I am dismayed as well by everyone saying it's the greatest thing since sliced cheese.
I am a die-hard BG fan. But I find most of this series very flat. Like a soap-opera.
In fact, if I were to say anything about it, I'd say my biggest surprise is me accepting Starbuck. She's cocky...but she's got enough 'tude but not rude to make me feel okay in the roll.
Commander Adama is so flat and typical role. He was originally a wise spiritual leader. That aspect has been totally dropped. And he just seems like the typical cookie-cutter mold.
Apollo, we won't even mention the fact he looks nothing like his father Adama. This guy does NOT feel like a Captain. Something seems missing. Maybe it's too much emphasis on the whole "play it up" with the father conflicts.
Boomer, okay...Boomer was the calm cool collected black man who always had Starbuck's back. Now, we have a whiny asian girl that maybe a cylon and is as far from cool, calm, collected? I'd buy this character if they gave her a new name.
President, typical....but I actually can handle her. She's actually got a few more facets than the extremely flat other characters.
Commander Thai, okay, first off how did the original made some 25 yrs earlier somehow actually have more black male supporting actors than a modern day series. Okay....I think this is such a typical role. The alchoholic. Come on... I think the actor does well but it's like over-focused as if you're watching some "Anti-Drug and Alcohol" promo in a high school class. Needless to say I think there is a lot of potential here. I think one twist that'd be shocking but intriguing would be to have some sort of casual relationship form between Commander Thai and Starbuck.
As for Baltar. No judgement yet. Besides - what a horny !@#$%.
The Cylons. Okay....a tad bit more intimidating. I will give you that. But darn it...I want to hear at least a few more "By your command"s
But how about someone other than China? Their first mission would be to turn it 180 degrees and point it at us.
*LOL*
Actually, I doubt it'd focus well in that case but I do think this is a good idea.
China would launch 15 missions, 14 of which would fail and result in the death of 42 astronauts. But they'd succeed (both in fixing the scope and reducing population)
I think you fail to understand that certain objects have lifespan.
Why don't people drive their cars for a 1,000,000 miles? Because eventually the maintenance costs greatly outweight both the costs and benefits of a buying a new car.
The Hubble is supposed to end service around 2010. The James Webb Space Telescope is slated for an August 2011 launch. We just need to ensure it launches both successfully and on time.
What complicates the question are the breathtaking advances in Earth-based astronomy since the Hubble was conceived. During the 1970s when Hubble was designed, the conventional wisdom was that ground based telescopes would never have the resolution of space telescopes because the atmosphere seeing limited the resolution of ground telescopes. In fact, microcomputer technology starting in the 1990s allowed for adaptive optics which adjusts the mirrors continuously to compensate for changes in the atmosphere.
This means that there is not any need replace the Hubble to obtain better astronomical imagery in the visible range. The new ground-based telescopes can do the job, and even the most ambitious of them, like the Keck in Hawaii and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, are much less expensive than the Hubble and much more sensitive to light. This naturally is much easier to service and update. For example, the VLT cost was roughly 1/7 of the HST cost, and gave the astronomic community four 8.2 meters telescopes, with a resolution almost as high as the Hubble.
Anyways...
The James Webb Space Telescope is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope scheduled for launch in August, 2011 . JWST is designed to study the earliest galaxies and some of the first stars formed after the Big Bang. These early objects have a high redshift from our vantage-point, meaning that the best observations for these objects are available in the infrared. JWST's instruments will be designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, with some capability in the visible range.
JWST will have a large mirror, 6.5 meters (20 feet) in diameter and a sunshield the size of a tennis court. Both the mirror and sunshade won't fit onto the rocket fully open, so both will fold up and open only once JWST is in outer space.
JWST will reside in an L2 Lissajous orbit, about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth.

