  1. Geoworks? on GEOS Available for Download After 18 Years · · Score: 5, Insightful

Whatever happened to GeoWorks Ensemble, the version of GEOS that ran on low-end intel/amd boxes? Once upon a time you could load that onto a 386 and it would make a Pentium-based Windows machine look like it was standing still.

I'm looking for Geoworks to throw onto some 486's I want to bring back to life -- the last version I remember had a web-browser and everything!

Seriously. My last GF knew my craving for sugar-laced goodies, so she baked me heart-shaped cookies with M&Ms in them. Also included was a little coupon she hand-drew that was good for a dinner and movie.

I never "redeemed" the coupon. That little scrap of paper is worth a fortune to me because she made it.

I did eat all the cookies however, they were delicious. And I really appreciated the effort she put in.

  4. First Step in Terraforming: on Mars Rover Opportunity Lands Safely · · Score: 3, Funny

I kep thinking about those "airbags". Are they filled with "air", and if so, perhaps we can send a lot more probes to Mars, and sooner or later we'll have sent enough "air" there to start breathing!

I still think they should have sent some kudzu to Mars. Then, by the time that Man actually gets there, he won't need a helmet.

  5. Re:Anime on Japan's Empire of Cool · · Score: 1

You can blame that on the success of Yamato (Starblazers in the USA). Prior to Matsumoto reinventing anime, there were episodic giant robot shows (Mazinger Z), episodic shows like Astroboy and Speed Racer, where every episode was independent.

Matsumoto introduced the concept of "Space Opera" (as opposed to soap opera) where each episode was part of a continuing storyline, and each episode ended with a little bit of a cliffhanger to bring you into the next (Hurry Star Force, there are only XX Days until all life on earth is extinguished).

When Yamato became the incredible phenomenon it was in Japan, every studio set out to emulate it. Taking the popular Giant Robot format, Nippon Sunrise gave birth to "Mobile Suit Gundam", a hard-sci-fi series that made use of fairly realistic physics and had a continuing storyline.

Gundam did fairly well in Japan, but it wasn't until it was resurrected later (in the form of Zeta Gundam) that the show really took off.

Anyhow, since that time, almost all anime is a continuing story. There are exceptions (Patalliro, Dr. Slump, Doeremon, Pokemon, etc.) where the continuing story is not the real plot, just the vehicle to get from episode to episode.

  6. Re:Kaylee, definitely. on Firefly DVD Set Released · · Score: 1

Now that's hot. That's something the whore chick could never do. This is why Kaylee rocks.

  8. Personal Rocketship for Sale on Personal SUV of the Sky · · Score: 1

This is the stupidest thing _ever_ on Slashdot. So, if I put up a cheap-ass website detailing my plans to sell "personal rocketships" (travel NYC to Tokyo in just 2 hours!),and I cobble together some bad photoshop artwork that shows my "prototype concept", can I also get a posting on Slashdot?

Because if so, I'll start making that illustration now. Hey it doesn't have to work, or be aerodynamic, or even be based on a shred of reality. If it's on the web, it must be real!

  9. Michael Jackson's Privacy on Cash Value 1/10 of a Cent · · Score: 2, Interesting

So, lemme get this straight.... If someone publishes personal information illegally, the most a person can sue for is $1000, *and* they have to prove damages?

Well, so that means that if someone were to publish Michael Jackson's personal info, or Carmen Electra's home telephone number, or President Bush's cell phone, the most that any of those celebrities could get is $1000?

    I think not.

So, *why* is Michael Jackson's right to privacy more valuable than mine? Or is this yet another issue where the rich are protected by law, but the common citizens are not protected by law?

I think there's a huge double standard going on here, particulary if the RIAA can claim millions of dollars of damages per song, but I can't claim millions of dollars of damages when TRW sells my credit history to a telemarketer.

I think there's a huge double standard going on here, if celebrities can sue for privacy, but the average joe cannot.

Can't you just see it when the ISP that hosts SOCAN's website (or provides them with connectivity) sends them a $50,000 per month bill (Canadian, or about $25,000 US) due to the "higher costs" of being a part of the internet?

