Reduce bandwidth, and you dont think XML+XSLT wont do that? Are you insane. I've done several webpages in both HTML and XML+XSLT and the XSLT designed pages cut the size in half. Slashdot is more complex than any XML+XSLT site i'ved one, but that just means theres more savings!!!
I disagree with you. XML+XSLT would result in far more reduced size. XML is pretty chunky for data use compared to binary form, but this is a totaly different subject, and if thats your argument, than your wrong!
Its just another website. If you ask me, if you'r gunna retool slashdot, you should be using XML for all the data and then XSLT + CSS for the style. Makes more sence. That way other devices such as PDAs and phones can more easily receive the content and style it according to their liking!
I know XML doesnt have the greatest support in some browsers and i dont like the idea of XML mimetypes although it'll have greater use in the future no dobut! But maybe a cocoon?? server could be setup for those with old browsers or new browsers with old support?!?
I love XML... I'd also appreciate an XUL version of slashdot. But thats what good about XML, you could provide so many different versions of slashdot for all. Also you could keep upgrading slashdot but also allow it to have backwards compatibility by allowing people to use different rendered versions of slashdot. Such as a HTML3.2, an HTML4, XHTML or XML/XSL etc.
But the emphisis here is that, you could make every type of slashdot. Also with the amount of things being submitted and the user jounals an enhanced search engine could also be built, or USERs could build their own XSL and CSS style sheets to view slashdot the way they want.
I tells ya, im excited:) although i shouldnt be because this will prollly never happen!
If i used Windows for years i think i can do with debian:)... Or, is it time for an OpenBSD Kernel based debian distribution?:) Theres already HURD and NetBSD (maybe a few others?) why not OpenBSD?
Common, its not that bad. No software is perfect and i think its a long time before we will find that mystical peice of code...
Are these private schools? If not, how much money does the American government have to throw away. Is there going to be HUGE advantages for each student to have his/her own laptop? Yeh its cool, and their going to be able to get their assigments via online, saving the teacher having organise the hand outs all by his/her self, and maybe you'll be able to order your lunch from the kiosk whilst you'r walking there but does it all really help?
Maybe in the future i can see students needing laptops, and i wish i had one in my uni lecturs instead of using a pen to write, just type!
Also i can see advantages, like accessing the net for projects and assigments... Good for googling! But surely they didnt have to buy EACH student a LAPTOP, and an APPLE one at that! Wouldnt several cheap X86 desktop systems do the job? Why pick laptops, which are expensive and PPCs, which are expensive. So much money could have been saved. Also, i've only mentioned the software. We dont have to talk at all about the advantages of OSS!!!
I dont understand it. The article didnt go into the advantages of such a purchase. I cant see them! I hope if my government does similar things, they think first!
You can tell people are desprite when they try and point the fingure at Microsoft for not inovating. If they where to say something about the bugs/holes in the software than i'd have to agree, but inovation?
Maybe theirs not much inovation in the user interfaces but behind the scenes they're always something new going on.
Like XML Data islands and Data binding. In my mind that was an inovation that led to.NET web services, a larger inovation. And if you'r going to us Firebird or Mozilla in your argument, can you say they've inovated? What? popup blocking and tabs? Pfffffft i can name at least two browsers that have had TABS for some time. Opera, and AWeb (an Amiga browser, no open source, or was that Voyger?).
I might give them popup blocking but things that are this obvious arnt inovations. Inovations are those thigns that blow people away and are totaly unexpected and they are things people never thought they'ed use but they cant live without.
I think OSS inovates about as much as Microsoft, in some instances, maybe more and others maybe less!
I know what you'r getting at, and if i was too look at my point of view i would say you'r right. But we have this gift that allows us to look at other peoples... The only reason these things seem obvious to you is because you've used them, and you've been using computers for years no or something like that.
My mohther, has never used a computer except for on and off times when something on the tv or in a magazine will suck her in and tell her to look at a particular site. Having said that, my mother really donsnt have a good idea bout the internet! She knows you can find stuff out on it, and talk on it, but doesnt know what it is!
Having said that, she's a newbie, and as such when you use a computer you'r going to have to be able to learn some deffinitions, and what words might mean outside of the computer dont mean the same thing in side the computer... like the time when a program came up and it said "you have performed an illegal operation" and my mum thought i was in BIG trouble, in terms of cops and robbers.
The thing is, the same as computer newbies have to learn some terms, so do linux newbies...
However, i do agree that simplier names are going to help those, not so new people to computing make the transition to linux. It'd would be welcome to many people i would think.
What happened with IBM telling the UK gov that Linux wasnt ready for the desktop?
