By the time these computers exist, the idea of desktop will be no more. Instead i see these beasts ackting like a server turning on your lights, deliverying decoded music (mp3) video (mpg4), etc etc to other device aroundt he house were we sit in our cumfy arm chair or recliner!
Plus, even those these might be avaliable in 100 years, their not going to be cheap! lol... no home will have one for a long time!
As i believe (correct me if im wrong) but if these ideas are not already patiented they have recieved copyright or some sort of protection, just because they have been talked about publicly or in this case publish for the public.
So if i remember correctly. Which im am probably NOT, these ideas are safe for a number of years, for the people who spoke about them!
hrmm... someone may want to correct me if im wrong.
Thats a huge annoucement! This could severly hurt Macromedia. Either people have been right, OSS is going to take away jobs or it'll force companies such as Macromedia to continue enhancing their products with not seen before features... theres a word for it, just cant think of it atm:)...
I used this at my last possition ALOT. We did have licences for it and before i left/was made redundant we were looking at OSS for many of our tools, such as OpenOffice (OO) to replace word. Theres no doubt that this Nvu will be one of the great open source apps, up there with OO, linux, Mozilla etc!
And that word i was looking for is "Inovate". Macromedia are going to have to continualy inovate and enahnce their product by thinking of new ideas, or support new technologies like XML and XSL to get people to keep buying their stuff..
I guess this means im not going to have look for Dreamsweaver craks (which can be annoying) from now on!
OSS protects commercial vendors from illegal copies of their software!
Well i was under the impression that you'r not allowed to copy material even for your own use. Im not sure of the licences or those that may be attached to songs sold through itunes or something similar.
But surly the blame there lies with the guy who hosts the files. He's aquired them somehow. The only way they wouldnt be illegal is if aquired them through itunes or something.
Maybe then there should be a law hosting those files openly? But thats even worse really. Its difficult i'll admit!
Well lets face it, if they make a law, then they're going to have to be very specific about it. Laws cant be abstrack!
If they were to go about it, maybe the could say linking to illegal media as defined by the RIAA OR ARIA is also illegal. Something like that.
Im not a law maker so i dont pretent to know what im talking about it. but if they where to do it, i dont think it'd be as bad as your claiming it to be unless they wernt very specific when they make the law which in that case, what you describe could very well happen, and we should all be afraid... very afraid!
This does not appear to be supported by Australian law.
And why should it be? Just because i know theres a drug dealer down the road and may direct the odd pot head to him. I dont think im breaking the law. Just helping someone feed their addiction.
Nope, i've thought this myself.. Its stupid.. if i wanted, and with appropriate concil approval i could put a 508 spiral on my house and then my house would be the talest building in the world...
Should be floor, but then you'r gunna run around with people saying "Technically, this" and "Technically that"... So theres no use in changing it now!
PHP is awsome, and from what i've seen of presentations regarding PHP5, scalability is not the only thing in common, but so is public, private, protected types, exceptions (try & catch), and other things that for now have been the domain of Java or C++...
When php5 comes out i believe i'll start to dabble in it again. Php is an awsome language and i believe the future will be built around interpretive langauges.
By the looks of php5 (following link) it has a great future!
I'd love this. I love watching the Science Mysteries on the discovery channel and have been faciniated by mysteries ever since grade school... Although back then i was paranormal activities, such as ghosts, deamons ect, but its all the same field:)
When will this get to Australia? Foxtell/Austar? Gime!
Its all been done before. Commador did it to, Amiga. Its very well known that Commador did practicly no advertising, ecept maybe in parts of europe. I suspect that the US and Australia missed out on any if there was any.
Also, as i hear it, so dont quote me on it, the DreamCast was also a victom of poor management and marketing.
Theres been plenty of examples... shame we dont learn from our mistakes hey!
The way i see it, the goal of humanity is to continually improve life for our species. Its totally non logical to try to do that yourself. That is, two heads are better than one, or in this case 6 billion or so heads are better than 1 billion or so heads. But im not aiming this at China, I'm also aiming it at rusia and the US, which are basiclly the only countries (that i know of) to have mad a significant impact on space travel. Because if they had thought about it before they made their great triumphs, than we'd prolly had done what they planned to do a lot earlier and maybe more.
Some call it the space race. It is not a race. Who cares what country got to space first, or what country got to the moon first, we're humans or beings. And i know some may be thinking im like this cause i am Australian, and we havnt committed anything to space travel but seriously, if Australia tried to get to mars first, without outside help, I'd be pissed off at the mismanagement of the whole thing.
The facts are, as i said, if funding and expertise came from around the world, we'd all have a better chance at getting where we want to be, a lot faster and maybe with a smaller rate of fatalities. Put aside the pride of your nation for one moment and lets pool together the pride we have of being human.
The only times when we seem to come to together is to kill someone such as in a war. Lets do something GOOD together! That way, we'll be come better more quickly and everyone will have the same advantages as everybody else.
