually purchased XP / is using a real copy of XP straight from install. EVERYONE i know who is using XP is using a ripped version.
the killer app? that you don't have to commit 'piracy' to use linux.
that and you don't lose intellectual property rights to your works by creating them on linux systems...
files are accidentally deleted. hard drives crash and burn. records bend and scratch. minidiscs i'm sure will get lost. tapes,..i don't even want to go near... what does that leave? CDROMs will last something like a half million years if stored properly. while obviously not absolute sound quality, they do provide a good storage medium...at least until blue laser dvd's come along. ideally, i would like to have plenty of cd's for idle listening, and burn them all to ogg or mp3 and listen to that.
and when my mp3 player/computer dies, my cd's will just redubbed to ogg/mp3.
and hey! record at extreemly high bitrates if you want better quality, and put it on cdr's. not a perfect solution but mabye one day it could be...
someone once told me that the standard fare for murder was some 50 000 (unless there was some sort of difficulty/public figure/security involved, i'd assume). I have been saying this for a long time, but if microsoft Is going to offer 250 000$ for the arrest of a person, and it costs roughly 50 000$ for someone to be 'offed...how long is it going to be before microsoft assassins start plucking specific people out of the genepool?
microsoft could kill five people for that amount...imagine a world with no linus trovalds, no richard stallman, no bruce perens, no eric raymond, and no judge-who-ruled-against-microsoft-lately-person-wh o-i-don't-know-their-name.
mark my words, corporate sponsorred gang wars, complete with driveby shootings are coming, if not allready here. astroturfing is only the beginning. i give it 15 years, max.
a lot of people used analog cell phones, and a LOT of people use chordless phones...(trust me, for the past year and a half i've been taking orders at a pizza delivery shop...and probably a good 7/8 calls come in from either chordless phones or cellphones... and about 1/4 of the cellphones i've seen are either tdma or plain cdma(?). you do however raise a good point about calling-from-POTS-To-VoIP...which i would have never of thought of considerring i have never really owned a phone line and the closest people can get to contacting me is showing up in #fej in irc.othersideirc.net on a IRC Client
i am no expert in these matters, but wouldnt it be 'where you have to wait until there is at least one available connection local to where you want to call from your VoIP network to POTSland'? i mean, there are maximum capacities for a lot of things...satilite communication, cell phone networks, atlantic-telephone-cables...with enough people local to who you want to call, there will be more chances that you will have an open line.
sure there will be times when local POTS systems are unreachable. but this is only until more universal acceptance/bigger measures can be taken...
the matrix is an attempt at taking capital wealth from multiple places and redistributing it.
the matrix is a kung fu movie for the new
age.
the idea of matrix is a lie, much like any other religion or cult or fictional work. but we want to beleive it...because of some unknown urge to subvert our consious states and fill ourselves with the numbing opiates of fantasy.
i think it has accomplished quite a lot, and considering how vehemently anti-warner-brothers/mass-media i usually am, i can say honestly i have not been inspired by anything(except perhaps pink floyd) as much as i have been by the matrix, and the animatrix in particular.
i have my tickets for a showing in some 7 hours.
without the matrix, orginizations such as the kult would have never taken off, definitely, and i would not be a computer science major, philosophy minor. I wonder if the matrix could then be compared to the 'hackers' or 'wargames' of our decade, hmmm...?