Also will the choose a certain linux distributing? Or just linux in general. Cause normal consumers would be able to choose for themselfs you know! They've going to have to have a list of suitable linux distros cause some of them are no wear near usable for newbies... And i assume thats what they are trying to do when they say they are pushing it for the desktop?
My cat could open the sliding door to the laundry! It also went to the loo in a drain besides the real loo! Also, i didnt teach my cat to do this, it learnt how to do it!
Maybe this computer could have learnt something from my cat?
Did you know your PDA can also become your phone? Its true and this type of thing isnt going to stop there. You'r PDA may one day function as the remote control to your media collection in your house/car/workplace or tempreture control in home/car etc.
PDA's arnt dead. Nor will they be in the short term. PDA's will adapt to become other devices such as mobile phones and remote controls with more hardware and software functionality built into them and also in the form of PCMCIA and other such technologies.
And lets not forget the people who try and combine the functionality of the phone and PDA into one clever device!
When PDAs start to equal the power of my desktop, i think its time to start upgrading?
Nahh, im tight and im running linux so i dont have to!
But its interesting to watch the advancement of smaller computers approach the speed of your p2 400Mhz PC... I only recently upgraded from a P2 233:) when i bought a 400Mhz compaq, which is now a 266Mhz Firewall/Router.
>>It looks like China is serious about their space >>program, and is taking an incremental approach
Well, at least someone is. Also incase anyone hasnt noticed:) China will be the most, without a doubt the most wealthy nation by far. Im not going to speculate when this happens, but im sure they're already only second to the all mighty USA. So looks like they'll have enough money to keep it going into the future.
When you graft something, you'r not comgbining those plants are you? I thought grafting was taking a cutting and more or less implanting it into the stalk of another tree..
If you really wanted Tomacco fruits, wouldnt you want to cross polinate or genetically engineer it?
Well theres very good water filters these days. Im sure if you ran the water from baths, showers, washing, sink etc (i think we can do with the tolite) you'd just pump it into a filter.
there's people round Oz now that are putting in full water treatment plants under their gardens. Somethings gota be done. Maybe the goverment can do something similar to the PBS (pharasutical benefits scheeme) where they can bring the costs down of water saving devices.
that way everyone can benifit from lower water consumption, not just the rich!
This isnt a new concept and i believe its a terrific one. AROS'sbounty program has been working for AROS for quite a while.
Its also being used to port Mozilla too Amiga compatible systems. Over 4000 dollars has been raised so far for the person(s) who decide to take it on.
Im sure plent of people are doing this and its working. Look at some of those people. Their puting in 100, 200 dollars. Thats a lot of money considering some major packets of software cost that much and these guys are only paying for a feature that is not specific to them, but a community!
"However, the long term ecological effects of reducing evaporation in lakes or reservoirs is not yet clear as evaporation prevention can increase water temperatures and affect the exchange rates of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide."
Yes and lets not wory about the small criters in our water ways. These resevoirs are filled with natice fish that are already under threat of other introduced fish and over fishing.
If we want to preserve water we must first look at building the infrastructure to take water far inland where as know in many contrys they use open channel irrigation where ALOT of water evapourates. I've heard that only 20% of the water in open irrigation actualy absorbs into the ground.
Also we must also make it compulsory for water saving devices, such as flow restricters.
An interesting thing i saw on today tonight a while ago whilst in the middle of the last Aussie drought (which we're still pretty much in) was a guy who was using this left over laundry water and sink water and other waters to water his grass and gardins! Its that type of thinking thats going to save water. Things like that should be made compulsory. Some people with plenty of water such as the USA may be laughing, but this our local water resevour was bello 10% and maybe have infact reached 2% or 1%. Its backup resevour was at around 40%, so you could say that there was a few very nervouse people round!
I agree, this seems like a good idea. but one step at a time please!
Maybe one day these will be actual credit cards... And instead of having several cards such as key cards, master cards, visa, Ami Express, debit cards, etc... all you have to do is upload some software to the card and presto!:)
You could also put your driver licence in there for identification your photo etc.

do you like repeating this stupid jokes? if i can call it a joke!
Sorry, the sub atomic particle overlords dont approve of that!
Yer, but this is more interesting, plus, if we did that, the poor scientests would be out of a job and hence homless and hungry...

Check out this PCMCIA GSM mobile phone
And the mobile phone in a CF Memory card

Exciting stuff!
Steadicopter claims that their helicopter is unique and there is no other of its kind in the world
:)
Not for long
I know its unpopular, but shouldnt internet shoping and what not be taxed? After all, they are still goods and services.
We've still gota pay tax to keep kids in school, our roads being repaired etc.
I think internet goods and services should be taxed, just like any other bloody good or service.
