One of the projects I was thinking of building was a lightweight replacement for Konfabulator that would make the widgets dynamically appear and disappear based on a function key. Well hey, Apple have saved me the trouble.
It already does this...
F8 = Konspose, reveals all the widgets and hides the other stuff... juts keep the widgets in "desktop" mode and they're out of the way
The only thing that causes bluescreens on my XP machine occasionally (on start up, not randomly) is the frigging 16 bit TICALC dll file, because TI refuses to put out updated software that works with the ti86
Even if the answer is yes, and you have to supply the computer, that does not give you you the right to put whatever software you want on it.
It most certainly does. It is MY computer. As long as my software isn't hindering the usage of resources (networks, networked printers, shared drives, etc) by other students or causing any other kind of damage, I'm going to put what I damn well want on MY computer that I paid for, and you can piss off if you try to tell me otherwise
Second, does your employer allow your home computer to attach to their network?
No, however most people do not live in a residence hall on their employer's property for 4 years
it's my machine, not the schools if the school was buying me the machine, i'd say fine
the school should not be playing mommy and daddy to the machines... if they see someone spreading worms then they should disconnect them and send a polite note saying why and how to fix it
special software may be good for the kl00 phucked lusers, but to the people who know what they're doing it will be an annoyacnce
besides, are they going to send people around to check? what's to stop me from uninstalling the software when the pimple-faced "support tech" leaves the room?
I'd like to remind you that those can be spoofed easily. Someone in room A gets the mac address of someone in room B or room C and suddenly they're wireless again.
1) Set up a simple user/pass combination using osmething like NoCatAuth and tie it to their university name/password, set times they can't access based on when they're in that room.
but I don't like the idea of running Windows code on my Linux box
How does plugging the drive in mean reading Windows code? If you're refering to the ntfs.sys file used by Captive, then just don't use captive and live with not writing NTFS.
In fact, I don't want my data stored on a proprietary, closed filesystem
In fact, what the hell does it matter? Seriously. Nobody wants to steal your DV files unless you work for Pixar, so you don't need to uber encrypt them 300 times over using PGP, GPG, PPG, GGP, GNUPG, PGGNU, and GPGNU. Accessibility is hardly an issue - you can find an XP or 2000 install CD almost anywhere online, or even bring it to a friends house and hook it in to his box. Not to mention you stated Linux and OS X can read NTFS. You're never going to have a problem w/ getting at your data stored on an NTFS partition.
I hate people who complain about things just because they're proprietary. Nobody is forcing you to use NTFS either, Win XP supports FAT 32 file systems and so do Linux and Mac.

I still don't get the uproar about Leo. What's everyone see in him? The things he says are wrong just about as often as they are correct, he can't interview for shit, and nothing he says/writes is from his own knowledge/experience: it's all scammed/borrowed from other sources.
What isn't borrowed from other sources, anymore?
Anyway, the reason most people like Leo is he can be talking about *nix one second, and the next be talking about burning a CD from some MP3s you downloaded in simple terms that Grandma can understand w/o being talked down to.
shows like Call for help sucked... it was a last ditch to try and keep it from completely dying by putting leo in it's lead position instead of that horribly annoying ADHD guy who had too much coffee..
If you knew anything about the network, you would know that Leo hosted CFH from the beginning of ZDTV, until Chris Pirillo took over after Paul Allen/VV bought it. Leo was only reinstituted to CFH a few months ago due to major fan outcry.
The absolute minimum requirements of a computer user should be capabilities to build a system from scratch, install an operating system, and do at least some fundamental systems programming
And the absolute minimum to drive a car should be the ability to build a car from scratch and do some fundamental tweaking to the engine.
ORRRR you could just take a class on the rules of the road and have penalties for breaking them... oh, wait....
I guess you would consider it a 64 bit CAPABLE OS
You seriously think apple would just leave the G4 tower, iBook, and PowerBook users in the cold like that?

the general consensus from this thread seems to be
hp consumer != good
hp corporate = good

some dorms have digital telephone systems now to provide things like voicemail, so the university network is the only option left

I've still got my ZDTV foam squishy cube

Well when the hell is AOL going to switch to Mozilla? They fucking bought netscape for gods sake.
When they stop wanting their icon in the Online Services folder of every windows install, that's when

But traffic consistantly moves quicker in the left lane than the middle or right on most major roadways (at least here on the east coast)
For the 6 trillionth time, freecache only works w/ files over 5 megs
am i blind or did they forget the giant magnifying glass and escalator to nowhere?
which doesn't work in Firefox
imagine a beowulf cluster of these running linux
Wonder when it all says *poof* if you try this...
When you try to install the Virtual PC inside virtual PC and get an error that reads something like
"No, you cannot install Virtual PC inside another Virtual PC. You just had to try, though, didn't you?"