Its a dream anyway. The fact that some people might agree with me doesnt help. This message needs to be sent to our presedents, prime ministers or "rullers" to show them that we dont care who makes it first, just that it should happen for the good of all humanity!
Another point. This is ultamatly something that will help everyone, and the fact that a specific group of tax payers (chineese) are paying for something that has already been completed is a shame. The old saying, re-inventing the wheel. A very important rule of engineering, yet we're still doing it.
Unless telstra have also struck a deal with Micrsoft, why on earth would they use wma? I mean, theres far more support on just about every OS for mp3... I thought if you had a product, you'd want as many people to be able to use it.
I know people that perfer wma, and i have no doubt that its good, but the OS support for mp3 overwhealms wma doesnt it? Seems a little silly. I wont by wma, but if it was mp3, i would have thought about it. My entire collection is mp3, and i have no intention of converting.
I was worried about the fuel cells doing this when the first come out in laptops late next year or early 2005, but it looks like we dont need fuel cell powered devices to make things go boom.
I would have never expected a normal battery to expload. but if these can, is there a larger risk of fuel cells exploading? and if they do, wouldnt the explosion be much larger?
Just another reason why i dont need a mobile/cell phone:) (and dont want one)
This is fantastic, and its amazing that these have survived. They have not only endured a coupla million years or whatever it was, but also inbreading.
Australia has one of the worst track records when it comes to land clearing and so much of the country is still undiscovered. Its so vast, that most parts of teh country dont get rain for years, yet some get it every day.
Australia needs to better protect its deserts, scrub land, rain forest, wet lands, snow fields and tropical oasis's because there are so many untapted resources that could lie the curers for many diseases. But more than that, i love this Country, and i'd still like to see it in the near future. Hopfuly in a better state than it is now.
Its also even more fantastic that these tree's continue to survive because of the amount of fires in the Blue Montains where the trees were discovered.
Why cant we give the real size of the board instead of some type of marketing jargon. Why not give boards, sizes much like cloths has sizes.
We dont go round calling a babies T-shits micro-shirts or nano-shirts.
What happens when someone actualy invents an actual nano-itx board. Their not going to be able to name it. And i feel sorry for that person.
I guess these boards have other characteristics like power consumption, but that could easily be overcome with a sub parameter.
so maybe a mini-tix board could be called:
8:40
8 meaning the size of the board and 40 being some type of power consumption rating.
We shouldnt use the english language like a whore. Tap into the vast realm of numbers. If we do, the english langauge will be around to be used on many many devices for many years to come.
The english language: Limited Resource. Stop the mining.
This is my pathetic attempt to make someone laugh.
Ahhh bugger... i must have missed the article on MS dumping XML support. I saw this as a good thing because the content of the document could be morphed to fit into any display the user wanted it to. Like a browser, PDA, Phone or some other mystical device.
I must say, its less interesting now that MS have droped it, and im not sure if the fact that Star ofice has it, pleases anyone. I Say that because, MS Office has the most market share, and enabling XML documents would have allowed better operibility amoung other wordprocesses and MS document Apps. I was hoping Star OFfice, Gnome Office and KDE office could all contribute to a set of libraries to parse the XML Word Documents, which would benefit everyone, but looks like that will never happen.
But other than displaying XML data differently, XML also has other advantages. I've read several articles on how it could help the searching of ducments for specific combinations of text etc...
Theres so many cool things that i cant even imagine would have been able to be done with XML word documents. The fact that Star office is doing it doesnt interest me as much as if MS word was doing it.
MS Office is a better product, which much more market share in my opinion.
im a little confused as to why firebird and thunderbird have to use gtk. And if they have to, why dont they use the same version.
Answer this: Is the reason why they have to use GTK+1.2/2 because these are standalone applications and cant use widgets for everything such as scrolling a html page (scrollbar) ?
Im guessing this has something to do with it, cause the scroll bars are different on other platforms such as windows!
Im guessing that when we can get firebird and thunderbird in the mozilla suit that these will use xul to provide the scrollbars for the scrolling of the main window(s)!!
Is this right?
P.S i also read somewhere that the menues have something to do with useing gtk+...
So this is what the end of the world feels like.
It'll be like reinventing computing!

When can i expect the linux port? :)
Thats a huge annoucement! This could severly hurt Macromedia. Either people have been right, OSS is going to take away jobs or it'll force companies such as Macromedia to continue enhancing their products with not seen before features... theres a word for it, just cant think of it atm :)...

Immoral as it is, its not illegal.
lol... man, you spend WAY too much time on here... lol!!
Karama Whore... LOL!!!
To whome is it unfair? You'r fellow compeditors or those who shall receive you'r wrath!?
Nope, i've thought this myself.. Its stupid.. if i wanted, and with appropriate concil approval i could put a 508 spiral on my house and then my house would be the talest building in the world...

You forgot to mention Australia (no i dont consider Australia part of Asia). NineMSN will also be removing the chat services it offers.