"I'm a big time supporter of banning hands-on cellphone use by the drivers of moving vehicles."
[[[You're being a fool, don't be...you sound intelligent - so don't give into the media sensationalism. Educate yourself. Look up the statistics on accidents by Triple AAA. You'll discover how much of this is hogwash.
Yes, some people are horrendous drivers on cell phones and should not drive and talk on a cell. Others, go from good to to poor or unsatisfactory drivers. Many are fine....
It's all about brain wiring. But if you do some research you'll find that cell phones are actually pretty low on the causes for accidents.
And I also ask, have you ever seen a drunk driver weaving all over the road, stopping in the middle of the highway, running off into an embankment.
Now how many drunk drivers have you seen in your life? 10, 50, 100, more?
Now how many cell phone drivers have you seen? An equal many perhaps in a single day. Now how many of those drivers have you seen crossing lanes, stopping in the middle of the highway, or going off the road? Any?
Could it REALLY be that dangerous? And if elderly are as bad as cell phone drivers. And cell phone drivers are worse than drunks. Why do we let elderly drive?
In truth, the thing most cell phone drivers do on the phone is they tend to slow down. People complain that they're going 20 mph under the speed limit. In truth, they're usually DOING the speed limit. But we get bothered because we don't want to drive 50mph, we want to go our 70mph. These slow cell phone users slow US down...so we despise and criticize them.
Sure there are people who do too much, they drive, talk, eat, pick their nose and try to change a CD player. In fact most cell phone swerving is when a driver tries to add a "third" task.
And yes...a few are incapable of multi-tasking in this way and should not drive and talk unless absolutely necessary.
Is cause for 20 yrs a cell phone was a "status" symbol of the ultra-elite.
Now that it's so common that homeless people have cell phones. But you have these technology neophytes who think cell phones are evil cause they're elitist status symbols and must be brought down...
kinda like hate crime laws....we don't need them. Just ensure punishment for the crimes. Murder is murder, regardless of motive, thus lock'em up for murder...
A rant... (mainly cause it seems like they keep re-publishing this identical article every 3 months, and it gets annoying)
"If you put a 20-year-old driver behind the wheel with a cell phone, his reaction times are the same as a 70-year-old driver," said David Strayer, a University of Utah psychology professor and principal author of the study. "It's like instant aging."
In fact, motorists who talk on cell phones are more impaired than drunk drivers with blood-alcohol levels exceeding.08, Strayer and colleague Frank Drews, an assistant professor of psychology, found during research conducted in 2003.
What this really says article says...
Is that Elderly are a helluva a lot more dangerous than drunk drivers and should really be taken off the road.
Secondly, there is much question as to the validity of the tests.
"The study found that drivers who talked on cell phones were 18 percent slower in braking and took 17 percent longer to regain the speed they lost when they braked."
The first part is in deed a concern. The second is not. The 17% increase length to regain speed is most likely due to a cell phone user being extra cautious after such an ordeal and double-checking before they regain speed. This is NOT a bad thing.
Anyways, how much time are we talking here?
"The numbers....come down to milliseconds"
"The new research questions the effectiveness of cell phone usage laws in states such as New York and New Jersey, which only ban the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. It's not so much the handling of a phone, Strayer said, but the fact that having a conversation is a mental process that can drain concentration."
First off, we have to start admitting that not everyone can multi-task. We also need to see the statistics on an individual level. If 1/3 showed minimal impairment, and 1/3 showed no impairment, and 1/3 showed dramatic impairment. What is the breakdown?
I know plenty of drivers who are often 'distracted drivers'. Particularly when they have people in the car. How do these statistics compare to the same driver with a passenger? with four passengers? And I am sorry....a cell phone user is NOT more impaired than a drunk driver. It is political BS. I refuse to buy it and no statistic will prove it to me. Simply put...I see tons of people driving on the cell phones - and driving fine. Sometimes a momentary reaction issue...yes. But when I see a drunk driver they are all over 2 or three lanes. They nearly hit everyone. They often run off the road. Somehow it is hard for me to accept that I can see a 100+ cell phone users who are supposedly "more impaired" and they don't perform as poorly as drunk drivers.
So let's look at the truth instead of the non-stop media propaganda bullcrap.

According to the American Automobile Association, wireless phones were not among the top five contributing factors in auto accidents. From the more than 32,000 accidents analyzed, wireless phones contributed to 1.5 percent of accidents, according to the AAA research published in May.
The most distracting was an outside object, person or event, which contributed to 29.4 percent of accidents analyzed. AAA also determined that cassette or CD players were more distracting than cell phones, resulting in 11.4 percent of accidents analyzed.
Distractions from another occupant in the vehicle, such as a chatty passenger or baby, contributed to 10.9 percent of accidents. Eating or drinking contributed to 1.7 percent, according to the AAA study.
-
Well, 1.5% compared 11.4% for CD players. Sure seems like car CD players should be banned before cell phones does it not. Let's ban whiny babies from cars as well.
In truth, I spend much of my time driving on the cell phone. And drive much better than most of my local area residents. Furthermore, it has helped me remain awake and vibrant on long road trips.
Panasonic released a similar device with their d-snap AV-50S
However, the video is not truly MPEG4 as they encapsulate the file in a proprietary.ASF file format preventing you from being able to easily share the movies.
Secondly, the voice recorder files cannot be played back on your PC (only on the camcorder device which is limited to about 1 hour battery). Nor do they give you a tool to convert them from their proprietary format to a standard.wav or.mp3

I really don't think the proliferation of Trek is as much of a problem as Rick Berman (cancel Berman instead). His disregard for the past (canon) and for the fans is part of the problem.
Two good series that would re-vitalize Trek...
Star Trek: Empires (follows a Romulan Warbird and a Klingon cruiser. Episodes are a bit grittier, imagine the Klingon crew where negotiations have failed...final scene "planetary bombardment")
Star Trek: Academy
This would actually be a more teen focused show. Not quite as adult. Would be for 4 yrs only. The crew would actually "age" from Freshmen "plebe" cadet to a 1/Class cadet and finally a feature film for their graduation.

Perhaps...it's the fact that we still do not know the answers to two questions:
1) Where us and the universe come from?
2) Where are we going?
Until science answers those questions, there will ALWAYS be religion in Science Fiction.
Compare...selling me low-quality cheesy ringer towns of songs I already own at twice the cost of the actual CD cost.
Then don't give me a license. And tell me that I'm SOL when my phone dies.
Then explain to me why i should give a crap about copyrights and theivery?
However,
Babylon 5 did it right. A single two-part episode but was set-up for it years in advanced. That is not an "unfortunately" but a grand kudos.
