Has anyone done any studies on what environments are best to learn at? I mean the GUI is so much more complicated than the CLI. Look at it, with the GUI you've got the cursor you've got to remember which buttons on the mouse do what and also what a single and double click do. Thats several options just for one device. Then you got to worry about all the objects on the screen, all of which act differently, icons, desktop, windows.. You can go further, windows -> buttons, sliders, check boxes, radio buttons, text boxes,... this list goes one.
With the command line, its a lot simplier. You have some space to type in and well, thats basicly it. I knows theres more to it, but i propose that linux is easier to learn the simplier things than windows.
Eg, such things as files, the difference types (text, binary), directories, file system structure, programs etc i feel would all be better learn on a unix or dos command line. Because, theres less to distract and less the user has to worry about. Its also a lot easier for an experianced person to teach a novice.
When i try to tell my mother stuff, i use words that well, are no big deal to us such as title bar, window, icon etc but she doesnt know what the hell is going on. But with a command line, i'd just have to tell her a few basic commands, tell her what the command line is, tell her how to type in something and press entre...
I think linux, for the simplier stuff would be a better start than any GUI environment. And then when your ready to go for the GUI, load up explorer or X or whatever...
Has anyone ever done any studies to see if this is true. It seems so obvious because the simplier things always come first. The command line was first, the gui was second.
I cant wait till theres a window manager written for Mozilla and a desktop. Mozilla has a some nice apps for it like IM clients and IRC clients, games etc.
I know OEone (or whatver its called) exists but its mainly for redhat right? And it seems as if its mainly for the beginer. Its application focus with kidna doesnt sit well with me.
I think once a Moz Desktop is developed we'll be set. Wont have to bugger round with other GUI's and mozilla apps will load a lot faster:).
When thunderbird and firebird are the main components of the mozilla build, i'll start downloading that again so i can take advantage of the fullness of mozilla and the apps that are developed for it.
But for now, Firebird and Thunderbird it is:). Great OS apps. Lovem. Well, i'll find out if i love thunderbird.
no i know that Firebird and Thunderbird use the same tookit. But i noticed that thunderbirds records libgtk2 and that firebird only required libgtk1.2 (or soemthing like that). Does this mean both these libraries will be used? Why? im guessing the linux version of the gui toolkit uses these?
I think your right on the money. This way the youth can get involved and have an incentive to do great things.
I've been thinking of a cool project to do recently as i think it would be benifitial to so many people and there doesnt seem to be anything like it around (program and combined licence).
So this could be the incentive to pull my finger out. Also, this type of this could also attract contributer and customers to your particular Open source product!
Is it really important for the public to know exactly what a Gigabyte is or a MegaByte. Or for that matter GigaHertz or MegaHertz etc...
I think basicly the community should only need to know that when a Byte is at the end of something such as Mega Giga or Kilo that its a term of storge. I feel that they may need to know that Mega is larger than kilo and Giga is larger than kilo etc. I dont think its important to get into the fine detail of stuff, such as what these things are made up of on the board.
Another example, Hertz... when they hear or see that, they know it has something to do with speed. Speed related. And that the bigger the better, normaly.
AmigaOS4 has MP and VM, but im not sure if either of these where switched on (MP is optional for backwards compatibilitiy). I am aware that the only thing that was running when these test where taken (apart from the software to run the tests) was the kernel. So maybe these wernt on, but i dont know. This was the re-write of exec (ExecSG[Second Generation]) for the PPC.
I dont know about you, but i learnt the meaning of irony from alanis morisets song. I stand by that meaning. What ever it was.
But think about it... people invent words all the time. Look at Australia for example, we've had many words all to our selfs for a very long time. Now thanx to the crock hunter you yankees know about them and sometimes use them. My point it, if a word can be made up and put into a dictionary (as some aussie slang has been) why cant the meaning of the word be modified? Surly if more people use a word one way then people use it another, the majority wins and we have a new meaning?
Not that im suggesting that we suddenly go change the dictionary meaning or that the majority of people use it differently, but its worth a thought!
I've seen a release from Hyperion Entertainment that stated QNX RTOS had context switching times of 40 microsecons. In the same paper, it asid MacOSX was around 400.
The announcement was that AmigaOS4 PPC on a 600Mhz AmigaOne had around 4 microseconds, give or take a few micro. Im not sure how correct my figures were, but AmigaOS turned out a little better...
I wonder if theres room for more playsers in this niche.
Media Player Well quick time is an execelent player (no dobut) i use it very rarly on the PC, but i guess Apple users use it all the time. I wonder why MS havnt pulled media player yet? Media player easier to support? I'd say that would have something to do with it. Media player is basicly a player and some codecs. Were has the web browser IE, is much more, you have to worry about JS support, w3c standards, HTML,XML,CSS,XSL etc... and integrating other technologies into the borwser such as flash, other media formats etc... So my guess is media player will be ther for some time (unless the plan is to just forget about macOS users, which could very well be the case).