Remember that if Canada taxes the whole internet, then businesses, which usually have more bandwidth than individuals, will likely pay a higher percentage of this so-called tax.

That's going to make for an interesting backlash.

  14. News Agencies Violate the Law to Test It on Kazaa Sues Record Labels · · Score: 1

If I flagrantly violate the Windows EULA by decompiling, reverse engineering, benchmarking, and doing who-knows-what else to it, could I then absolve myself of this by telling them, "I just did it to see if you guys were up to anything illegal"?

Okay, what about news agencies that committ a crime as part of a sting operation? For example, let's say that Geraldo decides he's going to do an investigative report on how secure our airports are after 9/11. So, Geraldo decides he's going to load a suitcase with something that looks like a bomb to see if anyone notices, and he's going to walk through the metal detector with a box cutter.

Now let's say that the security works and Geraldo is caught, and his cameraman catches the whole thing on tape. Do we send Geraldo to JAIL for being a terrorist?

Or does he get off because he was testing the system?

Now flipside, let's say the suitcase with the "bomb" gets through, flies to miami and back and nobody notices, and Geraldo airs his report showing the gross incompetence of our airline safety.

Does the government bust into the studio and arrest Geraldo at that point? After all, he's voilated the law, defacto, he proved that the system failed until he admitted his crime. But the crime took place nevertheless.

Do we let him off for testing the system, or do we haul his ass into jail for 50 years?

And if you decide he deserves to be arrested, what does that say about our country, our freedom of the press, or our ability to question our government? You might as well burn the constitution.

  16. Change the OS! on Computer Makers Sued Over Hard Drive Size · · Score: 1

This is going to seem obvious, but why don't Apple and Microsoft change the OS so that 1000 megs of HD is a Gig? I mean, it *is* deceptive if the Computer seller says that it's a 100Gig drive and then the OS says it's 86gig drive.

So the obvious way out of this problem is to change the OS so that it tells you that it's a 100Gig drive.

  18. EZpass is Micropayments on Fame, Fortune and Micropayments · · Score: 1

Consider a "micropayment" system that DOES work, and that system is EZpass. How that works is a little bit different. They charge your Credit Card $25.00, and use that money to set up an account for you within their system.

Thereafter, they bill your account with the $25 dollars in it, even if the amount is only a dime (but you can imagine that amount could be made even smaller for a true micropayment system).

Since the amount is simply deducted from your "tab", there's no real processing fee like you get with the "real" CC companies.

When you've used up the $25 in your account, then EZPass bills your credit card for another $25, and the process begins anew.

That's how micropayments should work -- any other system will have too many transactions flying between tiny vendors and monolithic credit card firms.

I kept saying that's how I'd get my SGI Onyx that way, but it never seemed to work out. Anybody that steals a mainframe is either looking to part it out and sell it on Ebay, or they are going to melt it down for the valuable metals.

I'd watch two hours of just her, thanks, you don't even need the rest of the crew, although the crazy sister character was pretty interesting, and the fact that the pilot and first officer were married.

Actually, now that I think about it, the whole show was rather good, well cast, good acting, decent plots, and some very witty dialogue.

Overall, a pretty decent show. Where do I go to order that DVD again?

Anyhow, the mechanic chick was really cute, did I say that?

  22. X-15, better idea on More on the Orbital Space Plane · · Score: 1

Nasa is so freaking stupid. They had a "spaceplane" in the 60's and abandoned the program, even though it was the most successful "X" program ever. For next to nothing, North American avaiation could build a slightly bigger and better X-15 style craft. It could hold 2 people, and using the more modern engines made for the shuttle, go much further on the existing fuel supply.

Being small, they could build it from titanium, which would negate the need for tiles. And best of all, you would use a B-52 as a launch platform, *NOT* sticking it vertically on a rocket, which is a stupid, stupid idea.

The X-15 reached space -- that has been confirmed over and over. A slightly better, more modern X-15 could reach LEO.

Just ask Pete Knight, and he'll tell you. The X-15 was the shuttle we should have built the first time around. (incedentally, the shuttle is based on the X-20 DynaSoar program, also from the 60's)...