Office The best office suit in the world arguable:). This will be round for ages. It has the featueres, the user base, not really the price but it has enough sales on MacOS that its not going to be taking a hike for a long time.
Outlook I'd guess maybe the next thing to go? Sure its easy to support, but without its goood buddy IE, i cant see it sticking around for years. Chances are, this might be the next thing apps attempts to emulate! There for, it'll be the next thing to go.
Virtual PC eh?
I dont think too many things are going to go. Outlook would have to be the next one, and coming in a close second would be media player.
But, if Apples market share increases, i'd think MS would be bringing back IE and wouldnt even think of not providing its products to apple, otherwise they'd be hurting themselfs (i was goign to say kill themselfs, but common, pins wont kill a giant).
Not when they were first released. But its been years, and people have updated their systems. Most people who run the 68000 computers, have added PPC boards and more memory to their systems. Those people should be able to handle it alright.
Those people who have no upgrades may not be able to handle it, and i dont understand why they still want to support dieing hardware. The community wont move ahead if people continue to support dieing hardware.
But, by making an 68k version of Mozilla, you'r also support people who use the popular emulators UAE, Amithlon and Amiga Forever.
Also, MorphOS and AmigaOS4 (modern implementations of AmigaOS PPC) also have fantastic 68k JIT emulation built in, so you'll be able to run them with great speed on the new PPC platforms pegasos and AmigaOne.
We'll according to SCO theres a lot more then just 80 lines. This is just a tast. A major argument for SCO is that, not just the source was identical, but the comments too.
There a far more was to describe a peice of codes functionality in english, then there is to write it an programing language. For that reason, its likely that the code originated from the same source.
What source was that? We'll, thats a good question. SCO is going to have to prove that it did infact come from Unix System V software originaly, and not from linux to SCO or from a 3rd party.
What i would love to know though is, if this effects BSD. I know people have asked this question before, but they dont seem to mention it in the articles, and SCOs claim seems targeted towards Linux souly.
BSD has already gone through this stuff before. Infact, if it wasnt for the AT&T stuff, BSD may never have become a full Operating System.
I wonder if SCO is just intentialy throwing an AT&T. Kinda like a copycat style legal case!:) We'll, i guess this is just Linux next step to being Unix like. It has to be involved in at least one court case before its really considered to be like Unix:).
Im used to the idea that my car can blow up. But my phone:/... Well i actualy dont have a phone, and its just another reason not to get one... Instead of cancer to the head i'll be getting a huge hole blown in the side of it!!!
I've never heard of it. SPAM is spam to me... Its more likly Aussies like myself would adopt whatever Americans use. The reason is that the internet was formed in America, there a many more people who use it, and when something new terms come downunder (internet wise) i'd guess their gunna come from the US. So:) we speak what you speak!!!:)

P.S - i wish that who ever programmed had given me a better vocabulary, or at least integrated a spell checker within me!! (calculous? is that the right spelling?)

New PPC machines have been released. You can buy them now from a dealer new your or from the manufactorer...
The boards are as follows.
Pegasos From Genisi
AmigaOne From Eyetech Based on MAI Teron design.
Soon Pegasos II From Genisi
The pegasos board runs various operating systems including the flagship os MorphOS
AmigaOnes run the new AmigaOS4 developed by Hyperion Entertainment.
